I am trying to back up my Gmail account to my home computer, a MacBook Pro. I am able to sync the account and have downloaded most of my messages/attachments, but the native Mac mail program only downloads messages as far back as 2006. (My Gmail account goes back to 2004.) Disk space is not a problem. I have also made sure the setting for limiting the number of messages to download is not checked. Any other ideas? Thanks!
I have been invited to join a google group for work. I do not want to join with my personal email. I have received the invitation via my university address. I cannot seem to accept the invitation. [more inside]
I need a better calendaring option. Must be as simple as possible or I won't use it. Super long details inside. [more inside]
A federal agency uses gmail as their email service provider. I use this federal version of gmail as part of my job and need to be able to find and reproduce gchat/gtalk/hangouts exchanges I've had with colleagues. Why is this so hard? Why. [more inside]
I can sign onto gmail from Chrome or IE no problem, but Firefox tells me that gmail is an untrusted connection. What gives? [more inside]
I downloaded gmailnotifier from gmailnotifier.com and setting it up, it requested my password. Obviously it needs this information but how can I be sure that it won't abuse it? How do you know what software to trust? [more inside]
I'd like to be notified on my iPhone for email from one or two specific email addresses. I have gmail. I have it set up as my mail account on the phone. How can I be notified of only specific mail, not all incoming? [more inside]
Some time ago, I took the misguided step of setting up a filter in gmail to send all emails from Sierra Trading Post straight to trash. Then I'd still be able to access the discount codes if I wanted to buy something, but I wouldn't be tempted by/inundated with emails during non-shopping periods. I've since deleted the filter, but gmail still sends all emails from STP--including order confirmations--to trash. Even weirder, I cannot seem to undelete the messages. What is going on? Does Sergey Brin have some evil scheme to be the only person with cool outerwear? [more inside]
My brother just got a new Blackberry. (I know.) And a new phone number. He uses Verizon in New York. When he sends me a text, his messages come to my Gmail account as emails from [hisnumber]@vtext.com. Whyyyyyyyy? Please help make it stop. [more inside]
So, I have a standard Notes app on my iPhone and iPad. Lots of problems lately with reading/deleting mail on both, particularly with Yahoo!, so I deleted my Yahoo! and Gmail accounts and downloaded the particular apps for each instead. Then I made a note in the Notes app and to my dismay saw that most of my notes had disappeared. I googled this and learned that the Notes app may have assigned my notes to the email accounts I deleted (why?) but searching those online email accounts has only uncovered some, not all, my missing notes. iCloud doesn't have them either. Are they gone forever, hive mind? Can you think of something I've missed?
How do I find out the origin of an automatic reply that does not appear to originate from the actual email address I sent the message to? [more inside]
A colleague's company run gmail account is filtering to the spam folder for other people on the same company run gmail account. Is there a fix beyond "not spam"? [more inside]
For nearly a year, I've been plagued by my Google searches periodically defaulting to the Swedish Google page (and all of my Google activity turning into Swedish language). I have clicked on "sign out of all other web sessions" in gmail lots and lots of times. I have recently worked out that this happens because I signed into Google on my girlfriend's mother's account last summer. How can I make this stop without involving my girlfriend's mother? My new google account was suspended. I believe they think I'm a spammer. But I am working for a small non-profit. Our email contact list is legitimate. My initial request for account reinstatement was denied. Need help getting reinstated. Details below: [more inside]
I have a so-far unused 'public' Twitter account under my real name tied to my primary (real-name) gmail account. I have a 2nd Twitter account tied to a different gmail address that I would like to use for personal/ frivolous/off-brand uses. I would prefer that the twain shall never meet - e.g. my personal Twitter will not be suggested to contacts from professional Twitter as 'someone to follow'. Is this possible? [more inside]
I recently bought a new Alcatel One Touch 7 Tab, running Jelly Bean. It has a lot of problems, often it takes several seconds to respond, apps freeze, it has graphical issues with some games that aren't necessarily new, some apps don't even run, and it hangs when going from one app to another. Gmail is suddenly sending lots of important messages into my spam folder. I've followed the rudimentary steps I have found in their help area, but perhaps you can help me better? [more inside]
We use the free Google Apps at our non-profit for about 5 heavy users who have hit storage limits, 30 light and another 30+ who need to access our Google Drive and other domain-limited sites. Previously we switched heavy users to a new account with access to the previous account, plus forwards as a work-around. Google's helpdesk says upgrade only as we're non-US. Does anyone have a better solution? We use Google spreadsheets and several marketplace apps, and otherwise are super-happy with Google but $4000/annually is a big upgrade bill!
I am looking for another free/cheap web mail app that I can use to contact the ten people I normally correspond with. Any recommendations? [more inside]
I have a Gmail account, and I use Mail. I am signed up to a listserv. I get most of the emails sent to this listserv in my inbox, but some of them get spam-filtered and sent straight to junk. [more inside]

