I've got a black IKEA Expedit bookcase that I've used as a surface the last two years or so, and it shows. For various reasons, I can't really move it from where it is right now (it's part of some custom built in furniture). How can I repaint or restain this thing to look a little better?

We are making a rare trip to IKEA tomorrow in part to get a table and chairs for our one-year old. What are other IKEA items that we should look at for him?

We are moving into our first flat! Hooray! However, it is unfurnished, so we need to buy us some furniture - specifically, a good sofa and a good dining/gaming table. If we go Ikea, what's the sweet spot between price and durability?

I just bought the
Karlstad chair from IKEA. It's slightly defective and I'm wondering how bad it would be if I overlooked this particular defect and went ahead with putting it together anyway.

I am planning a road trip to Ikea (Denver -> Draper, UT). Some friends are saying I should fly to Salt Lake then rent a truck to haul the stuff back. Some friends are saying I should drive out using my SUV. Help me make the right decision.

How long does it take a couch to stop offgassing? I assembled a new Ikea
Karlstad sofa
five days ago, and while the odor has decreased a bit, it still smells. Worse, there's some VOC that irritates my nose and throat after I sit on it for half an hour or so, which is rather worrying. (My wife gets the same 'acrid feeling' too.)

The
Ikea Klippan sofa is a popular model according to Google and is comfy enough to sit on at the store, but does anyone have any ideas regarding its total lack of head support? I'm thinking I need to add some kind of head rest, like a body pillow held in place with a giant piece of fabric wrapping around it and stapled in the back. This seems like one of those things that somebody somewhere must have figured out already (besides get rid of it). Any ideas?

How to identify IKEA furniture?
I have an
identical sofa bed to the one on sale here and also
here. I want to get a new cover for it but I can't for the life of me remember the model name. So does anyone know what the bed is called or how I can find out. Many thanks.

Tomorrow, we are returning to Ikea for the first time in nearly a decade. Though we were not pleased with the quality of items purchased on our last visit, cost was and is still the overriding factor. We intend to avoid particleboard items for anything that will bear a significant load. What places would you recommend as alternatives? (more inside)

I've got a chance to buy an Ikea Jerker computer desk locally for a good price (the closest Ikea store is in Houston, we're in Austin). How sturdy are they? I'm used to early-80s solid-steel welded Steelcase desks, and am wondering if the Jerker will be solid enough for a 19" monitor and Mac G4 tower.
