Due to a series of unforeseen circumstances, we will need to spend the summer sticking close to home. We are trying to embrace our homebound summer and are having a bit of trouble finding things to do. What are your quintessential summer activities? [more inside]
I'm enjoying the breathlessly ridiculous tone and pace of Dr. McNinja, which I think does a great job of avoiding the unstoppable-force vs. unmovable-wall dynamic of mainstream superhero comics. It plays fast and loose with everything, and has a fine sense of the absurd. It is only occasionally problematic (racist, homophobic) in its juvenile sensibilities, which is way better than most of its competition. What movies, books, and comics are comparable?
Lately I've been really into the blog Ribbon Around A Bomb, who writes about female-fronted 70s post-punk, Twin Peaks, feminist art, and leather jackets. I also love The Pulp Zine, which is full of teen dreams and high school small town angst, an obsession with Burger Records, 90s nostalgia, black lipstick and pink hair. I'm looking for more blogs that cover punk, garage rock, femme fun, DIY, weirdo fashion, nostalgia, queerness, creativity, feminism, art, and worship of countercultural idols. Basically, I'm a fully-grown scummy punk boyfemme who wants the experience of flipping through a teen magazine tailored to my interests. What other sites would I love? [more inside]
My girlfriend is currently 3000 miles away for the next 2 months and neither of us are naturally that talkative so our skype chats tend to just peter out at the end, when we would both like to spend more time together. We are looking for suggestions for 2 player games or activities we can play/do together online or over skype while we are chatting. ios or online games only (we don't have gaming computers with fancy gfx cards). Ideally things that are easy to understand and accessible for non-gamers but deep enough they will keep our interest over several play sessions.
Hey, could anyone show me where to find the book called "How to make money in your spare time" by 673126? The case is yours Detective Hive Mind!

I have to give a presentation to about 15 new hires tomorrow sometime around 10am. The start time is always variable by about 15 mins. I do this all the time and it is quite a fun presentation. The orientation at my company is super goofy and fun and the person coordinating it is totally down for some fun. So much so that my coworker Kim has pulled HR into a ongoing prank war that Kim and I are in. I have no idea what Kim is going to pull but something is going to go down. She already roped in every single one of them to come find me and make me do ridiculous things as part of the scavenger hunt. I need a way to get all these people involved and turn it into complete laughter, embarrassment, and glee for everyone. [more inside]
Are there any Prius C owners out there? Will I like having a Prius C? I'm considering buying a 2013 Prius C Three or Four in the next few weeks. I test drove one the other day and really liked it. I'm going to do another test drive on the highway to see how it feels. My goal is to make a purchase that last week of December. [more inside]
In our house, we frequently spend evenings hanging out and doing low-key group activities, like playing video games (or D&D), watching TV, or just talking and listening to music. Frequently, we find ourselves at a lull, seeking something new to do when we don't feel like putting on Netflix. I'm looking for games that we can set up, teach people, and play quickly with a varying number of people at varying levels of sobriety. (more inside) [more inside]
Been checking out Pharrell's 24 Hours of Happy and some of the people don't seem to care what they look like and totally go with it and have fun. Others are decidedly apprehensive. I would probably not even volunteer to do this sort of thing myself. For those of you who can dance like nobody's watching, or do or say something funny that might grab the attention of the room, or sing karaoke at a bar, etc, I am curious to know what goes on in your head before, during, or after you "perform." Other ways to phrase this question: What makes you a ham? Do you think about what you are doing or going to do, or just go with it? Why don't you get embarrassed when you do something fun and crazy? Or do you? What is the payoff for you? Were you born this way or did you learn it somehow?

Two wonderful people - a Salvadoran and a Russian, both living in New York - just got married and have invited my girlfriend and me to join them on vacation in El Salvador this December. Carlos is very sweet, very generous, and very excited to show us his country of origin. It all sounds wonderful to me - beach, mountains, pupusas, family, etc. Plus monkeys! My girlfriend is also very fond of the couple and loves the idea of a tropical vacation, but is typically more cautious than I am and is concerned about safety. This seems to be a valid concern, given the overall crime rate, State Department travel warnings, and so on. El Salvador has a murder rate of 69 per 100,000 people, which is about the same as Flint, Michigan and twice that of Baltimore. I'm a fairly experienced traveler and am inclined to think we'd be safe as long as we stuck with Carlos and his family, but don't want to be foolish. Neither of us speaks Spanish terribly well and we could probably be identified as foreigners by our appearance. The same can be said for Carlos' wife. G/f and I decided to turn to the fine folks of MetaFilter for outside perspectives - thoughts, anecdotes, information, or advice - on the safety and advisability of traveling to El Salvador for fun. Thank you!

I am thinking of taking a Monday - Friday trip to Vancouver at the end of this month. Looking for personal suggestions of good places to stay and fun things to do. (Boat trips, museums, nice restaurants, etc.) My personal trip ritual (if available) is to have a good bookstore near a good coffeehouse as home base.
I remember a site where you load it up and it says something simple, like "I like tea". And then you click tea and it expands so it says "I like really good tea." And then you can click other words, over and over, until there's finally a whole paragraph. Love the site. Can't remember where it is. Can anyone remember?

I saw the coolest little foursquare toy, kind of a portable mini-court, yesterday at the park. I wish I'd stopped and talked to the guys playing with it, but I thought I could find it pretty easily... but not so. So there's a little trampoline, I guess that's about two feet square, with a circular wall around it divided into four sections. They had a ball smaller than a kickball but bigger than a tennis ball, and if they hit it on the trampoline and it went between one person's section of the bordering wall, then it was like it had hit their square. Does anybody know what this? I must have one. Immediately.
I'll be in Montreal and Longueuil, Quebec, Canada for two weeks. What budget-friendly things should I do there? [more inside]
I'm taking my daughter to NYC for her 13th bday gift around the end of June. She is going to be so excited!! I'm trying to plan some great things for a Mom and a 13 yr old to do but I'm getting overwhelmed.... We will do a broadway show for sure...but any other suggestions? Help me decide what is really cool and worth doing and what would be just "meh". She loves the arts and creating and cooking and falls on the nerdy, quirky, funny side of life. She's perfect!! We will be there 3 nights and 4 days. Staying in SoHo but can Uber Car pretty much anywhere. I also have a very dear friend who lives there and will be with us to help navigate. He loves my daughter and will be up for anything but has no clue what 13 yr old girls of her ilk are into so he hasn't been much help....Thanks all!

We've been before and have seen some of the sights (list after the break), but are looking for things we might have missed, awesome places we haven't eaten at, great things we haven't seen, etc, so we can make the most of it. Only limiting factor: neither of us drive. [more inside]

I've been reading a lot of bleak books lately, often with antiheroes. Now I would like the opposite of that. I don't mind if some bad things happen, of course, or if there's conflict - usually that's kind of necessary for a good story. But I would like it if at least one of the main characters were someone I would want to be friends with. And if some of the stuff that they do or that happens in their lives makes me smile. My girlfriend told me that recently she has become sad and preoccupied with death. She often finds her mind drifting and starts to ruminate about her life stresses and sometimes death. Please reccomend novels to spark a love of reading and hopefully give her a distraction for when these bouts of worry surface. Preferably novels that are fun, with plots to get lost in or carried away with, and not too heavy or serious. [more inside]

Every once in a while, I find myself alone and bored with nothing to do. Normally I have plenty of friends and an active social life, but in times like right now, for instance, when I'm away from home visiting family, and everyone I know in this city is out of town for the holidays, and lots of things like dance classes are closed for the holidays, I don't know what to do with myself.
