Modern Japanese design shops & studios

My wife and I are visiting Japan soon and would like to visit interesting shops or design studios that specialise in uncommon and/or beautiful products, specifically for homewares, textiles and children’s toys and decor. We’re interested in contemporary design and want to get a feel for the modern Japanese aesthetic. [more inside]

Will my vintage couch bug me?

Is good-quality (not obtained from Freecycle or off the street) used furniture, from a reputable dealer, still a high (or high enough) risk for bedbugs? [more inside]

Does the foam padding in most vintage furniture contain flame retardants?

How long have furniture manufacturers been dousing foam padding with chemical flame retardants? My husband and I would like to start a family in the near future and we're trying to eliminate and replace our PBDE-saturated furniture in order to create a safer environment for baby. All the new organic/ natural latex padded furniture we've found is way out of our price range, so I'm wondering if vintage finds (sans lead paint) might be another safe alternative?

Half remembered furniture

Does anybody know the term to describe this particular style of vintage kitchen/dining room hutch? It came in many forms but was generally made from a blonde, plainly figured wood and had bright red accents. I remember seeing examples in nearly every Toronto junk shop was ever in. [more inside]

If you see one of these chairs, BUY IT, they are the best.

I have access to the best chairs in the world, but so far as I know there are only four of them. Can anyone help me find more of these fabulous springy outdoor chairs, probably from the mid-20th century? Details inside. [more inside]

Antiquing means so many different things

I need an antique (or sufficiently vintage-y-antiqu-y styled) trunk for my living room. Problem: every piece I've seen to has been too big, too worn, too ugly, or too expensive. Where would I find stores/markets/fairs/dealers in the NYC metro area that might carry such trunks? I got a zipcar, so I can tool around the tri-state area. Insanely detailed requirements follow. old-school lawn chair please?

where can I find old-school lawn chairs? I want the folding aluminum ones with interwoven webbing seats- like your Grandpa had. New, used, online or brick and mortar (Northeast USA) are all options. Here is a refurbished example of what I'm looking for, although I'd prefer ones with the original glorious bright clashing colors.
