I would like to to like to buy some IKEA-style furniture, and I'm willing to pay a premium of around £60-£100 so that I don't have to build it myself. But I can't find any way to buy any! Surely this must be possible? [more inside]
I used Minwax polyurethane (oil-based) to refinish a hardwood floor. It's been a day and still is a bit tacky. I understand that I should wait until the floor completely dries to move furniture back in, but I don't have anywhere else comfortable to sleep and I am getting antsy (it is my bedroom/workroom!) Any ways to speed up the drying process? Maybe I could use an electric ceramic heater - or is that dangerous? Or maybe a fan? How stupid of an idea would it be to move some of the furniture back in (in particularly my workstation) approximately 24 hours after the finish has been applied? [more inside]
A family member with ongoing back and neck issues finds monthly massages from a masseuse quite effective at maintaining their functionality. Recently, they tried a demo of one of the high-end "robotic" massage chairs (Panasonic MA-70) at a trade fair and were quite impressed with it. Has anyone had experience with owning and using one of these chairs over a longer period of time? If so, what are your recommendations? [more inside]

As an addendum to my previous question, I am now looking for some good furniture choices in the Toronto downtown area (central York, near Davisville Avenue to be specific). It is important that it is good quality / relatively cheap and that the place delivers it to the apartment for a nominal fee. I'd rather buy new stuff because I'm a little uncomfortable with getting used furniture. Any suggestions/advice? [more inside]
What I'm search for may not exist. We have recently purchased a new metal-framed coffee-table with legs that taper down to ~1/2" at the floor. With the legs being so slender, they are creating little holes in the pile of the rug that they rest on. I'm looking for something like this, but perhaps only 1/2" wide so they aren't so obvious in the middle of the living room. The smallest I've been able to find is about 3X that size. Thoughts? I'm aware of the stick-on rubber/felt pads that are available and may need to go in that direction, but thought I'd see if anybody has some other ideas like above. thank you.
Boston-area Mefites: share your wisdom! We are looking to furnish our Medford, MA, apartment. We'd like to shop at Ikea. The problem is, we don't drive (we aren't legally qualified, so Zipcar doesn't help). Ikea will deliver from the store, which is great but leaves one problem: How do we get to and from the store? Any advice helpful; more details inside. [more inside]
Hi hivemind. I'm in Northern California and stumped. I decked out my lovely, elderly parents' place, but foolishly bought stylish soft couches/chairs with no arm rests. I now need firm couches and sturdy chairs before either of them has a fall because of balance/knee issues. But when I google, I often find articles about how important the right furniture is, but one one site that offers a selection of furniture options for seniors. Or I find sites that seem to sell such furniture in bulk, to senior living facilities (and often don't list prices without starting a business account). I'm wondering if I'm just looking in the wrong place, and if so, where should I look? Or, have you bought great furniture for someone with limited mobility? Where did you look? What do you like? Thanks!
I'd like to acquire some sort of family computer desk or table. Ideally, it would be something like this so-called mega desk from Pottery Barn, but actually designed with computers in mind (i.e., space to hold CPUs, cable management, etc). We need space for at least 2 desktops with large-ish monitors and space for a laptop. Any bright ideas? [more inside]
When I moved into my apartment, the previous tenant left behind his kid's twin bed, which has been sitting in a corner covered with books for the last year. I want to finally get rid of it (on Craigslist or similar) but I have no idea what the asking price should be. Details inside. [more inside]
We just bought a house and got a new couch about 4 months ago. The couch is a huge sectional, cloth, and cream colored. I tried to warn my husband that cream color was a bad idea (even though I love the way it looks) because we have pets, but it was such a great deal that we just decided to get it. He also kept telling me "we can always get it recovered if we need to". Well, I don't think he realized that it would most likely cost thousands to have it recovered since it is so big. And we didn't know how big of a mistake the fabric was. [more inside]
I bought an interesting small chair at a local thrift store. Here's a picture of the front. [more inside]
I have a couple of perspex chairs I'm going to get rid of. I wouldn't have thought they were worth anything but someone mentioned a few years ago that he thought we could get a bit of money for them. They're not going to make me my fortune but I'm wondering how best to price them; like, in the $5 range or in the $25 range? Any ideas? Photo inside. [more inside]
This is a long shot, but I have a chair at work that is extremely comfortable and I would like to buy the same chair for my desk at home. Does anyone recognize this chair and know the brand/model name? Alternatively, where might I be able to find a logo or identifying mark on a chair? (I haven't been able to find one so far, but I may not be looking in the right places on the chair.) [more inside]
Are there any worthwhile modern-ish furniture spots in San Diego? I'm a fan of HD Buttercup's stuff up in LA but would like something local.
We have a king-size bed (Mattress, boxsprings) that is just sitting on the floor of our bedroom, taking up a big chunk of real estate and looking sort of shabby. To free up space, I would like to move the bed into a narrow alcove-like part of the room. This means we wouldn't have room for nightstands and so need a headboard w/ shelves. For aesthetic reasons, I would like a frame to cover the sides of the boxsprings. No need for the bed to be raised, it will still rest on the floor. For money reasons, I would like suggestions on how to build such a thing myself, or recommendations for good but economical products. [more inside]
After years of back problems, I am seeking a chair that I can actually sit in comfortably. I am looking at the Gravity Balans, but it costs a small fortune. However, I am desperate. Does anyone have any experience with this chair and is it worth it? Any suggestions for alternatives? [more inside]
We have off-white furniture (sofa/dining chairs, recliners) and two black cats (with claws). You can see where this is going. I'm looking for slipcovers that will match the decor, will stand up to cat hair, incidental claw marks, occasional food spills and tracked-in dirt, and can be thrown in the wash. [more inside]

