My fiancee and I are getting married in a month. We have kind of an embarrassingly large bridal party but we love them and want to give them cool presents! We're on a budget (we could probably spend up to $40 per attendant). We are open to creative ideas. Wedding is in San Francisco, and many attendants will be flying in from distant places.

I've been invited to the wedding of the daughter of some casual friends. I live in the US now but most of the weddings I've been to were when I lived in the UK. I'm not sure what an appropriate amount is for a money wedding gift. I've heard it should be equal to or greater than the amount per head the family is paying for the reception. How accurate is this? It seems to me if that's the case, the wedding is less of a celebration than a business transaction. Anyway, I'm afraid of giving an inappropriate amount. Advice please!

A number of years back I gave a pair of Swatches like these as a wedding gift. It's hard to tell from the photo, but one watch has the hours, the other has the minutes. They belong together so much that they barely function separately. I have a bunch of wedding-related gifts to give in the near future. Can anyone recommend paired things in a similar vein?

I recently went to a wedding in Israel with a group of friends. The groom's in-laws let us borrow their car for a week and a friend of the bride acted as tour guide for several days. I'd like to get them each a nice gift in the $100 range, preferably something uniquely American. The inlaws are a 50-ish, fairly cosmopolitan married couple and the bride's friend is a single 30-ish woman. Any suggestions?

EtiquetteFilter: I've received an awful wedding gift from a couple of friends--a tchotchke so ugly and useless it makes me reconsider my opinion of the givers (worse yet, I know for a fact that it isn't a re-gift).

Any tips on a nicely worded thank-you note?

Any help here would be appreciated, as I am at a total loss: A good friend is getting married this month. I am not attending the ceremony, as it is family only, but I would like to send a small congratulatory gift. However, I'm pretty broke. I don't want to go the giftcard route; that's unoriginal. Any of you married MeFites, is there some small, inexpensive gadget/tchotchke you wish you'd been given as a newlywed that you would have appreciated more than a blender or electric can opener?

Portraits. Desperately trying to think of a suitable present for my parents' Ruby Wedding, we came up with the idea of a family portrait. Photography would probably be safer, but how to find something distinctive (they already have a portrait from about 20 years ago, with us looking uncomfortable in "best" clothes, printed on "canvas", all in a heavy gilt frame, bleagh)? Alternatively, how do you arrange for painted portraits (hopefully in a style everyone likes, and is it horribly expensive)? To make things more complicated, we'll only be visiting for a few days, normally living the other side of the world (they're near Leeds, northern England). Advice? Recommendations?
