I am thinking of moving to the small town of Crisfield, Maryland. I am a (male-to-female) transsexual, and I am wondering how locals will deal with someone like me relocating to their area. Any tips, suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you.

So I'll be turning 21 in a few weeks. And I've decided to actually celebrate, so I'm going to Denver with my brother. But now I'm stressing out about what to do and where to go. That's where you come in.

You are not my tax advisor, but... We're a same-sex married couple in California, trying to make heads or tails out of the (confusing) IRS tax-filing pickle that is in effect for the 2010 tax year. We have to combine our community income, split it in two, add any individual income to the respective partner's form, and then create two separate forms for the IRS for each of us, but check the "single" category for filing status. Here's the dilemma: He gets a W2 (salaried employee). I freelance (several 1099s and a Schedule C). Do I have to duplicate the entire Schedule C across both forms, and put half of each deduction on my form and half on his? :-0 Or do I do the full deductions on my form and fill in something on the adjustment line (line 21, I think it is) on his 1040 form as a way of evening out the reporting?

A friend of mine, who cultivates an image as a mensch, is really a charlatan. He will do anything to be in favor, even if it means betraying his true nature: a gay man who is afraid of ridicule and exile. He moved to a very gay friendly city and his family followed him, to his misfortune. He is relying on me, his best open-minded friend, to set things right. I need some help.

Is "LGBT" the official designation for any particular organization or group, or is it simply an accepted social convention, like saying "white people" or "ball players?"

Bisexualfilter: I am a bisexual, Asian girl who is not quite out of the closet yet. Having a boyfriend kind of pulls me off any possible gaydar at the moment. However, I would like to know what physical "identifiers" there are to know whether someone's not-quite-straight, or whether I can do anything to let people clue in a bit without being too obvious. (So rainbow anything isn't really what I'm looking for, nor those badges that say attempt to be clever but come out trashy.) Thank you very much!

I'm a gay male in my early thirties nearing my sixth year of singlehood, and long since ready to be with someone. However, I've had the hardest time trying to relate to the the gay community. I'm a bit eccentric and will often go to the gay club to write and probably get too wordy with personal ads. It seems that emotional and spiritual depth, along with a lack of care about materialism, just doesn't jibe with the "gay mainstream." My question is this: how can I continue my joyously weird existance, and attract the right person, without diminishing my personality and belief system? What sacrifices must I make with my 'kookiness' and still be me? Thanks!

Ok, so we all saw the hilarity that ensued the last time someone posted a
contemporary religion vs homosexuality thread on the blue. My question is strictly academic. Does christianity truly object or is that a more modern concern based on mistranslation?
Points of discussion say
one thing and then the
other . I, for one, do not have the linguistic background to isolate the wheat from the chaff, and so I ask metafilter. Queer - damnable sin, or something to cleanse yourself of before you go to temple if you're jewish.

South Africa: Company wants us to move there. The question is, do we want to live there? The city is East London. We're a white gay couple (American and Belgian). How safe is it? How much an issue that we're gay and/or foreign? I've searched and asked around, too many conflicting reports.
