Where do you get your cheap or inexpensive reading glasses? The ones with a scratch resistant lens that are priced so you can buy a half dozen pairs and leave them laying around your life?
The cheapos from the hardware store 3.99 or so are good for price but they always scratch right in the center of the lens rendering them useless except for emergencys. The frame can be pretty weak too. This
thread had good answers for scratch resistance but no sources for purchase either on line or off.

I love
these glasses, except that they're too narrow for my face! Any sources for larger versions of that frame? Or failing that, does this style of frame have a more specific name than "plastic half-rim"?

I want to buy funky plates and cups (different for each place setting) The more eclectic and weird, the better. Do you have a favorite plates/cup that you got online that are cheap, funny, and safe for human consumption?(no traces of any chemicals that may cause blindness, irritability, etc..)

Does anyone know what's going on with Zenni Optical's website? I found that site from a Metafilter post a while back. I've been trying to access it for a few days now to check on my order and it's borked.

My employer does not provide vision insurance -and I wear glasses for nearsightedness. The way I see it, I have three options -
1) Use the Lenscrafters coupons in the Sunday paper,
2) Use my AAA member card for a discount at Lenscrafters,
3) Use the measly 20% vision discount I have available as a member of BlueShield, or
4) Sign up for independent vision coverage through a plan like
VSP. Is anyone else in a similar boat? What do you use? What do you recommend
and advise against using?

I saw the most beautiful pair of glasses today. They looked great on me and were a perfect fit when I tried them on. The only problem was they belonged to a stranger on the street.

Just got my first eye prescription for mild farsightedness. The optometrist said my eyes could still focus on things fine so I didn't
need glasses, but if I noticed eyestrain or headaches, then I could fix those problems with glasses. I don't notice eyestrain and only get headaches when I'm low on coffee. Is there any reason to go ahead and get glasses? Do glasses accelerate or slow any futher eye degeneration?

Has anyone recently purchased "transitions" lenses (that go from clear to shaded) for your specs? I remember kids who had these in high school (this was 10+ years ago) and they always looked terrible- half-shaded indoors. I've had a few friends recommend them lately, though.

Several times over the past few months, glasses have come out of my dishwasher sliced into two pieces. The cut is always smooth, and I don't find any glass shards left over. This only happens with glasses--mugs, plates, etc, are entirely unharmed. What might be causing this?
