Creative uses for old cut stones (blank tombstones)?

My house was built in 1890. When I had foundation work done several years ago, the workers dug out a lot of dirt from under my house, and in that dirt they found a bunch of cut and carved stones - pure white marble, limestone, and granite. [more inside]

Beautifying my backyard, and I need a little help!

I live in zone 9b (northern CA) and I'm looking for good ground-cover plants that are hearty, can withstand moist/rocky soil, and need lots of water. The challenge is that this area (about 8 square feet) is right next to the foundation of our house, and the gutter pours water into the area. Details below the fold. [more inside]

Help me design the ideal mini-farm!

It's time to begin my dream garden - help me design it! I've always dreamt of being self-sufficient enough to virtually take my family off the food grid. Last year we moved to a house with an acre of land, all woods, and as soon as this latest snow dump disappears the contractors will arrive and clear approximately 5,000 sf of it (out-of-scale pictures here). I'm poised on the brink of drawing up plans and am eager for some input; I've got the wee beginnings of an orchard coming in March, plus the beds will be built of harvested timbers and thus fairly permanent, so I want to get the design right the first time.
