My longtime friend of more than 20 years is having a formal cocktail party to celebrate his recent engagement to his partner. The invite says no gifts, but I definitely plan to bring a gift. This friend is very special to me. Given this is an LGBT couple (not sure that really matters here, isn't a cocktail party a cocktail party whether it's a gay or straight couple?) I would appreciate your gift ideas. Thank you!

Etiquette Filter: My partner teaches music lessons and the parents of two of his students have invited us to dinner in their home. In addition to the regular payment for the lessons, they are very generous and bring him a gift nearly every time they come for lessons. What gift should we bring for the host & hostess? I'm throwing a surprise party for my wife's 40th birthday this Thursday evening. One of my wife's friends volunteered to have the party at her house. She's also helping to arrange catering from her dad's restaurant (I'm paying for it, but at a steeply discounted rate--and she worked out the menu).
So ... I'd like to give our friend a hosting gift. [more inside]

Gift ideas for corporate gala party favor? Every gift which is given, even though is be small, is in reality great, if it is given with affection.

I've been invited to a Solstice party. The invitation says, "Please come with a symbol of light, wrapped to give away, and something to read about light, original or found." Nothing is popping into my head except a candle... and I already know someone bringing a candle. Ideas? Ideas for readings? I could do a Google search for either thing, but I'd be overwhelmed with results, I think. (And maybe there is a way to wrap the gift that goes along with the theme?)

Longtime lurker, first post. Could you help with some ideas for a white elephant gift exchange party with my coworkers. The company is a fairly conservative large corporation. The gift needs to be secular, inoffensive, good humor and under $20. Last year some popular gifts were Snuggie, Dilbert calendar and so on.. Food/wine seems to be ok but not popular. Any trendy gifts for 2010 or techtoys will also help. Thanks much.

Buying a Wii game for my parents. They have the sports and resort games, I'd like it to be something that multiple people can play, ideally at a party, as that's when they use it the most. Great group Wii games?

A friend made a really sweet, but kind of awkwardly generous, gesture. How to respond gracefully, while still giving her an out? [more inside]

If my wife hosts a baby shower, fairly large (30+ people) for her friend (with all the expense, labour and effort that requires) would she still be expected to give a present to her friend on top of this?

Chinese New Year filter: My husband and I have been invited to a Chinese New Year party. It's being thrown by the sister of a very good friend of ours, but we don't know the sister well at all. Are there appropriate/traditional gift(s) we could bring?
