I'm going on a 10+ day bike ride and want to be able to use my fantastic
Nokia 6110 (with built in GPS) and my ipod Nano as long as possible. I bought a cheap solar panel charger on ebay and have found that it's useless. What are the best solutions? So far under consideration are better solar, a spare battery for the phone and emergency chargers that can be recharged when I can get to mains power.
The 'name brand' solar chargers around, the
solio and the
freeloader also have
negative reviews. The
Freeplay 12V looks cool, but has also got some pretty poor
reviews (but at least it looks like it works).
What would you recommend?

Now that Lik-Sang is dead, where do I turn if I want to import games, or even better, electronic gadgets, computers and such. There was one big site I remember seeing (but, of course, can't remember the URL) that seemed to have quite a few laptops and cameras. Where do you import your gadgetry and games (to the US)?

I'm looking for a box/cupboard/whatever that can store all my household electronic bits and bobs (ipods, moblie phones, PDA, digital camera etc) in one place without them, the cables and the accessories getting tangled up. I've thought those junk drawer organisers with lots of different sized compartments might work, but they're not big enough and I'd prefer something stand alone. Something that could accommodate a multi-plug socket and hide all the cables would be even better. Any ideas?

I really like the sound of the intro guitar on Modest Mouse's song "Worm vs. Bird." It's a sort of compressed, almost tubular sound. I am an electric guitar n00b. Is this sound somewhat replicable with a simple pedal purchase, or do I have to go buy some obscure vintage guitar and run it through a tube amp built by elves or something?

I'm going to be in San Francisco for a conference from 3/14-->3/18, but sadly not the emerging technology conference. Anyway, I was wondering if there is anything like Japan's Akihabara--some sort of dense flea market with strange gadgets and such, that I might visit.
Any sort of robot-themed "performance" involving flammable materials would be cool too, but I've heard that Survival Research Labs isn't allowed to play in the city any longer.
In short, what would be some cool geeky/techy things to do while there that might not be available elsewhere and won't land me in jail?

GPS solutions. I hate getting lost and not knowing alternate routes when I'm driving and it seems that increasingly I wish I had some sort of navigation unit. So I started looking. In-car systems are about $2k (and stuck in a single car), portable handheld ones are about $600 (I can use in other cars, which is good), but I hear iPaq PDA units with GPS are only about $500. Has anyone used an iPaq for road trips? Does it work ok with the small screen? What's the best add-on GPS to get for it? And what kind of iPaq do I need as a base to make it work?

Help-Me-Decide-Filter?
I just won a $500 gift certificate/shopping-spree from the good folks at
Vanns. From their limited selection I've narrowed down my choice to either a
40gig iPod or a
Sony 17" LCD Monitor (SDM-HS73/W). I don't really need either item, as I have a monitor that works just fine and I have a 10gig 2nd generation iPod (although its getting really scuffy looking). The LCD monitor is more expensive (so I would feel like I am taking better advantage of the prize), but I've only seen a few reviews out there (mostly positive) on its quality. So is there anybody out there who's used this LCD monitor? If not, do you think I'd be wiser to go with one product over the other?

There seems to be a rash of "usb/mp3 voice recorder" flash thingies out there right now, like
this. Many of them appear to be the same unit or same chipset, rebranded. Is there a good site that reviews stuff like this--generic gadgets available only online? And more specifically, how do I find the best one of these that will mount without drivers on my Ibook? I'd like to get something cheap to take voice notes in the car and be able to listen to mp3s.
I've been googling but not many reviews have come in. Many thanks.

I recall an application for the Treo 600 phone which allowed me to dump pictures from my phone directly to my Mac bypassing the built in route which only allows you to transfer images by emailing them. I think I saw it on Gizmodo or Boing Boing a while back, but can't find it now when I search. Anyone know what the name of this Palm application is?
