Know a good B&B in the North Georgia Mountains?

Recommendations for a bed and breakfast or similar lodging in North Georgia or Tennessee? I would like to gift a night or two getaway to my lovely parents for xmas. They live just north of Atlanta, so a b&b in Appalachian country would be an ideal place to send them. They regularly visit blue ridge and enjoy hiking there, but I'm still looking for a place that is more luxurious than it is "roughing it." Most b&b websites are pretty shoddy, so personal experiences or recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Music for a zakuski gathering?

I am hosting a zakuski gathering soon, and I need music! I already have much Slavic Soul Party and Gogol Bordello. Lounge-y or somewhat mellower than Bordello would be ideal, but I am open to any suggestions. The final constraint is it should be available for purchase as a download. Or legitimately free!

Liquor stores that ship to Georgia?

Having difficulty finding an online liquor store that will ship to Georgia. My Google-fu has failed me. A few years ago, I ordered my wife some Porto Kopke Colheita, which is not sold in Georgia. Unfortunately, the store I ordered from no longer ships to Georgia. The way I understand it, stores outside Georgia can ship to Georgia if they have some sort of license to do so. Apparently the store's license lapsed or something to that effect.

All wines and spirits in Georgia must be approved and ordered through the state liquor board, so some smaller or rarer items just aren't sold here, and cannot be ordered from local stores unless the item is in the state-approved book.

I did some Google searching this afternoon, but it's very difficult to easily find online liquor stores that will ship to Georgia. I looked through several online retailers' shipping policies and even emailed a couple. No luck so far.

Help me, Hive Mind!

Business in Georgia?

I'd like to find out what the climate is like in Georgia -- the country, not the state -- for an American business looking to expand overseas. But when I Google for it, I keep getting results for the state! From what I understand, it's a fairly Western-oriented economy -- low on taxes and bribes, a not-unreasonable amount of bureaucracy, that sort of thing. But beyond looking at the Transparency International ratings, I'm having trouble finding actual data. Can MeFi help?

Explain the mechanics of the Georgia State Supreme Court

I have a family member who won a case in the Georgia court system. It was a well articulated case that a competitor was engaging in predatory business practices that affected a large group of business owners of a particular type of business. The court agreed, and an appeals court declined to hear the appeal. However, another appeal was made to the Georgia Supreme Court. What are the odds that the GA Supreme Court will hear a case already held up during an appeal? This family member has a lawyer and that lawyer was capable enough to win the case, so don't tell him to get a lawyer... :)

However, I have two questions.

First, what are the odds that the GA Supreme Court will hear a case that was already held up on appeal?

Second, how important is it to retain local counsel in Atlanta with Supreme Court experience versus the 'home town' lawyer that got him this far?

Where Can I Buy or Rent Goats?

I want to rent or buy goats in Gwinnett county, Georgia, to clear a brushy, ivy-covered half-acre lot (away from the house). I'm a pi degree black belt in Google-fu but can't come up with nothin'!!! You'd think in my area it would be easier than falling off a lawg. But I own no livestock and never had a goat, so I don't know where to look. Found none on Craigslist. It's kindof embarrassing at this point...I need goats and don't know where to buy (or maybe just rent) them!

Several goat houses and a 4.5 - 5' fence are already in place. Also, can you chain them to a tree and just check daily to see if they tangled themselves up? For my unfenced areas, I mean.

From what I read the rest sounds simple enough...food and water daily, trim hooves every 8 weeks, shots annually, provide shelter, check for ticks and lice...any other big things to know before taking the plunge? I take pretty good care of my cats, never had one die prematurely anyway, and they don't contribute a damn thing. My kids seem healthy, happy, intelligent, and ethical too, fwiw.

Any other insight you have like, get a baby goat, or I'll need at least two goats or, one breed is better than another for this purpose or, don't buy such-and-such a breed unless my fence is eight feet high or, for the love of Cthulhu don't buy a goat you suburban idiot, you can't even keep algae out of the pool, would be appreciated.

How should I say goodbye to the East Coast?

