Since breaking up with my husband a few years ago I resolved to make some female friends. I've never really had girl friends, because I've always had a boyfriend and/or kind of liked doing things by myself (working by myself, writing, starting companies, etc.)
I managed to become friends with a few women but I can't get close to them for one reason or another. First, I don't drink or smoke and find the girls I've 'befriended' to have too many vices (they smoke weed, spend time with other friends drinking or partying, have questionable morals (e.g. they are the other woman in their relationship, or have been involved in heavy drugs, etc.) for me to feel like we have a lot in common.
I realize.. (contd inside) [more inside]

There is a scene in season 3, episode 4 of Louie ("Daddy's Girlfriend Part 2") where Louie is in a bookstore asking the salesperson (Parker Posie) about recommendations for his ten year old daughter. There is a great exchange where Parker Posie reveals to Louie that there are things about being female, that at that age, start coming "online." And that she knows of books that can "take these feelings, these big emotions, they let you take them out for a safe kind of spin." Then she hands Louie a book. At first I was dying to know what book, specifically, that was. Then I thought I might ask Mefites for recommendations for those types of books. Can y'all help me out? Books for ten year old girls that let them take new teenage emotions and feelings out for a "spin"?

We are trying to think of names for our impending baby girl. I am American and my husband is Japanese. We plan to give her an English first name, Japanese middle and last name.
We have settled on a middle name, Miyuki (美幸). So her name thus far is _______ Miyuki xxxxshi.
Criteria for English name:
must be easily writable in katakana (For example, Wi- isn't great, or Gl-, or x. All of these sounds can be written, but they come out complicated.)
must not sound silly in Japanese (this is subjective and related to .)
must not end in a long e sound, since middle and last names already do.
Prefer a classical name (i.e. something my Grandma would recognize as a name) but no need for it to be especially popular right now. We'll probably avoid the top five or ten most popular names.
We are NOT looking for names that do double duty (which is what most of the threads I've found are about). So, not Naomi (always the first name that gets trotted out in these situations). We want a name from each culture that the grandparents on the opposite side can pronounce and that the kid can write when she gets to kindergarten.
I'd especially appreciate input from fluent Japanese speakers here, and/or members of mixed families. Thanks!

I'm looking for one of those near-forgotten movies from childhood. I don't have a ton of info here. For some reason, I thought for a long time it might be a Sesame Street movie (or episode, or something), but it might just as well have been totally unrelated. The movie/episode climaxes on the top of a huge set of stairs (I recall it as stylistically over the top - sky at the top of the stairs, the stairs themselves were lit up, etc.), and a girl is turned into a star (a literal star, not a celebrity). It was a really sad scene. There were others there to say goodbye to her. It felt like a death, and I definitely cried. It's the only scene I remember, unfortunately. Anyone else remember something like this?

I rented this film on VHS in 1999. It is about a younger french girl, living with her mother in a trailer park. Mother is a drunk, they are poor, she tries to get a job at a food stand at one point (??)
There is love interest and conflict and some kind of crisis. I loved this movie and have thought about it often since I saw it but I am afraid that my memories may have started overwriting my recollections.
She is a little bit of a feral child, medium length brown hair, very striking. Please help!

My girlfriend told me that recently she has become sad and preoccupied with death. She often finds her mind drifting and starts to ruminate about her life stresses and sometimes death. Please reccomend novels to spark a love of reading and hopefully give her a distraction for when these bouts of worry surface. Preferably novels that are fun, with plots to get lost in or carried away with, and not too heavy or serious. [more inside]

Please help me find stylish, attractive clothes that fit well for a tween girl who is somewhat overweight and not particularly tall-especially jeans, other kinds of pants, bathing suits, and other such items where expected weight/height ratio really matters and can't be fudged in the way that dresses and skirts can. They should be relatively reasonably priced, but I'm willing to splurge if that's the only way this is fixable. [more inside]

First time massage.
It's a legit massage. I'm a guy, I wonder if I should get a guy or a girl to do it? Not sure which would be more awkward really. What is the norm for this sort of thing?
Also, what are the norms of tipping? I can barely tip functionally at restaurants without getting anxious. I don't even know where to begin with what to tip for a massage.

I remember seeing a reference somewhere on mefi float by that I can't find anymore. There was a young girl (8-13?) who had hand-written a design for a video game and someone interviewed her about it, possibly her father. She went into great detail in an audio-only recording about this Portal-like game she made, and somewhere there was a link to the audio and the hand drawn pictures of several horizontally laid out levels. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Can you identify this book? I read it in the mid-1980s. It may or may not have been a YA (Young Adult) title. The protagonist was a young girl, and her society lived peacefully up in the trees. She was interested in seeing the world down on the surface. There may have been another society down there. At one point she lost her temper with someone (a pet?) and blurted out something like "I would like to dead
you!" at which her family was shocked and horrified at her violent thoughts. I particularly remember being struck by that part, that she understood the concept of killing but didn't know the verb. [more inside]