My company recently decided to move everyone from Outlook to Google Apps. Now a lot of people who are used to Outlook (and MS Office) in all things are being hit with a new environment. It's going okay, but I've volunteered to give a short presentation on how to make the most of the new tools, since I have a lot of experience using them for my personal stuff. Can folks suggest good online resources either for me to mine for tips, or to hand out to users for their own reference later? [more inside]
I have moved from Argentina back to the UK. Whilst there I set up my Google account with 2-Step Verification using my Argentinian phone number. Now back in the UK I no longer have access to that phone and as I unpacked I realised I threw away the notebook in which I jotted down the emergency codes in the move. Am I screwed? [more inside]
A few days ago I was searching for an email in my Gmail inbox and entered the email address of the person I knew it was from -- let's say email@example.com. I don't know what I did wrong during this very mundane occurrence, but ever since then "firstname.lastname@example.org" has been aggressively filling itself in on google-related search boxes in Chrome, preventing me from using Google effectively. How can I make it stop? [more inside]

I would like my friends & family who are not G+ members (and do not want to be) to be able to view my Picasaweb albums as in the past. I have searched several forums like google's downgrade, but find no definitive answers. If I delete my Google+ profile can I email the link to my friends/family? I do not want to lose my Gmail account.
Why don't gmail or other webmail providers have a simple "block sender" button, which not only archives/deletes a message but automatically does this for any future messages from that sender, so that you don't even see them? [more inside]
Why do some of my emails in my Gmail account no longer exist? [more inside]

A few months ago, I started getting emails thanking me for signing up for things like Match.com, Monster, and a few newsletters, all of these were using a personal address that I haven't used in about 7 years. I figured it was a weird spam thing, since the user names they created for these accounts were just random letters (like djfdksjafkasjvnckdfja). Today, I got four different responses from auto insurance companies about quote requests that I didn't actually make, all using that old address as well. I think I need to delete my Google account to stop this, but I'm very very hesitant to lose access to all my paid apps. Any suggestions what I could do?
A few days ago I had 24,000 messages in my inbox; today I have 55. What happened to them? [more inside]
My account was compromised earlier this morning to send a spam message. My contacts were missing, along with all my sent mail since January of 2009. I changed my password and rolled back my contacts, but couldn't recover my sent mail on my own, so I emailed support. Their response was swift and worthless. [more inside]
Most "distracting" sites I can block by an entry in my etc/hosts file (Mac OSX 10.8.2). e.g.: 127.0.0.1 plus.google.com But this method doesn't seem to be able to block gmail. [more inside]
Earlier today I got a message from an address and name I didn't recognize with no text and "Hiii@" as the subject. 'This is clearly spam' I thought, and marked it as such. About 15 minutes later I get a gchat invitation from the same person. I shrugged, and decided to answer it. The conversation seemed real enough, and there was no enticement to do anything like click on a link or buy some scammy product. I'm racking my brain and still can't place the name. Is this a spam bot, or a real person? [more inside]
Using Gmail, I opened a strange message and now I'm worried it may have done something to my computer. Does this make sense? [more inside]
It's an old cry now - to get out of Google's claws. Mail, calendar and everything. However, I always find one thing missing. Chat is never talked about. As a matter of fact this one is the difficult most. You need to have added all those chat contacts and they in turn have had to added you(approved) you back, unlike email where you just need to fine an email and the receiver gets it unless you were specifically blocked. So, let's discuss how to release our chatting app/service free from the claws of Google/Facebook/Skype &c and still be able to: [more inside]
This has happened twice now, and it is freaky. Google chrome on the iMac I use in my office at work (at a university) will have usernames and passwords for people who have never been in my office ever. The first time it happened it was my father's email, and the second time it was my stepmother's. Why would chrome be filling in these odd emails when it doesn't even save my own login information after closing the browser window? [more inside]
I have a video chat interview tomorrow. Tips? [more inside]
I am finally going to stop using a paper calendar and start using my laptop/iPhone/iPad instead. However, having used ol' reliable paper for so many years, I'm a bit paranoid about using Google calendar (or an app) and then losing all my data somehow... Is there an iPhone/iPad calendar app that would make me feel more "secure," or is there a service like Backupify that doesn't require a Google Apps account? I'd love to back up my Gmail too, if possible. (Am I just worrying too much? Is using iCloud enough? I am clearly clueless.)
How can I do mail merge in Gmail? All the online "how to" things (e.g.) I am finding are telling me there's mail merge functionality in Google Docs, but I can't even find Google Docs from my gmail account. Do I need to install something? Help. [more inside]

In Gmail, is there a way to chat from an alternate email? They are both Gmail accounts. One is my main, which the chat defaults to. I would like to be able to chat from my alt email so I can don't have to give out my full name to random folks from the internet. I found someone asking this very question on the Gmail forums, but there were no answers.
