How do I buy this parked domain?

I'd like to buy the domain name "myfirstnamemylastname.com" (but with my actual first and last names). Unfortunately it's parked with GoDaddy, full of ads, and shows up as already taken when I do a domain name search. Do I have to buy it from GoDaddy or the owner or what? Or should I not bother, and go for the .net instead? This is the first time I've wanted a domain name that wasn't actually being used for a real website before.

Contemplating getting my own server

How would the new Mac Mini server compare to a cheap shared hosting account? At present, my website is hosted on GoDaddy.com's 'economy' shared Linux hosting plan. I noticed that Apple has now released a version of the Mac Mini designed to act as a server, costing about $1,000 Canadian.

Does anyone have any idea of how it would compare with GoDaddy, in terms of performance? I have found myself frustrated by how slowly content loads from their servers, especially anything that depends on MySQL databases, such as WordPress and MediaWiki.

$1,000 would be akin to about 10 years of shared hosting payments, but there might be secondary benefits to running my own server, rather than farming the task out to someone else. Any thoughts?

How to set up an e-mail through a new website?

How to set up an e-mail through a new website? My boss just had me purchase a domain name from godaddy. We opted not to have our email set up through godaddy, though. Now, my boss has these lovely new business cards with a non-existent email address on them. My question is... how can I set up an email that is basically name@webstite.com when the website isn't up and running yet? (She isn't concerned with the site right now- she just wants people to be able to send her emails.) Is there a way to do this?

Please help me choose the best domain name to use for my new bartering classified site.

Please help me choose the best domain name to use for my new bartering classified site. I wanted barterlist.com, but in every case below, the people want way to much money for the domain name related to it. The max I would spend is $500:

barterlist.com is going for 20k

barter-list.com is going for $2500

barterlist.net is going for 10k

thebarterlist.com - I couldnt seem to find the registrants info from a whois lookup, but it said it was registered back in fall 2008 through godaddy. So I used Godaddy's domain buying agent for $60 2 weeks ago and put an offer for up to $400 for it. The status for 2 weeks in my control panel is 'contacting registrant'. Godaddy stops contacting and doesnt pay a refund after 30 days...

I have purchased the following through godaddy:

thebarterlist.net*
barterlists.com*
bartorlist.com
barterlist.ws
barterlist.us
barter-list.net
barter-list.org
barteringlist.org
barteringlist.net
barteringlist.us
barterlistings.org*
barterpostings.com*

-what are your thoughts with trying to contact the owner of thebarterlist.com...do you think its a lost cause? did I waste $60 with godaddy?

-is adding an s to the end of barterlist completely suck? has there ever been a successful company that uses a plural? it actually makes sense with my site as there are multiple lists

-is .net .org etc a huge no-no when trying to startup?

-is a - in the middle a no-no as well?

-what out of my list above appeals to you most..i marked what i thought was the best with an *?

What's Wrong With (Go)Daddy?

In August, I registered a domain name for a friend with Godaddy.com. Then, for technical reasons, the friend decided that she wanted to move from Godaddy, so we figured we should delete the account and then rebuy it through another domain registrar. Simple, right? No. This was in early December. The domain name has indeed been deleted from my friend's Godaddy account, but the name is not up for sale - Godaddy is apparently the owner of it until August 2010. So in effect, my friend has paid money to Godaddy so that Godaddy can own a domain. How can I get my domain name back? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Please Help me with my Blogger Blog and Custom Domain

Why might my Blogger blog not be working with my custom domain and how do I fix it? Four days ago, I set up a blog at CUSTOMDOMAIN.blogspot.com and I own the url CUSTOMDOMAIN.com from GoDaddy. I followed the instructions here from Blogger so that people who visit the Custom Domain would see me Blogger blog. When I visit CUSTOMDOMAIN.com it just shows the godaddy.com parking page without the content from my blogspot blog.

In order to set up the domain I own with the blog I created a CNAME record for the domain (screenshot here, does this look right?) and changed the setting in my blogger setting panel to indicate that it is a custom url that I am using. I'm reasonably certain that I did everything in the blogger side ok, because when I visit CUSTOMDOMAIN.blogspot.com it redirects to CUSTOMDOMAIN.com, but with just the empty godaddy parking page.

Is there something I did wrong or something that I can fix so that my godaddy.com domain works with my blog?

Also, is it possible to set up a Google Apps account and then transfer this domain that I have purchased to that account so that blogger is handling both the domain and the blog? I see where I can purchase a new domain with Google Apps, but can I transfer one that I already own?

Also, I emailed godaddy tech support, and they sent a reply saying that it didn't look like a problem on there end.

What's up with my website?

Why does my web page work with a www prefix and not so much without? I have a domain and hosting account with GoDaddy. My "site" currently consists of only one page with my Google calendar displayed. If I direct a browser to www.myaddress.info, it works fine; if I go to myaddress.info, sometimes it works, but sometimes I get a partial - just the frame from around the calendar and my name. It doesn't seem to be consistent, browser-specific, or have to do with changes to my GCal.

