FolkloreFilter: What entities (?) do I need to read up more about that are like the gebbeth in Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea Trilogy? I want something that occupies (or can) the same physical space as a person but which freerides, parasitises, occupies, drains or otherwise has negative effects on a person.

Help me remember this book that I checked out of the library... ghost story set in New England (I think Maine, but I'm not positive), begins in more or less present day, with an old woman telling the story of the summer she was a teenager and fell in love for the first time. Most of the story takes place in that summer, but also a lot of scenes from the mid-to-late 1800s.

Literary eerie suspense novelists: I've read and loved a certain type of author and I am looking for more like them. Their main novel tropes are unreliable narrators (i.e., are they being haunted by a ghost or their own mind?) and a good balance of suspense and philosophy (well-paced novels of ideas with likable, believable characters). Prose style is literary and intelligent but not metafictional.

In what sense was Roman Polanski the director of "Ghost Writer"?
I see in his wikipedia article that he has been unable to visit many countries because he would be deported to America to face rape charges. I just watched the movie and was clear to me that a lot of stuff was shot in America; the IMDB indeed lists Germany and the UK as locations, but also Massachusetts. How did he direct those scenes from across the ocean? And..when was this all shot? Apparently Polanski had been under house arrest in Switzerland in 2009.
Maybe I just don't totally grok the job of a director, but I don't see how he could have directed the scenes in America. Nobody else is listed on the credits as a director. Was there a Ghost director involved?

A friend of mine has got a ghost. Phenomena include noises from nearby rooms, whispering from under the bed, feelings of pure irrational terror, cold breezes, nightmares, and distinct footsteps. His dog freaks out at these occurrences, and his girlfriend has experienced some of them while sleeping over.

Today I bought a Dell laptop with Vista Home Premium. I want to make a full disk image before I start changing partitions and other things. Booting to my Ghost 2003 cd seems to go well at first. The computer asks me to press any key to boot from the cd. I do. It brings up the menu for driver support. I select 4 for USB 2.0 support. It proceeds and comes to an a: prompt. Here I usually type "c:" (for some reason my other laptop sees the cd as c:), but when I do here it says "invalid drive specification". I tried all drive letters. A: and B: have boot files but no directories so I know they're not the cd. I need to get into cd's \Support directory so I can launch ghost.exe
Thanks for your help.

I'm looking for a young adult collection of ghost/scary stories I read in middle school (1980s). It was illustrated by Edward Gorey and contained a story about a young girl who discovers a creature of some sort living in a quarry near her home. She becomes obsessed/infatuated with the thing and frequently visits it. I remember strong sexual undertones in this story.

Floppy disks? Are you kidding me? I haven't used Symantec Ghost in a long time, but am forced to at the moment. Even back then, floppies were on the way out, and now they're flat-out gone. But as far as I can tell, Ghost still absolutely flat-out requires you to use floppies (which can then be transferred on to CDs) in order to function. Am I right? And if I am, isn't this absolutely insane?

I seem to remember an American TV medical drama in which one of the subplots concerned a patient who had died... but didn't realize he was dead. His ghost wandered around seeking treatment and couldn't understand why nobody paid attention to him. The show may have been "ER" but I'm not sure. Any one else remember this?

How come we never hear about nude ghosts? Clothes always seem to go into the spirit world in anecdote and popular culture. Is this a reflection of society's taboos, or do ghost believers have an explanation?

At work I have a fancy new big giant Apple cinema display. I like it. But I noticed that recently, since I changed my desktop picture to something near 50% grey, I get afterimages - for example, when I close illustrator after working on lineart, I see a ghost of the lineart on my desktop for 15-30 seconds. I thought it was my eyes but my cow-orkers see it too. Is this bad? Can I up the refresh rate on the screen or something? I don't like it.
