I need your help naming our (most likely female) baby. We are stuck and looking for a strong, classic name. [more inside]
When you talk to yourself, inside or outside of your head, what do you call yourself? Do you use your given name, your family name, a nickname, what?
Looking for a gift that could help a young girl deal gracefully with the stress of her teen years. [more inside]

I see on AskMe all the time, whenever someone refers to an adult of the female gender as a "girl," several people will immediately pop up to sternly correct them. I've come to accept this as part of the site culture here, and keep it in mind for my own questions and comments, but it quite honestly seems bizarre based on my own life experience. I'm curious how common this view actually is, and whether people actually stick to it in real life. [more inside]

My three-year-old daughter got a haircut yesterday, and in keeping with her rambunctious ways and fine hair, it's short and simple. But the stylist put some product on her hair to make the ends flip out a bit, and it's adorable. I didn't notice what she used and I'd like to recreate the look at home. What do I need to buy? My brother has been looking for this short story for a while -- help me to make his Christmas! Details: A bully is tormenting everyone in school. The main character is a one-armed girl, who is generally disliked. A boy that she likes decides to stand up for everyone one day, and fights the bully. The bully beats him up, but the boy keeps getting up no matter how many times he gets hit. The crowd starts to root for the boy, and the bully starts to feel shaken. The girl, worried about the boy, goes to tell the teacher what's happening, and the teacher breaks it up. The bully is restored to power and the boy calls the girl a mean name. [more inside]
My daughter is almost two, still in diapers. I send her to daycare with a day's supply of diapers and at least one change of clothes. Every single day when I pick her up, she's inevitably wearing her top and diaper, and no bottoms. If I sent her in a dress and tights, she's wearing the dress but no tights. Is this a Problem, or Not a Problem? [more inside]
My daughter is five and has rather fine hair that's a little over shoulder-length. Because of the way our morning schedule works, I am her Primary Hairgiver. While the hairs are fine, the growth is reasonably thick, but it manages to wiggle its way out of any clip that we've tried by lunch. [more inside]

Our daughter is 6. Since potty training 4 years ago, she hasn't been wiping herself well after going to the bathroom. We though the problem would resolve itself (and sometimes wipe her butt ourselves if she goes at home) but it's not, and what used to cause skin irritation is now causing vaginal infections. Basically, there is this girl I really really like, and there are a few things that tell me that the feelings are mutual. But she has already told me... twice... That she just wants to be friends with me. The way she acts with me doesn't match what she says though. [more inside]

can anyone remember the name of that movie, I think it's Brazilian, about the girl photographer/traveler who happens upon a village of old people and stays at the old woman/bread maker's home? the girl uses pinhole photography and is generally treated with suspicion but, over the next couple of days, she affects the people of the town? it's on Netflix instant but damned if I can recall the name.
Back in 1987 or so, I read a children's/YA book that begins with a young girl who survives an end-of-the-world event (nuclear? meteor?) alone with her father and brother in a huge nuclear bunker. The second half of the book is about a girl with the same name who is a descendant of the survivors. Can you help me figure out what this book was? [more inside]
Hi everyone, about a month ago, I asked metafilter whether this girls likes me and whether we were going on a date. I followed everyone's advice and straight up asked her on a date, but now I'm not sure what's going on. Sorry for the wall of text, but I'd like to give you all the details of what happened. Please be aware that this is from my perspective. [more inside]

Since breaking up with my husband a few years ago I resolved to make some female friends. I've never really had girl friends, because I've always had a boyfriend and/or kind of liked doing things by myself (working by myself, writing, starting companies, etc.) I managed to become friends with a few women but I can't get close to them for one reason or another. First, I don't drink or smoke and find the girls I've 'befriended' to have too many vices (they smoke weed, spend time with other friends drinking or partying, have questionable morals (e.g. they are the other woman in their relationship, or have been involved in heavy drugs, etc.) for me to feel like we have a lot in common. I realize.. (contd inside) [more inside]

There is a scene in season 3, episode 4 of Louie ("Daddy's Girlfriend Part 2") where Louie is in a bookstore asking the salesperson (Parker Posie) about recommendations for his ten year old daughter. There is a great exchange where Parker Posie reveals to Louie that there are things about being female, that at that age, start coming "online." And that she knows of books that can "take these feelings, these big emotions, they let you take them out for a safe kind of spin." Then she hands Louie a book. At first I was dying to know what book, specifically, that was. Then I thought I might ask Mefites for recommendations for those types of books. Can y'all help me out? Books for ten year old girls that let them take new teenage emotions and feelings out for a "spin"?

We are trying to think of names for our impending baby girl. I am American and my husband is Japanese. We plan to give her an English first name, Japanese middle and last name. We have settled on a middle name, Miyuki (美幸). So her name thus far is _______ Miyuki xxxxshi. Criteria for English name: must be easily writable in katakana (For example, Wi- isn't great, or Gl-, or x. All of these sounds can be written, but they come out complicated.) must not sound silly in Japanese (this is subjective and related to .) must not end in a long e sound, since middle and last names already do. Prefer a classical name (i.e. something my Grandma would recognize as a name) but no need for it to be especially popular right now. We'll probably avoid the top five or ten most popular names. We are NOT looking for names that do double duty (which is what most of the threads I've found are about). So, not Naomi (always the first name that gets trotted out in these situations). We want a name from each culture that the grandparents on the opposite side can pronounce and that the kid can write when she gets to kindergarten. I'd especially appreciate input from fluent Japanese speakers here, and/or members of mixed families. Thanks!
My wonderful niece is turning 4 soon and I'd like to mail her a small gift along with a birthday card. What are some good gifts under $40 for a girl that age, that are small and easy to mail? Bonus points if it fits in an envelope. A few more details inside. [more inside]

Does anyone happen to know the origin of or story behind this picture, of a camel and a (supposedly) Mongolian girl. This yahoo answer leads to a dead link.
I'm looking for one of those near-forgotten movies from childhood. I don't have a ton of info here. For some reason, I thought for a long time it might be a Sesame Street movie (or episode, or something), but it might just as well have been totally unrelated. The movie/episode climaxes on the top of a huge set of stairs (I recall it as stylistically over the top - sky at the top of the stairs, the stairs themselves were lit up, etc.), and a girl is turned into a star (a literal star, not a celebrity). It was a really sad scene. There were others there to say goodbye to her. It felt like a death, and I definitely cried. It's the only scene I remember, unfortunately. Anyone else remember something like this?
I rented this film on VHS in 1999. It is about a younger french girl, living with her mother in a trailer park. Mother is a drunk, they are poor, she tries to get a job at a food stand at one point (??) There is love interest and conflict and some kind of crisis. I loved this movie and have thought about it often since I saw it but I am afraid that my memories may have started overwriting my recollections. She is a little bit of a feral child, medium length brown hair, very striking. Please help!
My girlfriend told me that recently she has become sad and preoccupied with death. She often finds her mind drifting and starts to ruminate about her life stresses and sometimes death. Please reccomend novels to spark a love of reading and hopefully give her a distraction for when these bouts of worry surface. Preferably novels that are fun, with plots to get lost in or carried away with, and not too heavy or serious. [more inside]

Please help me find stylish, attractive clothes that fit well for a tween girl who is somewhat overweight and not particularly tall-especially jeans, other kinds of pants, bathing suits, and other such items where expected weight/height ratio really matters and can't be fudged in the way that dresses and skirts can. They should be relatively reasonably priced, but I'm willing to splurge if that's the only way this is fixable. [more inside]