So I'm moving from Baltimore to Atlanta for work - yay, new job! Boo, leaving the East Coast! I've got a month remaining, so in the time between finishing my business here and taking deep breaths, what should I do here that I won't be able to do in the south? I've been here for two years and haven't really explored the area much at all. I'll definitely spend at least one more day in DC and maybe go for a weekend in New York. Any other awesome places I should visit? Are there regional delicacies I won't be able to find in Atlanta? Non-perishable consumer goods? Basically: what should I buy, eat, see, and do? Money's not an issue... just time.

If your best friend was going to Savannah, GA, where would you tell them to eat? As a follow-up to this question, SO and I will be in Savannah soon. We will arrive in time for Saturday dinner, and leaving Sunday afternoon. I perused these two previous questions, and there's a lot of good info there; however it's almost 3 years old, so if anyone has any new advice, we'd love to hear it!

Where should we go for dinner on Saturday? Breakfast on Sunday? and lunch on Sunday?

Things we love: meat (no vegetarians here), cheese, seafood, great southern home cookin', and good beer. Willing to pay more for good food, but love those hole-in-the-wall joints as well. Can be formal or need reservations, or it can be paper napkins and plastic silverware.

Help me get the most out of my Southern US road trip.

I have a follow-up to this Southern US road trip question. My route is firmed up, and I'd like recommendations for anything to see or skip between hotel stops. I'm going to be covering a ton of ground and moving pretty fast. I'm sure that isn't the best way to see the Southern United States, but it is what it is given my time. This will all be happening in early February.

I fly into New Orleans on a Saturday, and will have a night and part of a morning there. I will be returning the following weekend, so I don't need to see everything on this partial day.

Sunday - I've already booked a 1 PM swamp tour to the North East of New Orleans in Slidell. After than I was planning to stop at Bay St. Louis, MS based on aka burlap's recommendation from my previous question. I like arty towns, so that sounded right up my alley. From there, it's on to Pensacola, FL, which is where I'm sleeping Sunday night. Is there anything between Bay St. Louis and Pensacola that I should be sure to see? Or anything in Pensacola that I should be sure to do?

Monday - this is a MONSTER driving day. I need to get to Jacksonville, FL. I was thinking about stopping in Tallahassee for lunch and maybe taking a hike in Apalachicola National Forrest to stretch my legs. Any other recommendations?

Tuesday - I'll be traveling to/staying in Savannah, GA on Tuesday. I was thinking about driving north passed Savannah to check out Hilton Head and then dropping back down to the hotel. Does that make sense? I'm very excited about seeing Savannah. It looks really interesting. Is there anything I should be sure not to miss?

Wednesday - I'll be traveling to/staying in Atlanta, GA. What should I not miss between Savannah and Atlanta? What should I do in Atlanta. I have a friend who mentioned a tour of Coke. Worth it? Or would something else be better?

Thursday - I'll be traveling to/staying in Birmingham, AL. Again, based on the recommendation from the previous thread, I think I'll be spending a lot of time in the Talladega National Forrest. Is there anything in particular I should be sure to see/do?

Friday - I'll be driving back down to New Orleans. Anything between Birmingham and New Orleans that I shouldn't miss?

Saturday/Sunday/Monday - I'm on a company sponsored weekend in New Orleans. Much of my time will be spoken for, but I may have time for one or two major outings. What shouldn't be missed?

Thanks

Thinking about relocating to Savannah - any advice?

I'm thinking about relocating to Savannah, Georgia in a few months to stay for probs a year or so. My background is in advertising and art and also office admin and plenty of retail, customer service and food service - a little bit of everything.

Anyway, I was wondering about cost of living and if it's a cool city to stay in (loved it when I was there) and job prospects. I'm prepping a portfolio to apply to fashion school next fall so I'm looking for a good place to go. Love big cities but they seem to be a massive drain on the bank account (too many awesome rock shows!), but I'm not opposed. Mostly I need a place where I can afford a live/work situation so I can get the artwork done.

Any other recommendations for hip / inspiring / artistic / progressive / bike and walk friendly (no car) cities are welcome.

Female, mid-20s and tired of the Midwest. :)
Thanks in advance!

How to partly claim disability?

