I have a row of cypress trees denoting one property line. There are 14 of them, about 30-40 ft. They are useless as a fence as the bottom 10 ft of each is completely denuded. Nothing grows in a 6 ft strip either side - is there some miracle plant that would enjoy this hostile environment? If I have them removed, will the soil recover? As an Englishman in Portland, Oregon, I'd dearly love a beech hedge there...

I'm thinking about starting an indoor hydroponic garden soon, using a guide I found on Instructables for DWC. We have a new house and huge yard. We're eager to fill it with plantlife. In fact, we're a little too eager and found some good prices, so we already bought over 200 seedlings, half of which are kale and chard. We live in Davis, CA, in the CA central valley near Sacramento, in the west region that is known for particularly clay-y soil. Our main source of garden information is from: http://daviswiki.org/gardening *** See inside for 9 questions we have as last-minute uneducated gardeners.... [more inside]

Seeking help from MeFi gardeners! We're about to move into a place that we're really excited about, and our landlady- who lives next door- wants us to have a plan for the garden. I saw some potted flowers on someone's front gate and I would like to know what they are. They were bright pink, shaped like impatiens, but the leaves were a uniform and solid dark maroon/purple. They were sort of the same color as maple leaves before they turn in the fall. Unfortunately, I could not get a picture of the plant, and I have been looking at images of impatiens and other flowers all night with no luck. Green thumbs of AskMe, do you have any ideas?

Gardening question! I've got a potted tomato plant, with tons of green tomatoes. They were ripening up nicely, but when I went to pick some, they were rotting on the vine. My mother has a squirrel problem. She has a ton of tomato plants and now that they're coming in, the squirrels are picking them and eating part of them.
