The workers renovating the unoccupied twin (semi-attached) house adjoining ours have been using various solvents of unknown origin. Whatever they are, the smell is terrible. I peeked through the windows of the house and it looks like they might be sealing the floors with polyeurothane. They're not ventilating the house and they close all the windows at night. Due to health concerns we have left the house and are staying at a hotel for the night. I would like to know what risks, if any, there exist from these kinds of fumes, what I can do to resolve this, and whether it's at all possible to get some kind of compensation from the house's owner.

I accidentally melted a plastic ladle on my cooktop this morning. It smoked profusely and the fumes smelled horrible. How concerned should I be about toxicity? All windows are currently open, but there's still a lingering odor. I did call the poison control center, and the operator told me that 1) yes, the fumes could be toxic, and 2) in the absence of symptoms, just air out the house. Does the hive mind have anything to add?

I fried my clothes in a dryer at the laundromat that was way, way too hot. Besides everything being shrunken, some of the paint stuff from screenprinted T-shirts seems to have melted a little and everything stinks, almost like melted plastic. Is this dangerous? Am I inhaling toxic fumes from my sheets and might I be dead by morning?

High-efficiency gas furnace installed where previously there was mid-efficiency. So it vents straight out the wall while the old furnace used the chimney. The vent is right next to the sandbox. How bad is this?

Whatever happened to people emitting enough toxic fumes from their bodies to clear an operating or emergency room? I remember seeing news reports on this multiple times in the 1990s, but haven't heard anything since.

Upstairs neighbors had hardwood floors installed. I think they've gone on vacation while the installers did their work (stage 1 was Monday, stage 2, yesterday). The paint-fume smell in our condo is awful. What kind of health risks are there to ourselves or our cat?

My boss has decided to repaint the interior of our office building, which is nice. However, she is having it done during office hours - I'm 10 weeks pregnant, we have someone with allergies and someone with asthma. Is this odd? Isn't this usually done outside of office hours so we don't have to sniff paint fumes for 8 hours?
