This morning someone posted a sweet gaming room to reddit (picture has since been taken down), and it made me think, "gee, I'm an adult now, I can do anything I want
!" And since I'm nothing if not impulsive, I now really want to buy a video game console. For the first time ever. If I use both hands, I still have leftover fingers when counting the number of times I've played a video game in my life. Show me your ways, geeks of MetaFilter! [more inside]

Since the first Nintendo game console came out in the 80's, I can recall everyone I know (myself included) blowing into the game cartridge and/or the Nintendo itself when something went wrong (freezing, etc.). What is the premise for doing this (I saw other people do it, and sometimes it seemed to work, so that's why I did, thinking maybe dustiness/debris was the issue...), and is there any legit evidence that this really fixes things?

This is very video-game centric. I've worked on lots of games in a half dozen studios, and I've noticed that the architecture of game code with respect to sharing between projects is often ad-hoc and unplanned... [more inside]

I'm looking for a PC game that came out in the mid to late 90's (after 1994.) It was a Sci-Fi RTS/first person shooter hybrid game. I want to say it was one of the first of those. It was not the Battlezone remake though I believe it came out around the same time. The main FPS element was you driving around a futuristic tank. [more inside]

I remember an RPG... I think it was for DOS or Windows. It was a kind of puzzle/mystery genre game, and it was like all video? Like your character walking around was sort of a mortal kombat video captured sprite walking around realistic (also kind of grainy video-y) backgrounds. The main character was a woman, I think she was asian, pretty sure she had long black hair. Can you identify the game?

I'm trying to remember an old gold mining video game (probably mid to late 80s). I think it was dos. It was similar to Miner VGA, but after playing that a few times it was definitely not that game. [more inside]

I was hoping that someone could name the turn-based space strategy game I played as a demo on my PC back around 1995. I offer these sketchy details:
--it was a turn-based game where you piloted and battled using one or more spaceships
--the game offered the intriguing feature of allowing you to design new spaceships
--I remember learning the word "chassis" from the game, since you could choose what type of chassis you wanted in ship design, among other choices
--the GUI was predominantly a gray-colored menu with text and options that you could interact with using the mouse, along with some more-or-less static images of planets and spaceships
--I don't recall much in the way of storyline or even characters
--I think you didn't see faces of characters much at all, or much of them otherwise.
Thank you for trying to help me penetrate the obscurity.

I plan to spend 2 weeks in the west coast to one day move there. I am hoping to travel to various cities and explore video game related places. I want to network and talk to people from all video game walks of life, from indie developers to touring game studios. What places should I visit? What studios does tours?
I was planning to tour around late June, but should I center it around PAX Prime?

I remember seeing a reference somewhere on mefi float by that I can't find anymore. There was a young girl (8-13?) who had hand-written a design for a video game and someone interviewed her about it, possibly her father. She went into great detail in an audio-only recording about this Portal-like game she made, and somewhere there was a link to the audio and the hand drawn pictures of several horizontally laid out levels. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I'm looking for PC/Mac (have both) games similar to Indigo Prophecy and Shadow of Destiny. I loved the games because of the way your previous choices influence later ones, as well as the surreal and psychological aspects present. Both of the games have a similar 'feel' that I'm looking for. Any suggestion is great as long as it's not a point and click adventure game.

Please help me determine the best software (windows) for an interactive video/video game art project. I'd like to have participants use a video game controller to create a realtime animation by cycling through different sprites and "drawing" their paths on a single scene.
Or better yet - where can I find someone skilled in programming who might want to collaborate on such a project?
I can't seem to determine whether to look at game-construction apps or interactive video apps (vvvv, Processing, etc.) [more inside]
