So, about a year and a half ago, we bought a house! Awesome. For the first time, I have a back yard and a front yard and a lawn and...
stuff, and I don't know, maybe because I'm old and boring now, I've started to give a crap about making my lawn look nice. Something is really starting to piss me off...

Now that I have a balcony, I wanted a little garden out there with window boxes. I purchased window boxes and a bag of Miracle Gro online. I already had two potted flowers that were about to burst from their pots. (I was going to buy more tomorrow after the boxes arrived and I had an idea how much room I would have.) The Miracle Gro arrived and despite no warning on the website, it says "Not for use in containers." Will I kill my flowers if I go ahead and use it?

What kind of peppers are these, and when will they be ripe?
I got a pepper plant from the farmer's market on a whim, and it's started making a bunch of tiny little peppers. Except! I lost the little tag that says what kind of peppers they are and I have no idea when they'll be ripe. I do know the guy said they're edible, they are not just ornamental, but I can't tell, and there are all sorts of colors going on with these cute little guys.

Someone stole a potted plant off of my back porch. I'm assuming it was a neighbor or guest of a neighbor, because our alley is locked off. Anyway I am pretty sad and angry (who steals a plant??? It was a $2 farmer's market plant in a $15 pot), and also worried about my other plants. How can I protect them?

Talk to me about building a perennial garden from the ground up. I'm a fairly new gardener, and have recently bought a number of plants online. This worked well, because we have a small but complicated garden layout (in terms of sun/shade/water) and I can figure out specifics without getting overwhelmed. I also enjoy being present in a nursery to see the plants in person, but the good places are a fairly long drive away and weekend crowds can drive me insane.
Given a list of desired plants, how do you go about buying them? What is the most cost effective way of doing this?

I have a cherry tomato plant and a few pepper plants (scotch bonnets and jalapenos) in pots in a window that faces due west - they get bright shade until about 3 pm, and then hot, direct sun until about 6:30 pm. Should I move them to the front garden (facing south) in the mornings?

I need a fairly cheap, hard to kill, awfully pretty plant that comes in a 6-pack or more of bedding plants. And would be happy in a small pot.

Has anyone else noticed that in loose-leaf packages of spinach from the store there's often a few leaves of a grass-like green in with them? What are they, and why do they go bad so fast?

I want to know how deep and how wide the roots of various plants will normally grow. Trees, gourd vines, wheat, clover, tomatoes, garlic, cilantro, marigolds, everything. I want to make sure my raised beds are high enough and also want to prevent plants from choking each other out.

I saw some potted flowers on someone's front gate and I would like to know what they are. They were bright pink, shaped like impatiens, but the leaves were a uniform and solid dark maroon/purple. They were sort of the same color as maple leaves before they turn in the fall. Unfortunately, I could not get a picture of the plant, and I have been looking at images of impatiens and other flowers all night with no luck. Green thumbs of AskMe, do you have any ideas?

I planted climbing peas about 2 weeks ago and they are turning yellow, drying out despite a fair amount of water, and losing their nice green color. I think I overwatered them to begin with, but I let them go without water for a few days, and put them outside so they could get more light. Now they look like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/60463163@N06/?saved=1
Please help! What should I do? I live in San Jose, zone 8B if that matters. Nights are in the upper 40's and days are in the mid to upper 60's. Gardening newbie, all other plants are doing well.

[Plant Filter] How do I care for my new dwarf conifer, a Lawson Cypress also known as "Treasure Island"? I purchased him from my local nursery two days ago, where they were selling small "living Christmas trees" as novelties. It is a very lovely little tree, and I would actually like to keep it potted inside if possible, but I'm not sure if it will be too warm for this species.

What can I plant on a hot, windy roof garden? My New York City apartment boasts a private roof deck. The problem: It gets constant sun all day long, and is the tallest building around, so it can get quite windy. Nearly everything I've planted has shriveled and died. What will work?

Are miniature cacti just younger plants or do they have their own name or classification? Awhile ago I saw some tiny (~1 in. apiece) cacti for sale in a big box garden/home supply store, but am not having luck finding them online (getting a lot of hits for dollhouse miniatures, etc). I would like to buy some but know neither the right terminology to use, nor where I'd buy them. I've already browsed several online cacti stores w/o success. Thanks for your help tracking this down!
