Coping with failure and moving forward with life

I'm graduating college with the least desirable outcome possible--low GPA, no honors, no club involvement, no positive relationships with my professors etc. in kind of a useless liberal arts major, purely because of laziness. This in addition to the fact that it wasted over $200k of my parents money is making me feel really bad (as it should). How do I move on from what feels like a really big failure? [more inside]

Stay for love or move for money?

I have a possible job opportunity (and similar ones in the future, if I don't take this one) at a prestigious institution in my field that would allow me to live a comfortable middle-class life, pay my debts, and raise a family or own a house someday. I love my current job, relationship, home, and community, but I'm stuck at a pay level that's barely adequate to cover my bills each month and that's unlikely to increase much over the course of my career. How do I proceed? [more inside]

Should I change my job and my country of residence?

I am facing a huge question that I don't know how to navigate and don't feel like I can talk to anyone about. The short story is that I have a precarious-feeling academic job in the Midwestern U.S. and applied for a job in an English-speaking country in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, I found out that I am on the short list for the job. And now I'm just not sure what to do. [more inside]

Trying to make a change in my life, but I don't know where to start?

I am in a weird phase of my life where I want to change some things. I have always been a rather antisocial person and for the first time ever I am dying to get out and be social. I am also wondering where I will end up and what my goals in life truly are. I also want to get healthier, eat better, be more productive. Truth is, I don't know where to start? [more inside]

"How could I bring a child into this world?" The climate change edition.

Many people I know who aren't global warming skeptics are still planning to procreate. Though I might like to have a kid someday, the thought of their future quality of life strikes me as a potentially decisive ethical objection to it. While I've seen plenty of arguments against procreation that deal with the ethics of creating more consumers, that issue is distinct from the ethics of creating new sufferers. Can you point me to any well-reasoned arguments--whether yours or something you've seen, on either side of the issue--that deal with the ethics of choosing to bring children into a hotter world? Is this investing in my future or is this a stupid decision?

I've been offered to be hired where I have been a contractor. However, there is a health insurance issue that would cost me a lot of money for several months. Feeling impatient with my impatience.

I am impatient. Not with standing in line or waiting for my name to be called (I actually don't mind that), but with life. I cannot sustain a practice of "living in the moment". Future mapping -- what do I do about school.

I'm 29 and finally ready to attend college for the first time. A year ago, I fixated on a program (up-and-coming) and a school (local, private, VERY well-regarded). Since last August I've been admitted, laid off, rejected for loans, hired, rejected for *more* loans. Last week I came to terms with not attending this September. Today I was unexpectedly approved for more aid that will almost cover my tuition (but none of my living expenses). Orientation starts in two weeks. [more inside]

Where's the cutting edge of democracy?

After last month's manifestations in Brazil, we're talking a lot about the future of democracy. Direct digital representation, continuous public opinion feedback loops, Big Brother-like continuous surveillance of elected officials, this sort of thing. So I want to know, is this actually being tried anywhere? What is the world's most technologically advanced democracy? It doesn't matter if it's a nation-state, a city or just an institution — How is it working? How did you guys pull it off? Are there any books on this sort of thing?

Help me find passages from speculative science fiction regarding food.

Looking for sci-fi writers' imaginings of gastronomy in the future, innovative cooking techniques, haute cuisine of the year 3000, that sort of thing. Descriptions can be mundane, fantastical or technojargony. Can include imaginary or extraterrestrial ingredients. Any medium is fine (film, TV, book, etc.). Adjacent genres such as fantasy would work too.

Medium has invited me, should I RSVP?

Medium, a 'thingy' on the web, which is apparently in beta, has just sent me an invitation to come and write. Its been difficult searching for reviews or information about them due to their name. I've been recently burnt by Posterous' closure with the sudden demise of a popular* group blog I'd initiated. I would appreciate your thoughts on this medium (heh), whether I should consider writing there, particularly wrt its longevity or survival, and any other insights on its target audience, reputation and/or credibility, before investing time, effort and original content once more. The personal database of the future?

So I've been using Evernote for a while now to organize research, projects I'm working on, collecting articles, recipes, etc. I've used Backpack in the past to organize projects and plan trips. I'm curious about possibly upcoming/newer solutions that are in this similar vein that might be more robust, have better search capabilities, etc for collecting and organizing all the information in your digital life. What do you guys use? What comes after Evernote? What is the precursor to "Computer.. pull up all recipes that involve chicken, cheese, and cilantro." or "Computer.. all articles on Ruby on Rails relating to PostgreSQL databases." or even... "Computer.. all guitar tabs I've collected by Modest Mouse" (Who knows, maybe I just have to wait for Evernote to advance) [more inside]

What do I really want from myself, anyway?

I'm trying to figure out what direction I should guide my future in. Problem is, when I take most personality (*cough* Myers-Briggs *cough*) or skill tests, I can never overcome the bias of what I "should" want, or what my field (the sciences) have conditioned me to. What can I do that can help me figure myself out that isn't sensitive to bias and will basically catch me "off guard" so I can figure out my strengths/weaknesses/potential truthfully? [more inside]

What techniques should be used to find the already written future of me?

Let's say that certain phases of my life were already written in a book 70 - 100 years ago by someone, who was either a futurist of a scifi-writer. Let's also say that there are people, who want to make sure - for some yet unknown reason - that I live through those phases and that my personality gets developed similarly to some character's personality in that book. The book would have been written a long time before I was born. Now, what kind of search engines and what kind of search strategies I should use to become sure that there actually is such a book? There might exists traces of revitalizing of the book, if the original writer didn't make good enough guesses about the future.

Help Me Feed the Need to Spread My Seed

After reading a number of articles such as this on Metafilter, I realized that I might want to have kids soon, before it's too late. I have a biological clock and that instinct is telling me I ought to propagate before my sperm becomes useless. However, I have no immediate desire to parent anyone. My instincts are only concerned with reproduction, not any of the details. My thought is that I could become a sperm donor. I have no emotional need to ever meet my kids (though I have nothing against it either) - it would be enough to know that they're out there somewhere. However, I am confused by some of the potential ramifications. (Snowflake details inside.) [more inside]
