What form did the repatriations that were extracted from Germany after WWI take? I am curious as to whether they were in the form of the heavy durable goods that would have accelerated the recovery of German industry or if they were foodstuffs, direct labor or something else. Where can I find data that would give me a breakdown on what the repatriations consisted of?

I'd like to be able to live and work in Germany in the next couple of years. I know that their employment system is the definition of old school - virtually every job requires a multi-year apprenticeship or internship. I'm wondering, are there any exceptions I could exploit to get a job?

The Lives of Others, a movie taking place in East Germany during the Cold War, I noticed that a limousine in the movie was a Volvo. I have also noticed that other movies set in the Eastern Bloc show cars made by Western nations. Is this an oversight by the movie makers, or were these cars actually available at these times?

Mr. Walla and I will be in Freiburg (im Breisgau, in the Black Forest) for the next month or so. We know it's not a big city, but we're hoping the hive mind might have some tips on the area. Favorite places to eat, drink, walk, go on day or weekend trips? English, dancing, yoga classes? We're open to just about anything. We'll be living in the Wiehre neighborhood, and we like to walk/bike. Unfortunate limitations: we speak no German and have no car. Thanks!

I was in Nuremburg, Germany a few years ago and saw a bizarre piece of public art that puzzled me and the Internets has let me down. It is a giant rabid looking rat-like creature (made of copper?) that appears to be going on a rampage. It was located prominently near a castle in the walled city. Can anybody tell me what this horrific sculpture is all about?

How difficult would it be for a nineteen year old with one year of college, moderate work experience, a TEFL certificate and little to no European language ability to get a temporary work visa in the EU? I'm thinking Germany, specifically. I've checked out
this thread, but that seems to pertain mostly to becomig a citizen. I'm not looking to become naturalized or anything (though that would be nice), just find a menial job to support myself for six months or less. Note: I'm willing to accept "impossible" as an answer.

There's a wonderful liqueur that I'd like to buy as a gift, but it's only available from a distillery in Germany. I contacted the distillery, and with my somewhat limited German, was able to ask about shipment to the US. They can ship it, but don't accept payment via credit card, but rather "mit Rechnung." This I believe to be "by check," but I'm not sure. Has anyone had experience with this kind of transaction? Some German sites I saw which also require that kind of payment have forms that ask for a password. Is this an EU thing only?