Any thoughts? Anything I can do, or is it a fluke on the hosting side - slow/bad DNS propagation or some such? Should I fiddle with DNS redirection via my GoDaddy account to simply redirect the sometimes-working address to the always-working one?

Domain Not Resolving through my ISP

My domain is resolving for others to see, but not me ! HELP! One of my domains, CLIKT.com, is registered at GoDaddy and now hosted at Hostgator.

When I enter the domain's URL in a browser (Firefox or IE - doesn't matter) I see an old screen with the cash parking page from GoDaddy even though the nameservers have been updated. When I ask others to look at the site, they report no problems and the site renders as it should. (Right now I've left the site empty so all that should be displayed is the directory listing.) I've waited days and not seen the actual site as I should. I've tried clearing my browser cache as well as running CCleaner to remove any trace of the incorrect pages.

I've also had the same issue when I had the domain hosted at another provider. (The site looks like the cash parking page on my end, but looks fine to others or if i view the site through Proxify.)

And the strange thing is, I have about 25 domains registered with GoDaddy and hosted at various spots, but this is the only one that is affected.

My ISP is AT&T (I have a DSL account that I use and through which I am seeing the old site). I am not sure if the problem is with them or GoDaddy (since I have other domains registered there that are hosted at HostGator and other places without issue). A tech at GoDaddy reported that he could see the site so the problem was probably with the ISP (AT&T) but I'm not sure about that and why other domains wouldn't be affected....

So is the problem with the ISP or with the registrar ?

I'm half-tempted to transfer the domain to another registrar to see if that solves the problem, but that doesn't tell me what the cause is, only the source....

ATT version: http://www.joejurczyk.com/CLIKT-ATT.jpg
Proxify version: http://www.joejurczyk.com/CLIKT-Proxify.jpg
Sorry for babbling on....thanks for listening

Cheapest way to register an expired Godaddy domain? I've had my eye on a .com domain for a while but it was registered via godaddy with domains-by-proxy contact details.

Idly checking it again today, I find that whois now reports that the domain expired on January 15th. When I go through the Godaddy shopping cart, it's letting me "buy" the domain (their "Domain Buy Service Package") for $59.99 ($49.99 with a $10 promo code) but that would wipe out my long hoarded paypal funds so I'm wondering if I should wait until it comes out of its "grace period" and just pay the normal $6.99 fee? Is there a way to determine when it will be on the open market?

How do I configure DNS on a Linux server? I've got a virtual dedicated Linux server through Godaddy. I'm trying to set it up so that the domain name resolves to the proper location. I jumped through all the hoops in their guide, but am still getting a "server not found" error when I try to hit the domain in my browser. It's been over four days now since I set it up, and it's no longer resolving to a Godaddy parked domain page, so I know it's not a propagation issue. I submitted a help ticket to Godaddy, and their response was that I don't have "a proper zone file setup for mydomainnamehere.com." How do I do this? Their email was remarkably light on details of how to do this.

Why hasn't my domain auto-renewed?

One of my .co.uk domain names does not appear to have auto-renewed with GoDaddy. The UK body for domain names, nominet, are mailing me by email and regular post to warn me about this and since this week, have sent a pro forma invoice (£94) so that I can directly renew my domain and save having it suspended... The thing is, GoDaddy, when questioned, want me to believe this is normal for .co.uk domains!

On their system, my domain is showing as registered until 2009, as if the registration had gone through, or as if they have paid Nominet. GoDaddy say

"If you have renewed the domain, the renewal will not show up at the registry until the end of the month. The Nominet UK registry does have some delay. We appreciate your patience in this matter."

But time is running out! I can't afford to wait until the end of the month, when the domain expired on the 1st!

Nominet say:
"If we do not receive payment, either from you or your registrar within 30 days of the expiry date, we will suspend the domain name and then cancel it."

Surely this cannot be an efficient way to run a domain name registrations body? To have to email and write people all the time warning them and cajoling them to register when they already have?

And when I wrote to GoDaddy again:

"Thank you for contacting online support. I apologize for the confusion. Domain names ending in country codes do not reflect as being renewed with the registry until the end of the month they expire, as previously stated. Please let us know if we can help you in any other way. "

Does anyone have any experience of this kind of mess?

Thanks so much!

Why has my hosting become so slow?

GoDaddy hosting has become intolerably slow: is it certainly their fault? If so, can I do anything about it? If it isn't their fault, what am I doing wrong? I am running a number of MySQL and PHP based websites using hosting from GoDaddy.com. Specifically, I am running three WordPress blogs and a MediaWiki based wiki. During the last few weeks, they have all become markedly slower than previously. Is this certainly the result of server-side congestion, or is there something I could do to speed things up?

To give an example, it now takes twenty seconds or more between clicking the 'Write' button on the main WordPress screen and actually having the page for writing entries come up. Naturally, this makes all of these sites frustrating to maintain.

None of the sites gets a huge amount of traffic (in total, they get under 200 visits a day). If the slowdown is GoDaddy's fault, is there anything I can do about it, short of switching to a new hosting provider? I am using their Economy level Linux shared hosting account.

