I'm working on an architectural research project on late gothic Germanic churches (from about 1500-1650), and feel hamstrung by my ignorance of the cultures and economies in which the architecture was produced. [more inside]

I tried Meggle alphine butter from Germany and really like it. I also tried president butter from France and didnt like the artificial flavor.
Later I tried organic valley the limited edition and was not impressed at all.
Then I tried Kerrygold garlic and herbs butter which basically tastes just like sour cream, not only tasteless but actually kind of disgusting?
I am wondering how does Kerrygold regular butter compared with Meggle? I haven't try it yet but don't want to waste time and money.
Meggle tastes so good, but it's not grass fed I guess. How are butter and dairy products made in Germany , is there anyone know? Really hope it's not antibiotics and hormone loaded.

So...I applied for and received a grant to learn/research/write abroad for 4 months starting in March in the field of librarianship and informatics. The grant will pay for food, shelter, and travel (4 cities in Germany, if it matters). The grant agency is going to try and help me find temporary housing. Very fortunately, my job is ok with this and excited about what I will learn, so I have a job to come back to.
I am simultaneously excited and terrified. IF you've done something like this before...any recommendations? [more inside]

My husband and I are spending next weekend in Leipzig - arriving Friday evening leaving Sunday afternoon/evening, getting to and from by car. We are couchsurfing with people in the south of the city, and have very little in the way of plans other than seeing the train station (we werre last in Leipzig over a decade ago and the train station was closed due to a bomb threat, so we really want to see it this time).
Places to visit, places to eat, cake/beer/meals not to be missed - all ideas gratefully recieved.

What is this dessert I read about on a blog? It was cooked by a German person and the blog author wrote: "It was like a really, really thick pancake cooked in a huge skillet, then cut up into big chunks, and topped with a syrupy, crystallized type of peach topping that was just to DIE for. Everyone in Germany/Austria/Hungary knows what it is". I don't think she knew what it was called, but I want to, because it sounds freaking delicious!

I will be in Germany soon, and would like to buy a wooden advent calendar for my daughter to use for years. Once I was in Germany around this time of year, and a department store had loads of disposable ones with chocolates behind little paper/cardboard doors. But what kind of store would have nicer, more permanent ones? Bonus points for specific store recommendations in Mainz (or the Frankfurt airport). I know I can probably buy one online, but I'd like to buy it on my trip.

I want to read about Munich to get a feel for the city and its inhabitants before I go there next year. What books are out there that a) feature Munich as the setting and a character in its own right, or b) interestingly detail Munich's history? Fiction and nonfiction are both welcome as long as they're awesome.

This is a tripartite question, actually. Where to go in Dresden for: 1) Vintage clothing (not "antique stores," but if the only vintage is to be found in antique stores that'll do); 2) French hair products (see below); 3) genuinely good but inexpensive local cafes and restos? [more inside]

I'm an American interviewing with several companies based in Berlin. These are small Internet companies with fewer than 100 employees. In both cases, the first Skype interview has (seemingly) gone well and I've followed up via email to thank them for the opportunity and reiterate my interest. However, I have not received anything in return after 10+ days. Is this typical? Does silence on their end indicate a lack of interest in proceeding any further? Or should I continue to follow up until I receive an explicit reply, as is typical in the U.S. (in my experience)?
You can reach me at firstname.lastname@example.org if necessary. Thanks!

I just saw a new film called "The Dead and the Living" (Barbara Albert), about a twenty-something girl uncovering the truth about her family's history in Nazi Germany. It reminded me of Costa-Gavras' "The Music Box". Does anyone have any other recommendations for films on a similar theme, specifically about Germany, and specifically about the process of uncovering of the past rather than (as in say "Downfall" or "Das Boot") the past itself?
