I just bought a farm table that the previous owner had in a NYC apt that got hot and cold with vicious radiator heat. It's got some warping and cracking, but it's still beautiful and I'd like to do everything I can to prevent it from getting further damaged over time. I thought I'd just give it a good coat of linseed oil, but the surface is very lightly stained, and I read elsewhere that linseed oil is meant for naked wood. Any suggestions on how to treat my new baby? Thank you!
We are moving into our first flat! Hooray! However, it is unfurnished, so we need to buy us some furniture - specifically, a good sofa and a good dining/gaming table. If we go Ikea, what's the sweet spot between price and durability? [more inside]
The husbot and I really wanted this media console from CB2 for our new TV and electronic whatnots. It was in stock and ready to ship the other day, but now it's listed as "Estimated in mid-March." Knowing how backorders go, it could be sooner or later than that, or just never materialize at all. Can you help us find something similar that is available now? [more inside]
Can a hypothetical furniture buyer ethically keep this hypothetical dining table? Say someone you know ordered a dining room table and chairs from a major furniture retailer (think Pottery Barn). The table was delivered by a third-party furniture delivery company and the chairs were sent, a week later, via UPS. Once it's all together, the buyer decides that it's not what he wants and calls the retailer to arrange a return. "No problem," the customer service agent says. "Repackage the chairs and send them back via UPS. The third-party delivery company will contact you to arrange pickup of the table within five days." Chairs go back the next day. Seven days elapse and no call from the delivery company. The buyer calls the retailer and explains the situation, and the customer service agent refunds the entire order price to the buyer's credit card and says that the third-party delivery company should call one of these days to arrange to pick up the table. "What if they don't?" asks the buyer. "Well, you've received a full refund for the order," says the agent, "so you're not really responsible for the table anymore." [more inside]

I'm looking for information on the various bits of furniture and storage boxes that Lewis and Clark took with them on their voyage of discovery but am not finding much. One of my 17 year old Laserline CD towers broke. The one that broke held 400 CDs and my total collection is somewhere in the 800 range. I need one or more storage towers/racks to hold at least 400, and possibly all of them at some point. Besides being able to store a lot of CDs, the other feature it needs to have is "slots". Most current storage options for large quantities of CDs, are basically empty shelves for you to fill. My CDs are in a particular oder, so if one is out, I want to be able to see the missing CDs at a glance. Any suggestions?
I bought a new couch. It got delivered yesterday. The couch is damaged (though it's very minor). I'm going to call "the guy" today and "work something out." Please help me choose the best option. [more inside]

I have used Soft Paws to prevent my two cats from scratching our furniture in the past, and they worked really well. However, either they redesigned their glue dispenser, or I've developed serious glue-handling issues, because I went through three bottles of glue spilling all over the place before I gave up. Is it safe to use Krazy Glue, or some similar product instead of the glue they provide? [more inside]

What can I do with a massive entertainment cabinet after getting rid of the television? None of the local charities are interested (and I don't blame them). For reference, it's 6'10" tall x 8' wide x 2' deep, the doors need 18" clearance to open, the upper shelves are glass, and I hate needing to worry about the glass doors. All suggestions (kindling? cat gym? ding-dong ditch it somewhere?) on where to take it or how to repurpose it are welcome! [more inside]

How long have furniture manufacturers been dousing foam padding with chemical flame retardants? My husband and I would like to start a family in the near future and we're trying to eliminate and replace our PBDE-saturated furniture in order to create a safer environment for baby. All the new organic/ natural latex padded furniture we've found is way out of our price range, so I'm wondering if vintage finds (sans lead paint) might be another safe alternative?
