I want to play Bully: Scholarship Edition on my Xbox 360. There was just a patch released for the game, but my console is not hooked up to the internet and never will be. How (and when) can I know that the physical copy of the game I buy is a post-patch version?

My Xbox 360 is in Microsoft's Xbox hospital being repaired and I'm jonesing for some game time, even if I could just play my original Xbox games. I remember back in the NES days you could rent consoles but not so much anymore, I assume because of the complexity and Faberge egg-like delicacy of systems like the 360. But is there someplace, anywhere in the greater Phoenix (AZ) area that I could rent a system? A first gen Xbox would be fine. Failing that, any other creative ideas besides using my computer for games which I've already tried? I'm in the Chandler/Gilbert area FWIW.

Can anyone recommend any interesting historical military simulation games for Windows? There's a ton of titles and reviews out there and I can't figure out where to start. I'm not looking for mindless shoot-em-up action but rather an engaging game that draws its substance from real battles or wars (esp. WWII, Vietnam, or Korea) and gets good marks for historical attention to detail. Ground, air, or both.

A friend in Illinois and I (here in California) would like to play an online RPG together. We really don't care about monsters and stuff; we want to harass and kill other players (and each other). That's just more fun. He's on a PC, I'm on a mac, we both have fast connections and decent machines ... we tried the free version of Wolfenstein, and while I enjoy killing nazis, his blowing me up with grenades got old after awhile. Any suggestions? Can we be pirates or ninjas on World of Warcraft? Or, like, cowboys? Cause those things are all really cool. I wish there were a massive pirates RPG, that would be the best. Also: it can't be super expensive because we've got, like, bills to pay and stuff.

For a school fundraiser, my wife (a teacher at the school) and I are donating a "Video Game Bonanza Night". This will be six elementary school-age children coming over to play videogames on a 50" HDTV and an outside projection system. I have an Xbox, GC, PS2, DC, and the N64, and some kid-friendly games (Super Monkey Ball, Katamari Damacy, DDR). I would like to offer a few others, and need suggestions on good kid-friendly party games.

In the back of a booklet of Cheapass Games, they talk about how Monopoly can be envisioned as a game with land mines. Every time you damage someone, the life points they lose are added to yours. Building a minefield hurts you, but once you've built it, it will damage other players whenever they land on the space, etc, etc. Then they proceed to describe a pirate game, which is actually another game that they do not name. I'm going crazy trying to identify this mystery game. [come inside, won't you?]

I am going to be participating in a Halo 2 Kill-A-Thon tomorrow night. I do not own an Xbox myself, so i don't get much practice time. I am getting better at Halo, but i still seem to be an easy target for experienced players. Are there some basic techniques that i should know or other tips that will help me be a little more of a threat and less of an easy mark?

Well, the time appears to have finally come. With my kids starting to cross over the 10 threshold I am on the verge of caving in on the gaming console issue. As a kid who wanted an Atari 2600 but got a TI-99/4a it took me a while to realize that gaming consoles are now pretty much part of the background recreation matrix/social experience of kids and not an extravagant extra. Anyway, they get good grades and I wound up working for a while as a game programmer and it did not kill me.

So parenting aside, I was wondering if anyone could suggest some good sources of information on the three major platforms (XBox, GameCube, PS2). The kids told me that their friends mostly have PS2s and that they like the GameCube, but I just want to make sure that, say, in February the next generation of platform hardware won't come out and they stop production of titles for what we get. FWIW their tastes are Backyard sports games, Civilization 3, and Hobbit/Harry Potter type games -- but they remind me that playing those and Zaxxon on the family PC do not a gaming system make. Oh, and there any must-have accessories that we should take care of up front? Cheers.

Good, multiplayer, web based strategy games. They have to be out there. None have quite done it for me yet, for which I should be thankful but am not.

What's a good MMORPG to get started with? I don't want to pay a monthly fee, and I want something that is beginner-friendly. Star Wars Galaxies seemed like the way to go, but I won't be playing it enough to pay a monthly fee on top of the purchase price.
