I'm a big baseball fan, and I have a big interest in cultural history. I own lots of ballcaps and t-shirts from minor league teams of the present and past and from different reigons and countries. But I've never worn any Negro League gear, since as somebody said once, i'd feel kind of like I'm wearing a Purple Heart without getting wounded. On the other hand maybe, I'm showing disrespect by not wearing my fandom like any other team. I dunno. Maybe I'm in plate of beans territory.
After reading this thread on the blue, and thinking of this prior question on the behavior of the non-amateur, I ask: What are the tools that experts in your field use? A preferred brand, the must-have piece of equipment? [more inside]
I'm looking for some glasses or goggles for biking. Details inside. [more inside]
I spontaneously decided to join a friend's 2-day camping trip - I'll be meeting them at the campsite early tomorrow morning. I'm not an avid camper, and don't want to forget anything that might be considered a no-brainer. I'd appreciate advice on any camping essentials I may be forgetting - list of what I'm planning on bringing at the moment is inside. I'd also like advice on ready-to-eat meals or meals which can be easily prepared at the campsite. [more inside]
Preparing for our first baby in October and trying to figure out the smartest approach to equipping ourselves with everything we're going to need. So many choices to make! What things should we pay more for because we'd regret pinching pennies, and when is splurging on the pricier stuff a waste? What should we look for new vs used (and not just for safety issues like carseats, but also what's the key "never waste your money on buying X new, you can get it so much cheaper used" stuff)? [more inside]
Divers - why is it so difficult to sell used dive gear? And where/how is the best way to do so? [more inside]

I will be working as a deckhand on a tall ship this summer, sailing up and down the East Coast of the U.S. I need to buy foul weather gear in the next few days. I know I need a jacket, pants, boots, and a rigging knife. What should I look for when I purchase these items? Is there anything else essential that I need, gear-wise? [more inside]

I'm looking to start backpacking/rough camping this year, and I've had a hard time picking a guide. Can you recommend a book (preferred) or a website for this sort of thing? I've done some not-so-rough campground camping before, but it was alway drive-in camping. We'd love to start off with over nighters and work our way up from there. We don't know what type of pack/tent/gear to get at all. Bonus: guides for the tri-state (Philadelphia-New Jersey-Delaware) area camping/packing would be nice, too. Thanks!

With just about every activity that I ended up enjoying, I started out by buying cheap-ish gear and then having to purchase everything all over again when I was ready to upgrade. Help me not do that when it comes to a randonee/alpine touring ski setup to be used in the Pacific Northwest backcountry. Complications: I'm a 5'0" woman with mondo size 22 feet, don't weigh a whole lot, and I'm going back to skiing after a decade of snowboarding (lessons start next month and I tend to be a very fast learner). I've my backpack, all clothing and avy gear, but I need skis, bindings, boots, poles, and skins. I'm on a budget and unfortunately nothing is available used in my size, but I'm willing to invest. Help?
In my personal view of photography and life in general, the "convenience" that, for me, is the only advantage that digital cameras have over film (specially if we talk about medium format film), was never something I cared about. However I may have to start caring about it, at least part of the time. The thing is, I have no idea of what camera to get, so I would like some advice. [more inside]
I want a teeny tiny music player to take along when running. All it needs to do is do Spotify in offline mode. [more inside]
I'm looking for interesting things to add to what will amount to an Innovation Starter Kit for a small group of faculty who I'm trying to encourage to think a little differently about education. So far I'm thinking about things like Sugru, Chromecast, a Leap Motion Controller, maybe some light-sensitive paper... What else can I add? [more inside]
In the 2004-2006 timeframe I recall discussion on websites I frequented at the time (which I cannot recall now) about a European man whom carried many pounds of gear everyday. Things like writing pens, hand tools, survival tools, lighters, etc.... There was also a particular website that detailed all the items he carried, mostly in his coat and on his belt, including photos. My google skills are failing me. He was/is northern european, maybe French, Belgium or English. I would like some web=links to this information, if still available?
Can you recommend durable, somewhat fitted, not outrageously expensive work pants that will fit a small woman (5'0", 100 lbs, athletic build)? And by work I don't mean office-appropriate: I'm a carpenter and I spend my days at a grimy construction site. [more inside]

I'm ready to up my photography game. I live in a gorgeous place with lots of interesting things to photograph-- wildlife, birds, water and mountains, abandoned infrastructure-- and my iPhone 4 can't produce pictures that are rich or detailed enough to do it all justice (or blow up for prints, or be good blog fodder). However, I'm not interested in a DSLR because I know I'm unlikely to actually have it with me when opportunities present themselves, and at this point I'm not really technically proficient enough to justify the cost. What point and shoot models should I consider? [more inside]
I have access to a pro deal from Patagonia for a few more months. What are some men's essentials that it would be worth it to purchase / stock up on? I ski, hike and am getting more into mountaineering. There are a fair amount of things from Patagonia that I consider ridiculous for the price, so I'm just curious which one's are actually worth it.
I currently live in the Southern US, but next month I'm making a trip to Southern Argentina and next year I'm moving to New York. I guess it's time to buy warm clothes! Can you give me some recommendations on warm, light, layerable winter clothes, particularly a coat? [more inside]

I love the game developer Platinum Games, and buy everything they put out. Their new game, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, is the latest in a long-running series with a famously incomprehensible backstory? I've played a bit of Metal Gear Solid 2 and didn't really enjoy it. I'd like to know a. if anyone who's played MGR: Revengeance knows what backstory I need to enjoy it or b. if anyone can provide a summary or a link to a quick summary of Metal Gear Solid's backstory.

What is the best way to get two snowboards (and associated gear) from Seattle, Washington to Aspen, Colorado if we don't know where we will be staying while there? Flying with the snowboards would be hugely inconvenient, since travel plans include two continents and several cities with extended stopovers before we eventually meet up in Aspen for NYE.