I'm moving to an apartment later this summer, and I need to get furniture for it (starting from nothing). I really like a particular kind of furniture: severe, simple, anonymous, functional. Think of the Lehni Bed 1, beautiful but bare Shaker woodworking, Donald Judd's standing writing desk, Aalto's Paimio chair, and so on. All of this stuff is crushingly beyond-super-expensive. I'd love to get suggestions for alternatives, cheaper things in that style from major retailers, craftspeople who make pieces like these, and, in general, furniture along those lines that you don't have to buy from Switzerland for a million skillion dollars -- stuff that's well made but with adult-reasonable prices. (It would be great if this was available in the New York City area, as well, but I welcome answers beyond that, to make this question useful to people elsewhere with similar interests.) Thanks!
We are getting a new patio soon (woo hoo) and are looking at furniture. We are in favor of using recycled materials, and we are not good at staining/storing our outdoor stuff. Someone told us about polywood (which is made from old milk jugs?) and it looks pretty sharp. All of the polywood sales sites promise 20-year or longer warranties, say that no maintenance is required, and promise that the stuff is basically weatherproof. But I'm skeptical. So, does anyone have polywood furniture? Does it perform as advertised? Is it comfy? Does it look nice? Are there any brands that are clearly better than others?
Looking to offload (donate/sell/giveaway) some furniture in Berkeley CA this week, but don't know what's the best route. We need help! [more inside]
I need to buy a couch, and for it to be comfy, decent-looking, relatively inexpensive, and bedbug free. I have an idea of the dimensions that my place can accomodate, but almost nothing else. Right now, I don't even know, what I don't know. How do?! [more inside]
I want to get rid of my furniture and I'm trying to figure out the best way to dump the stuff that maybe helps someone else. What Philadelphia-area charity would be interested in these things? Alternatively, how does one sell or give away things like this as a unit and is doing so more trouble than it is worth? [more inside]
It's hard to be comfortable in a dwelling with no couch. You try to watch TV with a friend and you're sitting on the floor and it's just lame. However, I live in an apartment where the front door opens onto a narrow stairway that goes up at a right angle. I had a couch when I moved in, and the moving guys tried every possible angle but they just couldn't get in into the apt. It's on the third floor -- can't get it into a window, wouldn't fit through anyway. [more inside]