Question about being declared disabled but not receiving SSI benefits. A family member has had an accident in the past year and his doctor confirms that he would officially be classified as disabled. He has had a long recuperation and had worked hard to get over his injuries. Besides the 'disabled' classification, he is able to work and owns his own business. He plans to continue working and can easily make the modifications to his business that he needs to continue his job. Here is the tricky part. How can he be declared disabled but not receive any SSI benefits. He has lost contracts in the past because his business isn't owned by a minority or person with a disability. Now that he has a disability, what are the steps to get that classification just for business purposes. Everything that we have researched is in reference to getting the SSI benefits. He CAN work so doesn't want to take those unfairly. He just wants to get the disabled classification in order to be eligible for some of these contracts that come up. Any advice or guidence would help. This is in Georgia. Thank you.
I troubling to find a cheap flight into the area, Russia and Georgia seem to have insane airport tax and their arent many carriers that go direct from the UK to Georgia/South Russia

Tbilisi isnt a good option since the airport got blown up earlier this year

The Russian Port town of Sochi seems to be the closest Airport

However Im wondering there are other options I could consider, maybe flying to another country and getting a Boat into Sochi or a train or a bus ride.

anyone with travel experience of the Caucasian would be a great help

What's the matter with Georgia?

Even after living 2+ years in Georgia (the state, not the country) I find it strange that most people answer the question "Where are you from" with their home county. Coming from the west coast, it seems weird to refer to anything but hometown or general region (so. cal, bay area, etc..) I know GA has like 150 counties (the second most of any state, after Texas), so counties aren't that big. Is this just a Georgia thing? Southern thing? Descendents of convicts thing? What?

Staying in Savannah, GA

Fun suggestions and accommodation for Savannah GA- Filter and/or changing a flight-Filter. I am attending a conference this weekend in Savannah, Georgia. I am supposed to fly in on Friday morning and leave Sunday afternoon.

I have just found out that due to a communication error and an illness of a colleague who will now not be attending, I am now without a hotel room for Friday and Saturday night. Oookay. Neither Mr. Oflinkey nor any friends are able to skip on down last minute to hang out, so I am off alone.

I am looking to do one of two things: Stay in a safe and cheap(er) place Friday and Saturday night and find a few things to do around town Friday and Saturday for a lone woman OR somehow finagle a flight back home Friday night.

Any ideas for safe hotels or B&Bs? Things to do? Alternately does anyone have suggestions for changing flights above and beyond the obvious? I am about to get on the phone with Expedia to see what the damage would be through them, but if anyone has had luck doing other things, I would appreciate the suggestions. Or the reality check that I have no options in that arena.

Sakartvelo on my mind

HospitalityFilter: What would be a nice parting gift or gifts for a guest from (the Republic of) Georgia spending three weeks in the U.S.? My family is hosting a Georgian woman for three weeks starting tonight. She's a school principal visiting with ~20 other Georgians on a USAID-sponsored rural education training program. She's from a coastal town on the Black Sea, and she's married and has daughters aged 11 and 8. She'll be here long enough that I'll be able to figure out some personal gifts for her and her loved ones, and I plan to put together a photo album for her before she goes, but I'm trying to think of some more general gifts that might commemorate her trip, be suitable to share with her friends and acquaintances in Georgia, and maybe even generically represent the U.S. I really want to steer clear of flags and maps and kitschy things that she can easily get elsewhere.

Her luggage space is limited, and shipping is unreliable, so small things are best. I'm not aware of any significant restrictions on bringing packaged foods like chocolates etc. into Georgia. I think the limits for her will have more to do with weight/space than content.

Any other thoughts on international hosting and/or gift-giving are appreciated as well.

Is anyone Twittering or live-blogging the ongoing conflict between Russia and Georgia? Any one know of any first hand accounts, twitterers, or blogs set up to follow the conflict from the front lines? English or Russian is fine, just looking for something I can add to my RSS feed.

Not looking for one time articles, but rather a regularly updated source. Thanks!

Looking for advice on attending the Georgia-Florida college football game in Jacksonville, Florida on November 1. Most convenient hotel? How do I get tickets? Do I need a car? Where is the most fun to be had besides the stadium? Not a high roller, but I don't mind paying for hotel/rental car/parking/ticket broker etc. I don't really have connections in the Jacksonville area or at either school.

