Future Mr. Fallbala and I are getting married in September. We started looking at wedding rings and are wondering about materials, design and durability. [more inside]
I'd like to buy an ancient, byzantine or early middle ages gold coin as a gift for someone who likes ancient civilization and the idea of having a gold coin. Neither of us know anything about buying gold or coins or ancient things. I'd like advice on how to make this purchase without being taken for a ride. [more inside]
A recent episode of Gastropod convinced me that I should get some gold-plated cutlery as a present for a friend (it supposedly makes certain foods taste nicer). I haven't had any luck finding cutlery in the UK from the usual trustworthy department stores, so now I'm willing to widen the search to other UK stores and also online stores in the US.
I bought a couple necklaces at an estate sale. They are vermeil (gold plating over sterling silver) and as such bear 925 Italy marks on the clasps, and also have a cursive V that in a stretch could perhaps be read as a 6V or a GV but really just looks to me like a cursive V. I figure it's either the maker (and if so, does anyone know what company?) or it's a code I don't yet know for the amount/quality of gold used or perhaps it literally stands for vermeil. Google unhelpfully keeps offering initial necklaces of the letter V.
I was doing some reading about plutonium and realized that I have a desire to own a thing that's surprisingly heavy when picked up. Deceivingly so. Heavy enough to make people exclaim at the weight of my small object. Bonus points if it's not (too) poisonous or (very) radioactive. I know Au and Pb are pretty heavy, but can I beat that? What's the very densest thing I can (legally) afford to acquire in sufficient volume to keep on my desk and fidget with?
My recently-deceased father owned a dental laboratory for years, and we found a small quantity of platinum foil, gold dental scrap, and unused silver-containing dental alloy in his shop. I am having a hard time finding reviews of refiners / scrappers. [more inside]

What is the name of the book and movie about a simple-minded, poor man who lived with his mother, carried a pet bird with him and gets innocently involved in an social uprising? I think he discovered gold near the beginning and his clothes are tattered.
I'm interested in finding online sources of precious-metal jewelry at a low cost. For example, a site that had solid gold/gold plated/solid silver chains to put other jewelry on. I know ebay has a good selection, but I have found that things have been mislabeled (ie something marked solid gold that is obviously not). I also know there are some things like that on Etsy, but there has to be a source of their supplies. I'm more interested in the low cost side than the artful jewelry side (I already have lots of sites like that to drool at!).
A friend mentioned something to me about the U.S. "losing Germany's gold," and I hadn't heard anything about this story. I did some research online and read about Germany's gold holdings in the Federal Reserve Bank, and how the Fed has refused to allow Germany to audit its holdings in the Fed vaults in New York City. My elderly father has spent all of his savings in recent months – around $200,000 – buying expensive coins. Most are gold, some are silver and platinum. Some are bullion; most are old and "rare." His collection was fun and interesting for a while, but now it has become a source of stress to him. He has no money left in the bank, and has decided he doesn’t want to keep the coins. It looks like Dad was skillfully played by slick sales reps, but I haven’t seen evidence yet that he has been defrauded. He has asked me to sell the coins for him. What’s the best way to sell a bunch of expensive coins? [more inside]
Let's say someone (anyone) made a fortune in the early 18th century - would it be possible to track their fortune over time to see where it is in the present day? I can imagine this being relatively simple if the money just stayed in the family, but what if you wanted to track the fortunes made during something like the Gold Rush?

I can find lots of plaecs that tell me the price if I can want to buy them, but nowhere to find out what they are worth to sell. Can someone recommend a reputable dealer in the Toronto area where I can take tham?

I'm getting married in San Diego in the middle of February. I will have a short span of time to acquire a wedding band in a city I know nothing about. Do you have an suggestions where I might find a non-jeweled, yellow-gold, vintage, possibly deco-period, wedding band?
I would like to buy two gold chains, one 20" to wear with a gold locket, and one 10" to wear with a gold swan charm as an ankle bracelet. I could also buy one 30" chain and have it cut in two. I'd like real 14k gold, not plate. I've been looking online, and some of the gold jewelry dealers strike me as sketchy. Has anyone bought gold jewelry successfully online for a reasonable price, and where did you do so?

This ring turned up at my deceased grandmother's house and no one recognized it. General consensus was that it looked like a man's ring from the 1970s. The band/base appears to be gold and the design appears to be rose gold. Can anyone recognize the design or shed any light on this? Pics: 1 2 3
Capital Gains on Precious Metals exchanged for Goods and Services? I own Platinum, Gold, and Silver physical coins, bars, etc. and know my cost basis for all purchases and have not sold any.
