Why do golfers sometimes place a token or coin behind the ball? I know almost nothing about golf, but I've started watching it on a new HDTV as I find it beautiful to watch in Hi Def. I just watched a player putt to within 5-6 feet. He put a token on the green right behind the ball, picked up the ball for a second, then replaced the ball where it was, removed the token and made the putt. What is the reason for this?

How profitable is a golf course? I love playing golf and would love to own a golf course. However, with the price of real estate the way it is, I wonder if it is even really profitable? Is it more profitable to buy couple hundred acres and put a course on it or put some homes down? I would think that it would be more profitable to put homes down, because the course would take several years to get out of the red.

What proactive maintence is worth doing on a car with 120,000 miles on it? I have 2000 VW Golf automatic trans with 120,000 miles on it. Id like the keep the car until it basicly drops say 200,000 miles. Besides the usual oil changes, brake jobs, tires. etc.. whats worth doing to the car to keep it runnings indefinitely. For instance is it worth $900 to change the shocks and struts. Are the various "flushes" worth the cost. Etc etc...

The About.com page says that golf cart rentals on Catalina Island go for about $30 plus an hour. Is this right? So a couple hour tour of the botanical gardens and Avalon would cost me over $100? For some reason this seems a little high to me. I remember when I was a kid it was about $25 for the afternoon, but that was years ago. Anyone been to Avalon recently who can remember the rate?

Golf. Just got some clubs and looking for advice on how to start work on my game. My normal drive starts off as a hook but ends up slicing waaaay to the left (as you can see, I'm left handed) but grrrreat distance. Advice on drive? Putting and short iron shots I have gotten a real feel for but the long shots elude me. Short on taking lessons (I abhor authority when it is physically present) how to improive my game?