I host my domain with godaddy.com, and am suddenly not able to get email from my office. Their IP has been blocked by godaddy because of a "bogus helo." Godaddy insists that what causes this is a virus or worm on my office's mailserver. They've run all kinds of scans but have not detected anything wrong. Godaddy still refuses to unblock, since I'm on a shared server. Email from the work server still gets through to other hosts (yahoo.com, gmail.com, etc.). Any suggestions for a work around or another way to find the problem on the work mailserver?
Globat vs. GoDaddy

I'm trying to decide between extending my current Globat hosting and signing up for a particularly alluring GoDaddy plan. Given the gulf between the prices for their respective entry-level products, I'm thinking that there has to be a catch somewhere. Plan comparison follows:

Globat

GoDaddy

Storage Space

25 GB

5 GB

(Have yet to use more than 100 MB thus far)

Bandwidth / Month

300 GB

250 GB

(Have yet to use more than 2 GB / Month thus far)

E-Mail Addresses

Unlimited

500

(I use only three at any given time.)

Scripting/DB

PHP/MySQL

PHP/MySQL

(I use both extensively.)

Cost / Month (3 yr. Commitment)

$5.95

$2.79

Is there something about GoDaddy that outweighs the substantial savings I'd receive by switching?

running scripts on godaddy acount...

Trying to run python and cgi scripts on a non-dedicated godaddy account. (ie, I dont have shell access). But my ftp program can transmit 'raw' commands to the server. I uploaded a cgi script called "pythontest.cgi" (all this in the context of trying to install moinmoin on my godaddy account). I got the pythontest.cgi script from the moinmoin instructions on installing it.
I do have python, supposedly, on my account (its in usr/bin/python). I'm supposed to be able to run CGI scripts from the cgi folder (which is where it is now). I uploaded it in ASCII (as opposed to binary) as they told me to. Godaddy support hasnt been very useful beyond this point.
My question is: how in the world do I execute "pythontest.cgi"? I tried putting it in the address bar as a url (with full path) in mozilla. Got an internal server error.
Any ideas? Has anyone run scripts off a godaddy account? Has anyone installed a wiki on a non-dedicated godaddy account?
Thanks...

Alternatives to GoDaddy

I have a website that is hosted by DreamHost but the domain registration is at GoDaddy. I want to transfer the registration somewhere else because of GoDaddy's politics. One thing I'm looking for is private registration so that my info is not available to spammers on Whois -- GoDaddy and a few other companies do that. Anyone have any suggestions for good registration companies? Namecheap? 1&1? RegisterFly? Thanks.

Help me get my domain back!

In March of this year I registered a domain name using GoDaddy (went with the cheapest option). When the whole "Godaddy condones torture" scandal thing hit I immediately decided I didn't want to give them my business and procedded to cancel my domain, which apparently is not what I wanted to do. Help me get my domain back! Ok, so the process was complicated but apparently I was not familiar enough to know the difference between transfering a domain and cancelling a domain and I chose to cancel my account. Now my domain is parked with lovely advertising for GoDaddy's service (the irony....) and I can find no option of getting my domain back unless I wait until march of next year (or later). What are my options?

Who's the best domain registrar that isn't godaddy?

What's the best domain registrar in terms of service and price not including godaddy.com? I don't want to support godaddy's pro-torture CEO.

With Dreamhost now supporting Ruby on Rails, I'm considering moving my account there. I think they have free domain registration, so that woud be pretty cool.

Forwarding an e-mail address across domains?

I recently registered a domain name through GoDaddy.com and now I want to forward e-mail to an address on my domain to another e-mail address on another domain. GoDaddy's help files don't explain how to do this. Help! So I have mydomainname.com and I want any e-mail sent to myname@mydomainname.com to get forwarded to myname@anotherdomainname.net. GoDaddy has a place for e-mail forwarding and I've entered both the e-mail address on mydomainname.com and the e-mail address for anotherdomainname.net, but for the past 3 days the status on this forward has said " --- pending setup: validating MX record ---". I currently have no MX records in my Total DNS Control settings through GoDaddy. Do I need to add one? Does it need to be the POP server from anotherdomainname.net, such as pop.anotherdomainname.net? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Website Builders

This is kind of an embarassing question. Is there any decent cheap or shareware software for building basic websites? I know how to edit HTML pretty well, and even tinker with CSS to get it to do what I want, but I don't know how page structure/architecture really works. I want to build a very basic website where I can have an inaccessible image/media folder (to serve to my Blogger-hosted blog, which I'll eventually migrate to a subdomain) and just a few pages of text. All I get from the controls where my domain name is hosted (GoDaddy) is an IP address and a login. After that it's up to me, evidently.

I'm going to be on CNN: how do I keep my bandwidth costs and usage controlled?

I just found out that CNN is going to cover something I did on my website! Despite the anxiety involved in appearing on television, I am concerned that the bandwith on my godaddy account won't be nearly enough to accomodate the massive hits I will probably get. What do I do? Just pay for more bandwith? How much? Please help!
