I'd like to buy the domain name "myfirstnamemylastname.com" (but with my actual first and last names). Unfortunately it's parked with GoDaddy, full of ads, and shows up as already taken when I do a domain name search. Do I have to buy it from GoDaddy or the owner or what? Or should I not bother, and go for the .net instead? This is the first time I've wanted a domain name that wasn't actually being used for a real website before.

In August, I registered a domain name for a friend with Godaddy.com. Then, for technical reasons, the friend decided that she wanted to move from Godaddy, so we figured we should delete the account and then rebuy it through another domain registrar. Simple, right? No. [more inside]

I've bought a domain with Godaddy. I would like the http://mydomain.net (with no 'www') to go to my site, except it doesn't, it goes to a parked page. How can I change it so it goes to the same place as typing http://www.mydomain.net? (I'm not an idiot, but for these purposes, I might need it spelled out).

One of my .co.uk domain names does not appear to have auto-renewed with GoDaddy. The UK body for domain names, nominet, are mailing me by email and regular post to warn me about this and since this week, have sent a pro forma invoice (£94) so that I can directly renew my domain and save having it suspended... So I just started signing up for a domain on GoDaddy, but then found out I could do it on my Nearly Free Speech account for less instead, but I can't register that domain on NFS right now because I'm partway through the registration at GoDaddy. What do I need to do to sign up for it via NFS?

I'm trying to decide between extending my current Globat hosting and signing up for a particularly alluring GoDaddy plan. Given the gulf between the prices for their respective entry-level products, I'm thinking that there has to be a catch somewhere. Plan comparison follows: [more inside]

Trying to run python and cgi scripts on a non-dedicated godaddy account. (ie, I dont have shell access). But my ftp program can transmit 'raw' commands to the server. I uploaded a cgi script called "pythontest.cgi" (all this in the context of trying to install moinmoin on my godaddy account). I got the pythontest.cgi script from the moinmoin instructions on installing it. I do have python, supposedly, on my account (its in usr/bin/python). I'm supposed to be able to run CGI scripts from the cgi folder (which is where it is now). I uploaded it in ASCII (as opposed to binary) as they told me to. Godaddy support hasnt been very useful beyond this point. My question is: how in the world do I execute "pythontest.cgi"? I tried putting it in the address bar as a url (with full path) in mozilla. Got an internal server error. Any ideas? Has anyone run scripts off a godaddy account? Has anyone installed a wiki on a non-dedicated godaddy account? Thanks...

I have a website that is hosted by DreamHost but the domain registration is at GoDaddy. I want to transfer the registration somewhere else because of GoDaddy's politics. One thing I'm looking for is private registration so that my info is not available to spammers on Whois -- GoDaddy and a few other companies do that. Anyone have any suggestions for good registration companies? Namecheap? 1&1? RegisterFly? Thanks.

In March of this year I registered a domain name using GoDaddy (went with the cheapest option). When the whole "Godaddy condones torture" scandal thing hit I immediately decided I didn't want to give them my business and procedded to cancel my domain, which apparently is not what I wanted to do. Help me get my domain back! [more inside]

This is kind of an embarassing question. Is there any decent cheap or shareware software for building basic websites? I know how to edit HTML pretty well, and even tinker with CSS to get it to do what I want, but I don't know how page structure/architecture really works. I want to build a very basic website where I can have an inaccessible image/media folder (to serve to my Blogger-hosted blog, which I'll eventually migrate to a subdomain) and just a few pages of text. All I get from the controls where my domain name is hosted (GoDaddy) is an IP address and a login. After that it's up to me, evidently.

I just found out that CNN is going to cover something I did on my website! Despite the anxiety involved in appearing on television, I am concerned that the bandwith on my godaddy account won't be nearly enough to accomodate the massive hits I will probably get. What do I do? Just pay for more bandwith? How much? Please help!
