Pretty pink and purple

I saw some potted flowers on someone's front gate and I would like to know what they are. They were bright pink, shaped like impatiens, but the leaves were a uniform and solid dark maroon/purple. They were sort of the same color as maple leaves before they turn in the fall. Unfortunately, I could not get a picture of the plant, and I have been looking at images of impatiens and other flowers all night with no luck. Green thumbs of AskMe, do you have any ideas?

Why are my tomatoes rotting on the vine?

Gardening question! I've got a potted tomato plant, with tons of green tomatoes. They were ripening up nicely, but when I went to pick some, they were rotting on the vine. Cracked at the stem and rotting in the center. The green ones are already cracking and darkening around the stem. See picture. What's wrong with them?

Save my mom's tomatoes from the squirrels

My mother has a squirrel problem. She has a ton of tomato plants and now that they're coming in, the squirrels are picking them and eating part of them. Is there something she can do to save her plants? Note: killing the squirrels is not an option--she would rather not have tomatoes than kill the squirrels.

Thorns, Thorns Everywhere!

I am going to inherit neglected piece of land that is covered in wild blackberry bush. There are fruit trees and currants somewhere in there, but I can't get to them. I don't know where to start with this - I would like to make this piece of land manageable, but I don't want to use herbicides and kill everything in sight. Are there any earth-friendly/permaculture solutions to this?

Now they look like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/60463163@N06/?saved=1 Please help! What should I do? I live in San Jose, zone 8B if that matters.
