I read tons of small to medium blogs, read and listen to many independent news producers from public radio to online editions of mainstream newspapers to indy news sources, and listen to dozens of different podcasts. I have started donating directly to a few of these writers and producers, but frankly, it's impossible for me to donate to all of them. What can I do to support a sustainable economy for these nonprofits/progressive media companies/small ventures/creative projects/etc? [more inside]
Some states provide zero funding to their public radio stations (either directly or via state education funds like, to colleges) while others give a lot (last year, Georgia gave public radio almost 15-million dollars). Who decides, the legislature or the voters, whether or not to support public radio in a state?
My funding for my current project ran out. I should be fine for the upcoming fall semester, when I will be finishing and defending my dissertation. However, the summer semester is unaccounted for. I have a part-time catering gig that I can get a little bit of money with, but I'm looking for ideas for other work. Details in the extended explanation. [more inside]
I am looking for a chronology of political fights NPR has engaged in since 1967 where it and the CPB have had to defend congressional funding. I'm looking for incidents further back than the 2011 resignation of Vivian Schiller or the ascendance of conservatives leadership to the NPR board in 2008. Any help is appreciated. [more inside]
We own a lot in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood. Its value has tripled since we bought it; at this point we could sell it for $100k if we wanted to. We don't want to sell it. We want to build a 500 square foot house on it. We already paid for the permits, saved up the money, and now it's looking like we might fall $10k-$20k short on the total cost to build. Neither of us is employed. Given our extended explanation, how do we make this happen? [more inside]

Despite being an assistant professor, I do not understand the logistics of graduate students playing competing funding offers against each other. I know it happens but what is "the right thing to say"? A good friend asked me about this and I realized I was not so savvy as a grad student. What does one say? Whom does one ask? Does this really work? Is it worth trying?

Trying to fund something on GoFundMe, whose whole principle is asking people you know to fund you. Facebook friends, twitter followers, real-life friends and such. But I don't really have any of those. Not in a sad way, I just don't know many people (that issue sort of comes up in the GoFundMe). So how do I get the word out? Any ideas? [more inside]

Small not-for-profit health care-focused agency in Ontario, Canada wants to increase their outreach program by creating a mobile service. The problem is that funds are limited and we're confused about what our next best step could be - since none of us has done this before! I'm working on an iPad app (in the mental health/wellness space) and am self funding much of the design, but want to look into a Kickstarter or similar for the development phase. I did all the UI myself. I've mostly seen Kickstarters to fund physical design projects like pens, picture frames, etc, or albums, webseries, stuff like that. The technology section seems very hardware focused too. [more inside]
I am a criminology PhD student based in London and have been invited to present at a conference in Tampa, Florida next year. The conference is perfect for my area of research; the only thing is neither my university nor the hosting institution can provide funding to cover my travel expenses. Are there any other bodies that might be able to provide some funding?
[For folks that work in the non-profit sector] I feel at a loss for what to do. I work for a non-profit that I have been planning to leave for some time. I am taking the GRE this month, applying to schools and even applying for school-compatible part time jobs. At the same time, my non-profit is trying to pull itself out of a budget hole by applying for a multitude of grants. Most of the deliverables are things that I am supposed to deliver and the only other person left to deliver would be my immediate supervisor. I like my supervisor and don't know how she would even get all the work done if I left. My work would not be easily transferred to a new hire. I feel overcome with guilt as each new grant proposal goes out the door because I'm not planning on being around to do this work. I know it would be really dumb to say that before I have an offer in hand for school or a new job. What is the right thing to do? Should I let them build their plans around me when I'm not sure I'll be around? [more inside]
I get a lot of books at the library. A LOT. For a while, it was 30-40 new ones/week but with overlap I'd have up to 50 out at once. With the smallest kids mostly out of picture books, I'm down to "only" having ~30 out at once, about 15-20 of which are new/week. I've always assumed it helps the library to have that much traffic because it helps show they need funding. However, I also do a lot of ILL... [more inside]

I have the reverse problem of most startups... within two years I built a solid and unique brand, with a high media profile and street cred, proven content and products, and a passionate audience of over 240,000 people and growing. But although people congratulate me daily on my success I'm literally exhausted and starving. People circle me daily wanting to "sponsor" me, but I've found most of them want to make money *off* of me, not pay me and help me grow. Fact is, I'm accepting now that I just can't do it all by myself and I don't even WANT to... but I'm a victim of my own quick success. Without a staff and resources I can't expand, grow and monetize as I *need* to in order to meet the demand. [more inside]
