Ask vs. Guess Culture Meets Gift Giving

My wife and I are blessed to have kind and generous families, for which we are deeply thankful. The "catch" is that we cannot stop them from giving us things we don't need or want (examples within). My wife and I try always to be gracious when receiving gifts, which results in even more of the things we don't need or want. Do you have recommendations for breaking this cycle? [more inside]

How do I become better at giving people gifts?

I feel great gift givers are not always the ones who devote the most time or money to this art - so what are their secrets? I'm happy to consider wisdom derived from science, literature or anecdote. Likewise I am interested in advice centred on observation, triage, shopping, timing, wrapping and so on. What makes a ninja gift giver?

Don't let the dog eat the bunting - rude or informative?

I'm sending my brother + SIL a handmade baby bunting that has been around cats...and they have a dog. It is reasonable or rude to let them know this in case the dog finds it irresistibly chewable? [more inside]

So I'm an ingrate, right?

How do I ask my awesome husband for gifts on special occasions? I am a little disappointed that he did not get me anything for my first Mother's Day (other than a very thoughtful and loving and personal card and flowers he added to the basket the day before when we were shopping together). I hate to sound like an ingrate, but I was a bit disappointed that I didn't get a little gift-wrapped something. Should I say something or should I accept this is the way he is? [more inside]

Mom loves Christmas, but the whole family can't afford it this year...

[EtiquetteFilter] My sister and her new husband are giving me one gift for Christmas. Am I obligated to give each of them a gift, or is it acceptable for me to give one gift to the couple?

Returning the favor

So I completely underestimated the generosity of my co-workers. I'm a part-time employee, still in school, and not exactly at the top of the food chain. But a bunch of people I work with (some above me, some in different departments) gave me holiday gifts. Keep in mind that I'm making just enough to make ends meet. What should I give them in return?