4 day road trip on the US' East Coast: What to see, where to stay, what to eat?

Roadtrip along the US' East Coast from New York to Port Canveral, FL with 4 days to make the drive. Where should we stop along the way to enjoy ourselves? It's just my wife and myself, so there's no children to consider. The roadtrip is from July 17th-20th (considering leaving after work on the 16th to give us even more time). We'll be taking I-95 down and it'll take us through New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia & Florida.

This isn't the first time we'll be making the drive but it is the first time we're stopping along the way for anything more than a place to sleep.

We've never really gotten to enjoy North Carolina, South Carolina or Georgia so our plans are to make that the focus of most of our free time there, stopping in Raleigh, NC, Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA, but we can easily be swayed elsewhere (although Savannah is calling us).

We'd also like to end up within 4-5 hours of Port Canaveral on the final night, the 19th, so we can get to our cruise relatively early. We've picked St. Augustine, FL, mainly because it seems central to a bunch of places we plan to hit up from Roadfood. We're certainly not tied down to the place so other recommendations are welcome.

We're always on the lookout for good eats, preferably with a local flavor, but it's nice to have somewhere to explore when the eating's done.

So where should two hungry travelers expand their horizons along the eastern seaboard?

I need salon/spa recommendations in Savannah or Richmond Hill GA. Specifically, I'm looking for a place to get a brazilian wax and also looking for a new hair stylist. Bonus if I can find them in one location or close together. Super-bonus if there's a bit of interesting shopping near by.

How do I get a low/no cost divorce when I live in Mobile, Alabama but my spouse lives in Georgia?

How do I get a low/no cost divorce when I live in Mobile, Alabama but my spouse lives in Georgia? Some states offer something like Alaska's dissolution of marriage, but it appears to me (though I do not know for sure, because I cannot find the actual law) that Alabama doesn't allow this. I know for a fact that Georgia does not. My soon to be ex said he would file but being true to his personality, he has not and that presents a problem. Alabama law requires that the divorce be filed in Georgia, because that is where we last lived together. Although my understanding is that I can file in Alabama if I can prove that we've been separated for six months, which we have. Is there any way to do an interstate dissolution? That's probably a silly question.

I have found "forms" online that can purchased which claim to be legal in Alabama, but this seems suspect to me because the law isn't clear. I don't want to go through all the paperwork to find that it won't stand up in court. Not only that, but there was a large amount of debt incurred during the marriage which I would prefer not to be responsible for. He was notorious for ignoring bills and hiding costs. I want everything declared and divided. Whatever else which was incurred that isn't declared, he should be responsible for.

Am I better off just getting a lawyer? How do I find an inexpensive, but good one? I don't know anyone here so I have no one to ask. He hasn't paid me anything for child support (not that he has much himself) and I have very little money.

The key here is cost, convenience and not having to go into further debt.

Any advice?

Ever been in an investment partnership?

Tell me about your experience with investment partnerships. (Multiple questions inside.) I’m interested in pooling some funds with some friends and to try our hands in market investments. (This is in the US, Georgia)

I gather that we’ll need to establish a tax identity with the IRS. Where can I find more details about the tax implications?

How did you decide how to assign ownership of the partnership’s assets? What happens if a new person wants to buy in, or someone wants to cash out?

Which banks and brokerages work well for multiple account owners with low costs?

Road trip along the South Carolina coast

We're taking a road trip soon from Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, North Carolina to Savannah, Georgia. What do recommend seeing along the way? Favorite food stops? Non-touristy interesting spots? Think boiled peanuts, not golf courses. Our path is fairly set. We'll take I-40 to Wilmington and then drive the coast from there to Savannah.

Sadly, we only have 2-3 days to do that drive, so visiting NC's Outer Banks is probably too far. Next trip. We'd like to see the fun, small, offbeat places and avoid the traps like Myrtle Beach.

Keep in mind that this is in February. Thanks!

What should we not miss in a 3 day drive from New Orleans to Atlanta? Looking for interesting cultural, historical, musical or culinary experiences. Would prefer the non-touristy stops. We know the places to hit in New Orleans and Atlanta - how about the places in between? The small towns off the beaten path... the weird... the cooky... the naturally beautiful...
