I need a nice ladder. Where do I find this?

I need a nice folding ladder that can be used in a library with nine-foot ceilings. I don't think we have the room or the budget for one with rails. Everything I see is short, metal, or ugly. Where can I find a nice ladder that can fold up, doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and looks okay in a library.

Information about this unique chair design

A desk is a dangerous place from which to view the world

Crate & Barrel has this modular shelving unit/desk hybrid which would be perfect for my needs, except the shelving unit doesn't actually hold very much. I thought IKEA had something similar but they don't really (their desk sticks out at a 90 degree angle from the shelves). Do you know of anyone who sells a shelving system like this (with a desk option) that will actually hold books. Thanks!

Help me reupholster leather desk chair

I have a leather computer desk chair that I got 2 years ago that I really like and they don't sell it anymore, it is very ergonomic. I have tried out other chairs and not found one as good. The leather has torn in several places and I need to reupholster it. I don't want to take it somewhere to be reupholstered becasue a) I don't have the money and B) I would have nothing to sit on while it is in the shop. The thing is I don't know anything about reupholstering , let alone what looks somewhat complicated due to all the panels, in it. I have made a video showing in detail the chair, and the problems with it. I will be very grateful to anyone who can help with with this. This is the video.

How do I fabricate stuff?

What books will show me how to fabricate stuff? The FabLab curriculum is oriented more towards digital fabrication techniques, but I'm interested more in (seemingly) simple things such as all the different types of fasteners for hanging things on walls, or how to make objects that serve a function (e.g., a lamp, or a steel-and-wood bench) look less, well, home-made. I guess what I'm asking, and have a hard time translating into a search query, is: how do I learn to make the things I want to make look more designed and less like they were a Saturday-afternoon hobby project? (which, in all fairness, they are) [more inside]

What are good resources for intermediate metalworking?

MetalFilter: I can measure, chop, & weld. What's next? I'd like to take the class again (mostly for open access to the metal shop). But before I do, I'd like to go in with more direction, a bigger vocabulary, and plans for what I want to build. looking for a chair that folds in three

When I was little I had this chair that folds into three parts (upper for your back, middle for bottom, and a lower part for legs). When you need to store it all folds up. The "fabric" was a bunch of plastic/vinyl "tubing" pieced together. I'm trying to find something similar but can't find it. It could be best categorized as beach furniture or maybe patio furniture. This one comes pretty close: here, but I can't find anything else similar to it. Any ideas?

I just refinished a hardwood floor. How to speed up the drying process?

I used Minwax polyurethane (oil-based) to refinish a hardwood floor. It's been a day and still is a bit tacky. I understand that I should wait until the floor completely dries to move furniture back in, but I don't have anywhere else comfortable to sleep and I am getting antsy (it is my bedroom/workroom!) Any ways to speed up the drying process? Maybe I could use an electric ceramic heater - or is that dangerous? Or maybe a fan? Finding good furniture in Toronto

small cups for my legs

What I'm search for may not exist. We have recently purchased a new metal-framed coffee-table with legs that taper down to ~1/2" at the floor. With the legs being so slender, they are creating little holes in the pile of the rug that they rest on. I'm looking for something like this, but perhaps only 1/2" wide so they aren't so obvious in the middle of the living room. The smallest I've been able to find is about 3X that size. Thoughts? I'm aware of the stick-on rubber/felt pads that are available and may need to go in that direction, but thought I'd see if anybody has some other ideas like above. thank you.

Where can I buy a couch & chair for my elderly dad with bad knees?

Hi hivemind. I'm in Northern California and stumped. I decked out my lovely, elderly parents' place, but foolishly bought stylish soft couches/chairs with no arm rests. I now need firm couches and sturdy chairs before either of them has a fall because of balance/knee issues. But when I google, I often find articles about how important the right furniture is, but one one site that offers a selection of furniture options for seniors. Or I find sites that seem to sell such furniture in bulk, to senior living facilities (and often don't list prices without starting a business account). I'm wondering if I'm just looking in the wrong place, and if so, where should I look? Or, have you bought great furniture for someone with limited mobility? Where did you look? What do you like? Thanks!

Snags from pets on our new couch.

We just bought a house and got a new couch about 4 months ago. The couch is a huge sectional, cloth, and cream colored. I tried to warn my husband that cream color was a bad idea (even though I love the way it looks) because we have pets, but it was such a great deal that we just decided to get it. He also kept telling me "we can always get it recovered if we need to". Well, I don't think he realized that it would most likely cost thousands to have it recovered since it is so big. And we didn't know how big of a mistake the fabric was. [more inside]

Build Me Up / Bedframe Baby

We have a king-size bed (Mattress, boxsprings) that is just sitting on the floor of our bedroom, taking up a big chunk of real estate and looking sort of shabby. To free up space, I would like to move the bed into a narrow alcove-like part of the room. This means we wouldn't have room for nightstands and so need a headboard w/ shelves. For aesthetic reasons, I would like a frame to cover the sides of the boxsprings. No need for the bed to be raised, it will still rest on the floor. For money reasons, I would like suggestions on how to build such a thing myself, or recommendations for good but economical products. [more inside]
