I am going to need a bookcase in a room I am redecorating. Downstairs is a HORRIBLE 80s chipboard wall unit thing with dark, not at all convincing fakey veneer. Complication: I'm redecorating the room to a Hannibal theme. [more inside]
I have this Ikea desk combination. I sit too much and want to convert it into a height-adjustable desk, without using one of the desktop models. Can I use an adjustable frame like this? Any other feedback or tips on buying an adjustable-height desk? [more inside]
Several of the leather straps that support the seat of my Barcelona lounge chair have torn. How can I repair (or replace) them? [more inside]
I'm in need of two well built desks/workstations for my video editorial company. [more inside]
My husband and I are traveling to Sweden soon. We both love Scandinavian design and would like to visit some furniture/home decor shops while in Sweden. What are some good, not too expensive furniture shops to visit in Stockholm and Sundsvall? We're interested in both local chains (Ikea not included) and boutique shops. Is it possible to buy furniture there and have the shop ship them to the US for you? Are the shipping costs generally reasonable? Thanks!
My wife and I are visiting Japan soon and would like to visit interesting shops or design studios that specialise in uncommon and/or beautiful products, specifically for homewares, textiles and children’s toys and decor. We’re interested in contemporary design and want to get a feel for the modern Japanese aesthetic. [more inside]
I would love some advice on how to approach researching for making our new home super awesome! I'm a design newbie but would love to learn more. Long-winded question below! [more inside]
I'm getting a really nice queen-size bed in a few days and I want to outfit it with top-of-the-line, premium pillows, sheets, covers, blankets, and a world-class mattress pad. What's the best that money can buy?
My SO and I are having a good natured but heated argument about futons vs. pull-out beds. Convince one of us that one or the other is a good thing. [more inside]
Can anyone help me locate or tell me what type of chair this is? [more inside]
My workplace features some 60s/70s-ish looking sofas and chairs in a foyer, which is finally being updated. As a result, said furniture will soon be put out on the sidewalk, and I can claim it if I want to. I'm not a huge fan of the furniture per se, but am trying to figure out whether this stuff is cool retro crap that can be re-sold, or just crap. Pix here. [more inside]
What's a not-hideous way to store three or four laptops in a dining room? Plus the occasional iPad, headphones, etc. Has anyone found a decent piece of furniture for laptop storage? [more inside]
When moving this weekend, I broke my dresser (sad trombone). I tried to take the drawers out to make them easier to move, but they have these little brackets with ball bearings in them that are lubricated and make the drawer slide in the track. I tried poking around online but I can't figure out where to get new ones… or even what I'm looking for is called. [more inside]
We recently acquired this record player console from family. I had the genius idea to paint it to go with our decor more effectively... And now it looks like this. I am displeased as I feel it looks like children's furniture. Help me fix it please! [more inside]
So, I have boxes of vinyl records sitting in the bottom shelf of a built-in without much headroom. This means that every time i want to find a record, I have to pull the (heavy) boxes out onto the floor, select the record and then pull it back up onto the shelf. I would like to figure out a better way, ideally by installing a roll-out shelf (or set of shelves) for the boxes to sit on. [more inside]
So, I've seen some knitting techniques that turn pop tops from soda cans into a nice material type substance for wardrobe accessories. I've also seen a chair someone made out of those same pop tops but with zip ties holding them together instead of the knitting yarn used in fashion items. Can you help me combine the two to make an amazing and unique chair? Specifically I need ideas for what type of wire/material to use for the joining of the poptabs but any help is welcome. Is there somewhere in NYC (preferably Brooklyn) that has quality furniture with prices on par with the internet? We need to buy a bed, living room seating and a dining room set. The answer to this question is not Ikea. [more inside]
Does this exist in Austin? I'm looking for a family-owned furniture store that sells name-brand furniture for less than the name-brand store. There's a place in the Dallas suburbs that does this. They have very little inventory, but they have the catalogs for places like Ashley, La-Z-Boy, and Bassett. Customers typically look around at those stores and then go to the mom-and-pop shop to order from the catalog. If you've seen this in the Austin area (Round Rock to San Marcos), please tell me where!
I have a piece of furniture that I bought at a garage sale about 8 years ago for around $50. We need to get rid of it, but I don't know how much to sell it for. I think it's possible it's worth more than $50. [more inside]
We're putting down new wood floors in our bedroom. We've got lovely curtains, terrific bedding. And I just painted the walls a pleasant grey/purple tone. But our dresser and headboard are two different shades of cheap light-colored IKEA wooden stuff. The new floor is yet another light wood tone. Is there some kind of wash or paint treatment I can apply to my headboard and dresser that will pull them out of the light wood range and into the other colors in my palette, so that our stuff can finally match? I own this small black couch from IKEA. Primary user is my Alaskan Malamute (obligatory pic), who staked his claim on it many moons ago - it's a dog couch now. I'd like to make this couch available to him when he's in the backyard while I'm at work. How do I do this? [more inside]
I am looking for a dresser with drawers that don't stick and are nice and deep so they hold a lot of clothing. Ideally I'd like a 3-drawer Malm dresser from Ikea, but the closest one is 3 hours away and they don't deliver the Malm. Any other substitutes? [more inside]
I'm decorating for the first time. I want things to look nice and not "grad school chic". Difficulty: I hate shopping and don't have a lot of time to spend fussing with things. Where should I buy stuff and how do I find out what I like? Is there a website where I can see a beautiful living room and click to buy what I like from it? [more inside]
I created the Artemis Spaceship Bridge Sim game, and I've collected quite a bit of equipment to show it off. But finding just the right chairs for my bridge installations has been tough. Should I commission some custom ones? Is the perfect chair set out there for me already? [more inside]
I stupidly bought a piece of maple coated with something called "Durakyrl," intending to use it as the surface of a desk. Now I don't know how to get the Durakryl finish off so that I can turn this boring workbench top into furniture. Further complications inside. [more inside]
My wife has accepted a post-doc position in the University of Wisconsin system with duration of around two years. Where exactly in Wisconsin is slightly up in the air, but no matter where we end up, we have a host of questions to ask about moving there and Wisconsin life in general. Once we know where we're actually going, we may have more questions about the area, but right now I think our biggest concern is winter. [more inside]
Is there even such a thing? Student intern in northern VA needs bed and sofabed for only 3 months and furniture rentals are really expensive. She doesn't need to buy furniture because we cannot hall it across 4 states and we have no where to store it at our house. Any suggestions?
