Video game "playing cars" is fun!

My son and I love playing in the cars on Lego Batman: The Video Game (Wii). What other "vehicle toy" games are there? It's a lot of fun to have your characters jump into the cars on Lego Batman and just drive around, running amok, especially 2 players. Smashing into things, people, and each other. Trying to tip over or bounce as high as we can, etc! Just "play", not racing or trying to get anywhere, though that could potentially be fun too as long as fairly low on the competitive/difficulty ladder. Easy controls (at least for the basics) a must.

Split-screen/"second-person" perspective a la Mario Kart isn't necessarily a dealbreaker but definitely isn't preferred. That sort of game is fun, but "play" really needs a shared context where both players can be about equally seen in a single view. Likewise, not having a timer/other "arbitrary" interruptions is a plus. It's really cool and funny when you on occasion run into something that blows up, so destruction/EXCITEment would be good.

Have a Wii, so Wii or GameCube (including VC or WiiWare) would be preferred; might be talked into a PS2 since I already "need" one and it's always nice to have an excuse.

Game Cube recommendations similar to Resident Evil 4

I have a gamecube but the only game I have enjoyed immensely is Resident Evil 4. Didn't like the other Resident Evil games' controls and such. Any other games for the 'cube that you can recommend that are first person shooter, whether it be horror/sci-fi like Resiident Evil 4 or maybe a crime game? (Kinda over the WW2 games)...Man, I am a cynical gamecuber, ay...thanks for you thoughts and suggestions. I really appreciate it as I try to get as much use out of this cube as I can.

Gaming for the new oldbie

I'm 40ish. I know nothing about modern gaming. I used to love adventure games back in the 80s like Zak McKraken, KGB and Thermonuclear Wargames. I have some time on my hands and want to take the plunge into the modern world of gaming. Where do I start? I had a look at those role-playing multi-user games like Second Life and I just don't see the point. Maybe I'm missing something. I like games that involve some (if not, a lot of) thinking. I guess I used to enjoy SOME games that involved a lot of manual dexterity - I did play Wolfenstein 3D when it first came out. I am not a huge science fiction fan. I like games that teach you something maybe. But again, I shouldn't put too many restrictions down - I might surprise myself. So I guess I'm looking for ideas for games and platforms to play them on. Again, I know nothing - never owned any gaming equipment before so please don't assume I actually do know what I'm looking for!

Please recommend good entertainment console emulators for Mac OS X Intel. I used to use zsnes, nesticle, ultraHLE, Bleem, etc. a few years ago under DOS and Wintel, but I'm no longer sure what the applications of choice are under OS X Intel.
WARNING! Challenger Approaching!

Do you like the original Super Smash Brothers, for Nintendo 64, more than the sequel, Super Smash Brothers Melee? If so, why? With the release of SSB Brawl just days away and my desire to play the game having reached epic proportions, I've been reading any information I can find on the game. One thing I've noticed is a decent camp of people who think that Melee was disappointing and hope that Brawl is more like the N64 original.

I loved the original game back in the N64 days, but I've always thought that Melee improved on it in just about every way imaginable. So I'm posing the question here: if you liked the N64 version of Smash Brothers more than the Gamecube version, why do you feel that way?

Recommended service for DVD/GameCube disk repair?

Can anyone recommend a good mail-in service that will repair/resurface DVDs or Game Cube disks? Over the past couple of years MeFi has helped me choose a system, find good titles for my daughter, and get my kids to dance. Now as I am cleaning up stuff around the house I find that I have 16 or so Nintendo GameCube disks that no longer work. I have tried the home fix-it systems, and tried toothpaste, and Pledge, and Brasso. No such luck.

I have looked online and found some places that will resurface for a reasonable price ($4-6/disk), but it is hard to tell if it is just a guy in a garage who will run it through his home fix it system, or his toothbrush, dustmop, or Brasso applicator thing.

Can anyone recommend a service that they had good experience with? Thanks much!

Have you ever seen the blue spiny shell that locks on to the leader in Mario Kart referred to as a 'Master Shell'? It's usually called a 'Blue Shell' or a 'Spiny Shell' in the manuals, but I feel certain that I saw it called a 'Master Shell' in an early manual somewhere for a Mario game that may not have been in the Kart series. I've always called it a Master Shell, but google has no knowledge of anyone calling it that (other than me). I figure on something such as this, google is pretty definitive; is it possible that there is something that was once written in a videogame manual that google is not aware of?

Obviously, this is an extremely important question. Have you ever heard it called a 'Master Shell', or did I just make it up?

GameCube kids games?

What GameCube games are good for small children? My friends have a bright 2-year old. I have a GameCube that is collecting dust. I was thinking about giving the system to them, but something tells me Metroid Prime and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker might be a little advanced for someone still struggling to form complete words. Are there any games for this system that a 2-5 year old might enjoy? I remember playing Atari as a young kid whenever I could get my hands on it, but times have changed...

Can you recommend a great adventure game?

My wife and I like hanging out and playing console adventure games together for fun, but we've run out of things to play. We like puzzle-type adventure games (Zelda games are the best), and platformer/explorers like Jak & Daxter, Prince of Persia, Beyond Good & Evil and Ratchet & Clank. We've also been through the Baldur's Gate/D&D Heroes/Champions of Norrath type hack and slash stuff, but they get kinda boring. We like playing World of Warcraft together but sometimes couch potato games on a giant screen is just the ticket. So what's your favorite adventure game for PS2 or GC? Multiplayer is not necessary since we take turns, but if it forces you to think, that's a bonus. Can you recommend?

