(Posting for non-mefites) Couple in their 30’s, happily married 10 years, no children, they have great weekends, great vacations. However, husband comes home tired from work, default evenings are husband/iPad, wife/computer. What are some playing together or parallel play options? [more inside]

Educational videogames tend to be aimed at children and/or not much fun to play (and/or both). "Typing of the Dead" is a great exception. Are there other truly addictive videogames a grownup can enjoy while learning something? The subject being taught is irrelevant-- I'd just love for my gaming time to result in some sort of useful skill. [more inside]

After spending more time on them than he should, my 7 year old has decided that he wants to make his own flash game. I have done the obligatory googling without finding anything obviously suitable.
Are there any applications out there (free or $) designed or suited for kids? I don't imagine that he will be making anything from scratch, but assume there are some drag and drop applications out there with which he can have fun. Thanks.

I've got a memory of seeing a long list of books, either recommended reading or as acknowleged sources of material, in an early edition of the Warhammer 40K rulebook. In my recollection it neatly sumarised all the works that influenced WH40k. Did this actually exist? What were the books on the list?

L.A. Noire has lots of references to Bioshock -- namely (heh), Fontaine and Ryan.

I haven't look at a new pen-and-paper RPG since sometime in the mid 90s, but I'm kind of curious what's happened in the past 10-15 years or so? What are the best fairly recent pen-and-paper RPGs -- what are the most popular ones that are new. I assume stuff like D&D and World of Darkness are still around, but what are some fairly recentish ones that have gotten big followings?
Have there been any that introduced really new mechanics or game play philosophies?

My friend is currently out serving somewhere in the middle east for the next six months and would like some new computer games to play. The problem is that he has absolutely no internet connection so anything that needs to go online (eg. multiplayer or - more annoyingly - DRM) won't work. What good games can you recommend I buy and post to him? [more inside]

After much grueling labor and self-denial, I have created a virtual Windows 98 machine on my macbook using VirtualBox, all in the name of playing my favorite computer game from high school. The only problem? The most colors the virtual machine wants to display is 16, and this game requires at least 256. Ugh. How to remedy this? [more inside]

Is there any site which is as awesome for playing Go with a friend as lichess
is for chess? "Awesome" means more specifically lightweight (dial-up friendly), browser-based, ad-free, no registration required.