My sweetie and I are doing some big redesign stuff in our house, and I am trying to find design/furniture/decorating inspiration. I am looking specifically for blog that go beyond the minimalist look. [more inside]
Does upholstery paint really work? I have been offered a couch by a coworker. I really dig the shape of the couch, high back, lots of buttons, kinda swanky, retro looking. The color scheme looks like something from the Golden Girls though. [more inside]
Never-ending winter be damned! I want to think about outdoor furniture, but I'm basically clueless. What holds up well? Dining set-up or lounge? Specific recommendations appreciated! [more inside]
I need a nice folding ladder that can be used in a library with nine-foot ceilings. I don't think we have the room or the budget for one with rails. Everything I see is short, metal, or ugly. Where can I find a nice ladder that can fold up, doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and looks okay in a library.
I want to paint this. For various reasons, stripping it first is out. How to get the best paint job? [more inside]
I'm planning to get some cheap/free used furniture from family/friends, thrift stores and maybe craiglist. I don't know anyone who's strong enough to carry it up to a second story apartment (no elevator). How do I find someone to do this that isn't a full-service moving company? [more inside]
My friend bought this chair at a vintage store in town. The salesperson did not have any information about its history or style. Does anyone here know the name of this chair or know the period that is comes from? Any information about it would be much appreciated.
Crate & Barrel has this modular shelving unit/desk hybrid which would be perfect for my needs, except the shelving unit doesn't actually hold very much. I thought IKEA had something similar but they don't really (their desk sticks out at a 90 degree angle from the shelves). Do you know of anyone who sells a shelving system like this (with a desk option) that will actually hold books. Thanks!
We have a couch we bought at a large reputable furniture store for about $600-700, about five years ago. It is so sunken at this point that it is difficult to get up out of. Help! [more inside]
Can anyone identify either the specific name of the chair or the furniture style (if there was one) that 1955 Playmate Marguerite Empey/Dianne Webber is sitting in in this photo [NSFWish: Model is nude but you can't see anything would wouldn't see at a US public pool.] [more inside]
We've never bought a dining room table and chairs before, and we're just not quite sure we're being thorough in our questions and inspection of the samples we've seen at the furniture store. Is there anything we need to know? Specifics inside. [more inside]

Hi, does anyone have recommendations for attractive, well-designed and relatively affordable office furniture? I am looking for something that is a step up from Stapes and Office Depot, especially for conference tables. This is for a true office, not a home office. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I have a leather computer desk chair that I got 2 years ago that I really like and they don't sell it anymore, it is very ergonomic. I have tried out other chairs and not found one as good. The leather has torn in several places and I need to reupholster it. I don't want to take it somewhere to be reupholstered becasue a) I don't have the money and B) I would have nothing to sit on while it is in the shop. The thing is I don't know anything about reupholstering , let alone what looks somewhat complicated due to all the panels, in it. I have made a video showing in detail the chair, and the problems with it. I will be very grateful to anyone who can help with with this. This is the video.
What books will show me how to fabricate stuff? The FabLab curriculum is oriented more towards digital fabrication techniques, but I'm interested more in (seemingly) simple things such as all the different types of fasteners for hanging things on walls, or how to make objects that serve a function (e.g., a lamp, or a steel-and-wood bench) look less, well, home-made. I guess what I'm asking, and have a hard time translating into a search query, is: how do I learn to make the things I want to make look more designed and less like they were a Saturday-afternoon hobby project? (which, in all fairness, they are) [more inside]
Do you have destructive dogs? Do you have beanbag chairs that have survived the attentions of your destructive dogs? Please tell me the brand and where you bought them (online shopping preferred). Alternately, general advice on which material(s) are particularly impervious to chewing and dog pee would also be appreciated. Thanks!
I think this situation is crazy, but maybe it's par for the course. [more inside]
MetalFilter: I can measure, chop, & weld. What's next? I took a class in metalworking (metal furniture fabrication) and came out of it with some cool projects: a frame for hanging an art print, a metal storage crate, a sculpture that spins. I'd like to take the class again (mostly for open access to the metal shop). But before I do, I'd like to go in with more direction, a bigger vocabulary, and plans for what I want to build. I have no previous mechanical / shop experience, so it's all still pretty new to me. But here's what I'd like to know more about: [more inside]
I plan to take up a new hobby: making furniture from reclaimed wood and metals. What should I read? What materials do I need? What should I know? [more inside]
