Home for Christmas and my mom has a jewelry question. She tried cleaning the chain of her gold necklace using silver polish, and when she did, it turned silver. Why? And can it be reversed?

Do you know of any other firms that will recycle your gold and make jewelry for you? I know of
EcoKarat, but they don't offer the stones I want for my custom jewelry.
Barring that, what's the best way to sell the unwanted gold jewelry I have? All of those cash4gold websites look unsavory.

Why do jewelers always insist of giving prices read from a calculator screen and not from the price tag of the piece I'm looking at?
Do they give different people different prices? Or is it a way of accounting for fluctuating prices of gold or gems from week to week?

Just gave the fiancee her engagement ring. Problem is she has strange reaction. She gets a weird rash/chemical burn looking ring where the ring sits.
The ring is 18karat white gold. Could it be an allergy to the gold? Could it be jewelry polish? What is a new (ignorant) fiancee to do to show her I can solve any problem?

I want to make jewelry! Like, real jewelry. Read: metalsmithing, not putting manufactured beads on wires. What tools should I buy? What books would you recommend? Do I need to take a class or not?

ok, so I while back you guys advice and buying a wedding ring. So I got this awesome cool handcarved wedding ring from an antique store. It is 18K gold band with a handcarved design of laurel and berries....but I only got one. So how do I go about getting a duplicate made (larger) that would fit me? I have talked to jewelers and the are very vague. I live in SE MI area.
