I want to replace my single panel, up & over garage door with doors that open to the side. It looks like it will be some trouble to get the kind of doors I want, so will it be worth it? [more inside]
For reasons, most of my books are in long-term storage. Please help me keep them safe. [more inside]
I have a house. It has a walk-in basement, it does not have a garage. I have ~3 gallons of gasoline in appropriate containers. I think it's probably unwise to put this in my basement (with a water heater, electrical stuff, etc. not to mention the whole being effectively inside my house thing). Is storing it outside in a storage tote a good solution? Why or why not? [more inside]
I have a bunch of boxes of books and other paper ephemera to store. I'll store all I can inside the house, but some, surely, will have to go in the garage--good roof, but not climate controlled, and door is drafty. Hot and humid in summer and cold and dry in winter. How to make the best of it? [more inside]
I would like to find a *reasonably priced* guesthouse in the Los Angeles area, specifically in or near Glendale/Pasadena/La Crescenta/Montrose. [more inside]
We have a leak somewhere above our garage, and nobody seems to be able to figure out where it is coming from. I've heard a few stories from different contractors, but I'm clueless when it comes to home improvement and I don't know how to tell what to actually believe. Help? [more inside]
I tend to accumulate surplus hardware (brackets, hinges, etc) in the workshop. Lately I've been thinking of timing things out: if some random part been idle for X months then dispose of it. I'm wondering if anyone has used a scheme like this and what the pros and cons might be. Logistically I was just going to date-stamp things on the day they get added to the random collection of parts, and make a periodic pass to weed out unused items.
My neighbor and I share a garage door that we'd like to keep secure. Without walking around the block, it's easier for me to open it from within and easier for him to open it from without. Currently, the door is locked with a latch and a padlock on the outside, but I'd like to be able to unlock it from the inside too. Is there a solution?
We have a Liftmaster 2000sdr and while the opener itself works fine, neither of our wireless remotes can get a response anymore. [more inside]
My 1954 MCM ranch house still has the original single-panel garage door (see here). The original spring hardware looks pretty scary...but how dangerous is it, and what are my options for eventually replacing it/the door with something that won't anger my inner design critic? [more inside]
One of our cats is a habitual out-of-litterbox toilet user. Due to this issue, we've had to put him in the garage at night when we can't keep an eye on him. However, we recently purchased a new car and plan to begin putting it in the garage - but we're not sure how to keep that cat - plus possible one other - from urinating on the car. Can anyone think of some solutions? Right now all I can think of is a cover or tarp.
The house I have has a motion detection floodlight installed (http://amzn.to/1KyAd5N). Unfortunately, the original installation was a bit too high, so most of this floodlight is shadowed by the roof eave. I would like to lower it by about 6 inches. I don't want to change the original circular mount that's in the wall. Is there such a thing as an adapter/pipe that I can install connect to the original circular mount that I can then reattach the floodlight too? (Kind of like a periscope) I'd welcome other solutions - but I'm not very handy.
I have 4 different garage door opener remotes and half of them are failing. I'd like to replace them with a single universal remote. I think I need a learning remote with 4 different buttons, but I'm open to suggestions. [more inside]

I own a condo in a six unit building. Five of us own spaces in a garage on the other side of the backyard. Some garages (which are separated by walls) have doors opening to the backyard; mine doesn't. So I'm planning to add a door, which will require cutting through the wall of the garage and extending the sidewalk in the backyard to reach my new door. Should I ask the condo association pay for any part of this?
Heated garage, just cold water pipe run to it. What's the easiest way to add hot (or vaguely warm) water to my utility sink? [more inside]

I'm going through my father's garage, and have come across two waist high piles of magazines from the 1970's, most likely waiting room material left over from when he owned a small business. They seem to mostly be "Woman's Day" and "Woman" magazines from 1970-1974. Should I separate the decent ones from the yellowing and crumbled ones, and try to sell them? [more inside]
The paint on our wooden garage door is seriously peeling, and I want to re-paint it. How should I go about this? What tools do I need? What kind of paint should I use? Brand recommendations welcome. [more inside]
I need help identifying these gross things that have appeared on my garage walls in the last week or so. They are grayish-brown, each about the size of a piece of orzo, and are stuck to the walls in my garage. I can spot about a dozen of them around the garage, but I don't know how many more might be hidden behind boxes, etc. I suspect it is some sort of poop or some sort of egg sac, both things that completely gross me out. The shape is pretty unique to all of them. I live in Southern California, with temps over the last few months ranging between 55 and 85F. Anyone have an idea what these might be? Pic inside. My wife and I have a rather old Lexus with low miles. On each of the last two times we took it out, the car shuddered a couple of times (like driving over a bump) and then lost all engine power, conking out in the middle of the road. There was no sound involved--just that little shudder, and then no power. Each time, we had to push it to the shoulder. Each time, the car would start up again with no problem--but would not stay on. Some more details inside--any ideas what's up? [more inside]
With all the cold weather we've been having, the bedroom above our single car garage has been positively chilly. The rest of the house is nice and toasty, but that one room is several degrees cooler than anywhere else in the house. How can we make it better? [more inside]

A hummingbird is trapped in my garage...and it seems to be a pretty stubborn one. The real problem is that we have a fixed skylight-type window that it constantly tries to fly out of - it won't go any other way. We opened the other window and the garage doors, but it's just so darn stubborn! [more inside]
There is a door between my apartment and my landlords' garage. On the garage side, the cracks around the door are taped over with some sort of tape, and there is a big piece of styrofoam which blocks noise reasonably well. There is a nice air exchanger system in the apartment. But right next to this door is a bathroom which is a bit of an air circulation dead-end, and still smells a bit exhaust-y on occasion. What additional non-permanent steps can I take, affecting my side of the door, to further seal it off? [more inside]
My partner and I have just moved into a new rental in South Australia. It has a double garage with electric roller doors on the front. We want to use this space for storage and the landlord has agreed to let us enclose the rear and the open side (between the side fence and the roof). Originally I was thinking cafe blinds, but now I'm wondering if that will be too costly. We are getting a quote next week. If it turns out to be over our budget, which is not really set but probably around the $1,000 mark, what else could work to enclose the garage? Thanks.
I'd like to turn my old (built around 1925) garage into a comfortable office/workspace, but because this is a rental I don't want to spend a lot of money. It's basically a 10x10 wood box with one very tiny window and a couple overhead flourescent lights. Biggest problems: It gets hot in the summer/cold in winter, and smells kinda weird. Your help urgently requested! [more inside]
When we bought our house, the garage came with some very nice cabinets already installed. This weekend I found myself wanting a few extra shelves for them, and I have so far been unsuccessful in finding any that will work. They are fairly standard looking white melamine shelves, but apparently the size is unusual. Is there somewhere I can go to get truly custom shelves made (or find a wider variety of sizes)? I have a two-car garage with a LiftMaster automatic garage door opener that is misbehaving and it's driving me crazy. It seems to be randomly just opening the door long after it is closed and I can't figure out why. I've seen the other questions about garage door openers but was hoping for some advice specific to my situation. [more inside]

After record heat waves here in Wisconsin, one day my automatic garage door closed, and as it touched the ground, I heard the top panel of the door "pop" into place. From that point on, it won't open without someone there to manually lift it through about 50% of the way open. Suggestions? [more inside]
