I need to start participating in 2 annual golf events at work (believe these are best ball style). Save mini-putt, I have no golf experience. I need advice on a) equipment and b) developing enough skill to not totally embarrass myself. I have 2-3 months to prepare for the first event. Location: Toronto. [more inside]

I used to play a lot of disc golf 10-15 years ago, but haven't played much at all in the past decade. I recently took it up again, and quite frankly, I stink. I'd like to at least be able to be within a couple strokes of par. Am i better off just playing as many rounds as possible, or should I devote some of my time to just practicing my driving, putting, etc? What else can i do to make myself better at disc golf?

Battery died in a Volkswagen Golf. New battery connected and now whenever the car door is opened the alarm goes off, which came as a shock because we didn't know the car had an alarm! Disconnecting a thin blue wire on the negative battery terminal disables the alarm but the car won't start -- dash lights come on, radio plays fine, but the engine doesn't even make a sound. Just dead. Presumably an immobiliser. Help! [more inside]

Gift Filter: Under $40 shipped, small token of appreciation for my mentor. I'd like it to be a small decoration (or the like) that he could put on his desk. Other requirements: somehow related to both golf (his favorite hobby) and the oilfield (his career for 35+ years). I'm not very crafty, so hand making something isn't an option.

I live pretty close by to the Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena, CA. Can you recommend a golf pro to seek out? Also, what questions should I be asking to see if I'm a good match with the instructor?
I'm a beginner. Never been out on the fairway. But I've hit a few balls on my own.

My 2001 VW Golf (1.6l manual) was caught in flash flooding on Friday. The car stalled in water that came up to a couple of inches past the level of the bottom of the doors. The car was in the water for about 15 minutes before some local residents helped me push the car out of the water. Luckily, the car started and I drove home. The next day I found it was (intermittently) difficult to change gears. Is it possible that water could have got into the transmission or some other part of the car effecting the transmission? Or is this just a coincidence and the well know problem with the Mk4 transmission has happened? Any advice is appreciated.

Can any golfers out there recommend a decent golf bag for under £100 (if such a thing exists)? Failing that, what do golfers look for in a golf bag? Are there any particular brands that'll earn you a bit of kudos? It's a gift, but I haven't the first clue.

I'm looking for the source of this remembered anecdote I heard about 30 years ago: A famous letter was to the editor of the Times of London read, in its entirety: "This morning while shaving, I broke 100. What's par?" This apparently released a flood of responses. The letter was published much longer ago, I'd guess, and it might not have been the Times, either — perhaps it was in the journal Notes & Queries
. Search at Times or Notes & Queries fails to find it, however. It was in Britain, in any case. [more inside]

Why do golfers sometimes place a token or coin behind the ball?
I know almost nothing about golf, but I've started watching it on a new HDTV as I find it beautiful to watch in Hi Def.
I just watched a player putt to within 5-6 feet. He put a token on the green right behind the ball, picked up the ball for a second, then replaced the ball where it was, removed the token and made the putt. What is the reason for this?

How profitable is a golf course? I love playing golf and would love to own a golf course. However, with the price of real estate the way it is, I wonder if it is even really profitable? Is it more profitable to buy couple hundred acres and put a course on it or put some homes down? I would think that it would be more profitable to put homes down, because the course would take several years to get out of the red.