I've got a black IKEA Expedit bookcase that I've used as a surface the last two years or so, and it shows. I rent a bedroom in a shared house, and my bed belongs to the room. It sucks and I need a new one. It's a double, but I have room to go bigger if it's not a big price upgrade. The new mattress should be fairly firm, but thick enough and squishy enough that I can lie on my side comfortably. The bedframe can be very minimal, but it should also be high, a meter or more elevated for storage purposes. It must not wobble. [more inside]
I am furnishing a small studio apartment. I live two blocks away from a Restoration Hardware showroom. I like this $129 chair there. Restoration Hardware will not sell me a floor sample and they will not ship to store. The fixed home delivery charge is $125 whether you're buying 8 chairs or just one. I just need one. Find me a suitable replacement that will cost less than $250 all told. [more inside]
We are considering the purchase of a set of patio furniture made of "all weather resin wicker" aka "PE Wicker". The stuff is pricey and I have concerns as to it's durability. Do you own outdoor furniture made from this product? How long have you had it? Has it held up well? Would you buy it again? Any tips as to upkeep/maintenance?
What is this chair? My wife, a huge fan of design magazines, doesn't recognize it. She thinks it might be handmade, but it looks too industrial for that. No marks on the chair, either. What is it?

We're moving into a 38' RV in the next month and getting rid of our three bedroom apartment. We're trying not to put too much in storage so the vast majority of stuff has to go. I'm getting overwhelmed and I'm not sure of the best way to go about this. [more inside]
Where do you go when you've graduated from IKEA and are ready for decent, but not necessarily heirloom quality furniture? We're just hoping to find some stuff to carry us through the next 8-10 years, or is that unrealistic? How much should we honestly expect to spend? [more inside]

I have a table that I bought from IKEA which is a bit like this: http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/S29806818/ and the problem I have is that while the screen on the table is fine, the keyboard which is right in front of it seems to me to be too high for my arms. So I was wondering if it is possible to install that sliding part you find in computer tables like this one: http://img.weiku.com/waterpicture/2011/10/25/0/office_furniture_computer_table_634592490678635461_1.jpg and what that part is called anyway? Thanks! [more inside]
We are making a rare trip to IKEA tomorrow in part to get a table and chairs for our one-year old. What are other IKEA items that we should look at for him? [more inside]
I found this coffee table on Craigslist for $15. While structurally it's pretty sound, the previous owners painted it; it looks like they may have just spray painted the poor thing without a drop of primer or sealant, because the top is chipping (see photos). Not ever one to leave passable alone, I decided that I had to repaint it. I've read as many furniture painting tutorials as I could get my hands on - the best seemed to be DIY on the Cheap, Young House Love, Centsational Girl, and Mouse House - and I still have a few questions for you guys. I ordered a 2-piece sectional sofa 15 weeks ago, and it was supposed to be delivered in 8-10 weeks. Half of it was delivered at 8 weeks, the other half is still missing. I just bought a farm table that the previous owner had in a NYC apt that got hot and cold with vicious radiator heat. It's got some warping and cracking, but it's still beautiful and I'd like to do everything I can to prevent it from getting further damaged over time. I thought I'd just give it a good coat of linseed oil, but the surface is very lightly stained, and I read elsewhere that linseed oil is meant for naked wood. Any suggestions on how to treat my new baby? Thank you!
We are moving into our first flat! Hooray! However, it is unfurnished, so we need to buy us some furniture - specifically, a good sofa and a good dining/gaming table. If we go Ikea, what's the sweet spot between price and durability? [more inside]
The husbot and I really wanted this media console from CB2 for our new TV and electronic whatnots. It was in stock and ready to ship the other day, but now it's listed as "Estimated in mid-March." Knowing how backorders go, it could be sooner or later than that, or just never materialize at all. Can you help us find something similar that is available now? [more inside]