(Note: If you're wondering where to get a wife like this, I suspect she's the only one there is).

eBay Supply & Demand question: I'm trying to get hold of some Gamecube Component video cables, which have recently gone out of production and are going for outlandish auction prices. If I wait it out, will demand decrease and the prices go down, or will this item just become even harder to find and therefore even more expensive? I want component cables for my Gamecube, but in the recent past Nintendo has ceased production of them. These things were not plentiful to begin with, and there are no third-party alternatives to my knowledge.

For several weeks I have been repeatedly outbid on eBay (as I refuse to go any higher than a particular price I have set for myself), and I've watched as auction prices routinely go to twice, and in some cases even three times the original worth. Not to mention the often extortionistic shipping costs.

So, yeah; I guess I'm just wondering if this is going to get worse or better as time goes on. I'm a patient guy - I can keep waiting if need be.

Also, sub-question: Is there a better way to get these things?

We have a family GameCube and the kids want a dance game. Apparently Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix will be unavailable in North America for several months, and when I go to Best Buy and look at all of the stuff I feel old and confused.

Calling all Nintendo Gamecube owners! Should I buy Legend of Zelda: Four Swords for the GCN? I'm a huge Zelda fan and have been with the series since it started back on the NES, having played almost every incarnation of the series (I have yet to play Minnish Cap, though I dearly want to). My only hesitation with buying Four Swords is that I have read that it is mostly a multiplayer based game, and since I don't know anybody with a Gameboy Advance, I don't want to shell out almost $100AUS for a game which I won't be able to play as it seems to have been intended to play.

I have heard that there is a single player mode, but no one, not even online reviews, seem to be able to tell me if the single player mode is an awesome experience in and of itself, or whether or not it's just been tacked on for the hell of it.

So if anyone here owns it, or has played it, or simply knows, tell me if I should buy Legend of Zelda: Four Swords for the GCN, bearing in mind that I will only probably ever play the single player mode.

Fix My Gamecube

Just bought a used Gamecube and basically every time I try to play it, the device freezes. If I leave it off for a long period of time, I can play for longer before it freezes. I suppose that means it's an overheating issue. I can see some dust inside, but can't get in to clean and check it out because I don't have a Nintendo security bit. Also, right around the time it freezes, the graphics corrupt. Any ideas on how to remedy the problem?

Zelda Windwaker Help!

Zeldafilter - Can anyone tell me where Makar goes if you die in the wind temple and then save? In Zelda: Windwaker, for the Gamecube, there is a section of the wind temple where you have to leave your partner, Makar, outside while you fight some baddies. Well, I died fighting those baddies, and hit save by accident, and now Makar is nowhere to be found. I can't find him at his home island, and I can't locate him in the dungeon. FAQ's / walkthroughs of Windwaker have been no help. I need Makar to beat this level, and I'm not prepared to start a new game at this point. Please help!

Online Consumer Fraud

Online Consumer Fraud: Some time ago I purchased an imported Japanese GameCube game for someone on Buyritegames. However, I was stupid enough to be lured by its pricing on Froogle and did not check its reputation before hand. [More Inside] Only after ordering I realized that this online store has the worst reseller rating ever and tons, tons of complaints from everybody who bought from them. I contacted them through the phone only to be greeted by a machine (with no option to leave messages), and they did not send any confirmation email after the payment through debit card.

I emailed them to cancel the shipping, but I did not hear back.

I used the online form for Better Business Bureau for North Carolina where their office is situated. BBB did reportedly email them requesting for them to contact us, but they did not respond within that given period of time (around 7 days I think.) BBB also said that since Buyritegames is not a member of BBB, they cannot do anything about this except to publish a report.

After quite some time, Buyritegames replied with an "apology" and asked whether I would still want the game. I said no, and that I would like a refund inclusive of shipping. That was the last I heard from them.

So, what can I do beside paying for a very expensive lesson on shopping online? Thank you very much for your advice.

GameCube Games

For starters, thanks to everyone who responded to my question about taking the gaming system plunge. It was exceptionally helpful to my wife and I: now have the GameCube and accessories hidden safely for next week.

I was wondering if you have suggestions for titles that would be suitable for a first grade girl. The boys are easy, but our daughter likes painting/drawing and character/puzzle games like Spirit (about the animated horse movie) that are based more on helping. Harvest Moon was suggested, but I can't tell if that is too old for her and I can't get a good fix on the plot line. Any suggestions from the community would be much appreciated, thanks!

PS2, GameCube, or XBox?

Well, the time appears to have finally come. With my kids starting to cross over the 10 threshold I am on the verge of caving in on the gaming console issue. As a kid who wanted an Atari 2600 but got a TI-99/4a it took me a while to realize that gaming consoles are now pretty much part of the background recreation matrix/social experience of kids and not an extravagant extra. Anyway, they get good grades and I wound up working for a while as a game programmer and it did not kill me.

So parenting aside, I was wondering if anyone could suggest some good sources of information on the three major platforms (XBox, GameCube, PS2). The kids told me that their friends mostly have PS2s and that they like the GameCube, but I just want to make sure that, say, in February the next generation of platform hardware won't come out and they stop production of titles for what we get. FWIW their tastes are Backyard sports games, Civilization 3, and Hobbit/Harry Potter type games -- but they remind me that playing those and Zaxxon on the family PC do not a gaming system make. Oh, and there any must-have accessories that we should take care of up front? Cheers.

Multiplayer FPS for Gamecube recommendations

VideoGameRecommendationFilter: I thought Goldeneye was a great multiplayer game. What first-person-shooter for the Gamecube would y'all recommend as being the most like it and/or the most fun in terms of multiplayer?
