I want my own FTP server (dammit).

I want my own FTP server. Looking for advice on possible solutions. Some requirements:

a) I need to be able to create users and give them different levels of access. Each user has his own private upload area, but he also has access to specific other areas that I've given multipe users access to. So if you're a user, you have your own private (except from me) upload area, and then you also have access to upload areas for certain groups. You may have read-only access in some cases.

b) I need to be able to map a directory from my own domain to it.

c) Some directories within it need to be viewable via a web browser, so that stuff can be uploaded directly to a staging area, and then viewed in a browser.

d) Some say the FTP is a dinosaur. I am not opposed to similar solutions with other protocols. But at the end of the day, I need something that allows people with low to mid level technical knowledge to upload and download files in an environment that I control. I am not afraid of using the command line stuff myself, but my users have to be able to do everything with a GUI.

e) I am willing to consider solutions that are already hosted, and I'm also willing to consider solutions that I have to install myself... but then I would have to also find the right place to host them. My site is hosted on Dreamhost, where I do have FTP access, but not at the level of customizability described above.

Happy to answer any questions. Thanks!

Looking for FTP server software with an HTTP interface.

I'm looking for FTP server software that, in addition to standard features like email notification and user management, can serve files to a web page rather than a ratty looking list of filenames in a browser window. If you have any experience with such a beast, I'd appreciate your recommendations. I need FTP capability (upload and download) from my server. I'd like the FTP server to notify me when files are uploaded to, or downloaded from the server. I'd like the server to home-folder the users so that they only see files located in their home folder. All of these are standard features in any reasonable FTP server software app. But...
This is a customer-facing interface for a sound studio. Some clients use FTP client software to connect, but most don't - they're using IE (I know, but FTP is often closed off to firewalls).

So, the IE interface for FTP is awful. I want a nice looking interface with some file management capability for the client - they should be able to control this interface - sort the list, etc - and manage these files through the browser. And it should support HTTP as a transfer method, along with FTP.

This will run on a Windows 2003 server.

If you have any recommendations for this kind of software I'd appreciate any direction you can offer.

Thanks!

WTF FTP?

WTF FTP Server? I just set up an FTP server on my machine. I opened the ports and set up my network connection to let the FTP server through. I got my home machine talking through the FTP client after some trial and error, and the only way I can connect to it is through my home computer using an FTP client, not actually OUTSIDE the house like I need.

Hmm. What am I doing wrong?

I'm using Filezilla, Filezilla Server Client, and ports 51000 thru 52000. I am using a dyndns.org forwarding address to update my IP.

I cannot get any other computer to connect, not even my wife's machine in the next room. Help? Tips? Tricks? Something I haven't considered? I checked the Filezilla WIKI, I have everything connected as per the instructions and various help pages across the series of tubes.

Help? I wanna FTP!
