groove me baby

What are the slowest, heaviest, funkiest grooves you can throw at me? I really love slow, heavy, syrupy, spaced-out, minimalist grooves. Whether it's funk, hip hop, hard rock, jam rock, glam rock, whatever - some songs just settle in your gut. Know what I'm talking about?

(Here's what I'm talking about: Thank You For Talking to Me Africa, Respect, Fame, Mustang Sally, In The Raw. I especially like it when the bass does that octave jump thing.)

Funky Auld Medina

A few years ago, I remember grooving on a funky version of Auld Lang Syne. It was by a male artist, vocals plus either solo guitar or guitar driven. It was in a folk-reggae style similar to I’m Yours by Jason Mraz. Ring any bells?

More fun in Montreal

What's fun and funky in Montreal next weekend? Going to Montreal next weekend (1-4 Jan) and I'm looking for fun and funky stuff to do there. What my friend and I like:

ethnic food (really authentic)
interesting local food
cool design - shops, museums
indie bands
punk/electronic bands
good DJs/dancing
interesting people
international stuff
art
really amazing croissants and coffee

Is there a free paper/guide for Montreal that I can pick up or see online? Any recommended listings for the kinds of things we are looking for? Is there a good neighborhood to stay in to be close to the kinds of places we will like? Any must-see for us?

Thanks!

Get on up...and tell me where the bass is at.

I'm in need of some seriously funky bass. Who or what is your favorite song/band/album that's mainly driven by melodic bass? Think Bootsie, Larry Graham, Infectious Grooves, Parliament. Think virtuoso, all over the place, like your eyes bug out when you hear it. Any style, any musician, any song - especially artists who don't usually get down like that.

Guitar solos 101

I have been teaching myself guitar over the past few years and I still don't understand how to structure and play a guitar solo. Let's say I am playing a simple blues progression (I-IV-V) ...I have taught myself the blues scale... but when do I play what note? And do I need to move the scale up/down the neck in time with the progression. I want to be able to noodle an original solo... not just copy something already recorded.

Dress me up in your love

What do the hip creative girls wear to work? I may soon be taking on a project in a creative role in Manhattan. And... help me, I have no idea what to wear into the office every day! I haven't had a Manhattan job in eons, all of my suits are out of style, don't fit me, and are anyway a little too... well... bland for this kind of thing anyhow. This is definitely not a suit-and-tie kind of gig.

If this project is going to happen, I need to build a new wardrobe. Then again, I'm a little poor right now and can't afford an all-out shopping spree to Nordstrom, so I need to invest wisely.

I watch What Not to Wear and I've gleaned from it a vague idea of how to put together an outfit... but I don't really know what basic pieces I need, or where to buy them. I don't know how to get from one or two outfits to dressed well every day. Help, help!

I'm a 33-year-old writer in video games and new media marketing. I want to look put together, but still a little edgy; not like somebody's mom, you know? That said, I do have two little kids, so dry-clean-only and navel-baring are both right out. I'm average height but short-waisted so I love petite sizing; hippy and busty with a well-defined waist. If I were trying to be a model I'd need to lose about twenty pounds but for a normal human being I'm OK. :) Though all of these empire-waisted tops, they make me look pregnant, and I will be glad when they are gone.

So where do I go, and what do I buy there?

Does this bus go to Du-lut? Visiting Duluth, MN

Visiting Duluth, MN. Any ideas for someplace unique to visit? I'm spending the day in Duluth on my way to visit relatives, and I'm interested in finding some restaurant, art museum, movie palace, coffee shop that is unique to Duluth, some local spot with a lot of personality. I already enjoy Sven and Ole's in Grand Marais and Tobies' in Hinkley, and am looking for something with similar cache, though it doesn't have to be food related.

(Title line is first half of a groaner of a joke my father tells: "...no, it goes beep beep!" (in Norweigian accent))

Cool places to eat in or around El Paso, TX/Las Cruces, NM? Looking for fun places to eat in the area with my parents and little sister. Prefer in the $10-15/person range, no bars, vegetarian options a plus.
I want funky business cards. Help!

[BusinessCardFilter] I know that a lot of people have asked for recommendations of business cards printers online, but I want really funky geeky techy cards. Ideas? CocoPink.com is okay, but I want something with like a big scribble on it.

Recommend awesome music.

Can you recommend some really excellent music? My friend requested mix cd's for her birthday. She and her bf both have very expansive listening habits, and I want to choose tracks that are new to her and that are, well, awesome. This is why I need your help.

I would appreciate recommendations for your favorite music that is upbeat, groovy, funky, or otherwise delicious, and that falls well off the beaten path.

Typical alterna-rock, while I have nothing against it, is not what I am looking for. Electronic is good if it is melodic and danceable. Music from other countries is good. Music from previous eras is good.

Examples of some things she and I both like: Bjork. Good disco. Music that involves people singing in Hindi. Your recommendations can diverge rather wildly from these examples.

I know questions like this have been asked before, but since I am seeking something rather specific I thought it needed a new question.
