Cheaper alternatives to Adobe Contribute?

What is the best way for someone without HTML knowledge (and no wish to learn) to make simple edits to an existing website? We used to use Adobe Contribute -- are there cheaper alternatives? I do computer support for a small not-for-profit which has recently moved premises. That meant losing access to the landlord's group licences for software.

Our part-time administrator has been happily using Macromedia (now Adobe) Contribute to update the website with news etc. It supplied a simple way to make updates to ordinary content with no HTML or FTP knowledge. Are there free or cheap programs to do roughly the same thing, for a simple already-existing website?

FTP Synchronise

How do I do a one-click ftp synchronisation and server restart - using only free software? Here is my situation - I am using eclipse to develop a django application, that is hosted on webfaction. Whenever I do a change and I want to test it on the server, I need to

1. Open my FTP client
2. Select the items or folders that have changed
3. Upload them
4. Open ssh and login
5. Navigate to my apache directory and restart it

Ideally, I would like to just push a button, wait a couple of minutes and everything is online. My idea at the moment is to install cygwin locally, and write some type of shell script that would do this for me - would this work, and if so, how would I do this?

I tried installing the ftp synchronisation plugin for eclipse, but it seems to have disappeared.

Is there any more clever way to solve this problem that I don't know of?

(I'm using Windows XP, by the way...)

How to get read/write when accessing anonymous FTP with OS X?

Trying to access a read/write anonymous FTP on OS X but it only gives me read access... I've set up an Ubuntu machine with an anonymous FTP (vsftpd). Other Ubuntu and Windows machines can log into it fine, and both up/download files. OS X only lets me access as read only. I click Go -> Connect to server, and then type ftp://192.168.1.13 (the local address). Am I doing something wrong? Is there a specific way of telling OS X to log in anonymously (I suspect it's logging in with my username).

Looking for an FTP server that can auto-mirror new content to secondary server.

Can anyone recommend a Windows-based FTP server that will automatically mirror (copy, replicate, whatever) files uploaded to it to a back-up server? Say user "X" uploads foo.jpg, I want the FTP program to log into my back-up server's FTP site and automatically upload the image as soon as it's done uploading, if you follow me. Any ideas? Cheaper's better, and I'd like it to work in real-time if possible. I remember seeing a server like this years ago but I can't remember what it was called, and the one I was using doesn't work in Server 2003. Any help is appreciated!
Just like the neighbor's cat in your kids' sandbox...

What am I doing to my links pointing to images in a private directory that prevents me from seeing the pics in Dreamweaver CS3 Design mode? Searching Adobe's Knowlegebase and Google yields a flood of others' issues with setting up passworded sites or Dreamweaver forgetting FTP login info and I can't narrow the results to the problem I'm having.

I just started building a web site and I'm rusty in HTML and am learning CSS. After I edit the code, I do like to check it out in Design view. Currently, I'm uploading things to a private directory (passworded .htaccess on a Zeus server not managed by me) so my business partner can see pages before the site goes "live." Viewing the site through a browser, one is prompted to enter the name and password to see this directory's content. No problems there. I have no troubles with file management in DW's FTP prog or in FileZilla, either.

Suppose the page I'm working on is located at http://www.[mydumbsite].com/public_html/sandbox/mydumbpage.htm . "Sandbox" is the passworded directory. My stylesheet for CSS is located in the same directory and the page refers directly to mydumbstylesheet.css . The pics reside below "sandbox" in folders "dumbimages" and "dumbimages/dumbthumbs." The stylesheet's effects on my .html pages show up in Design mode. The images do not. When it's all said and done, the images ARE there on the site and appear in the final product. I would just like to know what I'm doing or not doing that keeps me from being able to preview.

How do I refer to the image locations the short way (vs. "http://www.[mydumbsite].com/public_html/sandbox/images/dumbpic.jpg") so DW is not blocked access? Or Is there a way to tell DW to prompt me to get into pw'd dirs in preview mode?

Any other methods/advice (other than "OMG don't use THAT program, I write code with Sith blood on tree bark") are welcome.

Thanks!

Back me up, Scotty!

Recommend a good tool to remotely backup/synchronize large folders to my home NAS. Here's what I have:

- Laptop with 100+ GB music library; misc documents, photos, and other data that needs backed up
- Netgear ReadyNAS Duo 750GB at home (supports pretty much everything - rsync, (S)FTP, WebDAV, etc)

Here's what I want to do:

For my MP3 library (100GB, 20k files, 4k folders) - mirror or synchronize any changes from my laptop (remote at work) to my home NAS. I've tried a TON of apps already with varying degrees of success. The major problem seems to be that to do a mirror, the apps have to perform a full "audit" scan of the destination (NAS) share to see what needs updated/copied. Problem is, with 20k files, that takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r, at least using FTP or WebDAV.

Ideally, I'd like a real-time backup app that monitors some selected folders (like My Music) and kicks off an automated upload for any changed files. This (a) makes it fully automatic and (b) [in theory] faster - doesn't have to synch each time, just upload based off a good known synch. Problem is, I've yet to find the right tool to accomplish all these things correctly.

Note: I'd be happy as a clam to use rsync, which the ReadyNAS supports, but I'm sending from a Windows client and my options are limited. I've been racking my brain trying to get DeltaCopy to work, but it keeps timing out when attempting to connect to the NAS. I have port forwarding, etc, working fine on my router, so I can't really figure out why rsync is failing.

Note 2: The ReadyNAS does have optional support for SSH and Telnet, I believe, but it involves some trickery to get working and I think it might void my warranty...

Vista FTP connection delay?

Vista FTP 15 second connection delay? From my Vista system, when I try to make an FTP connection to my server across my LAN (using the server's IP directly, no DNS involved), there's always a delay of about 15 seconds. This happens no matter what FTP program I use (I've tried 3, including the "FTP" command from the DOS box). However, when I disabled the Windows Firewall as an experiment, connection was instant. I don't want to leave the firewall turned off, for obvious reasons, so I need to figure out what I have to do to the firewall to make this work better.

I ran into this problem once before with XP, and the solution was to make a firewall rule change, but I can't remember what I did. (And I don't have that computer anymore so I can't check it.)

I did some searching on the net and found this:

"When SecureFX/AbsoluteFTP makes an outgoing connection to some FTP servers (wu.ftpd is known to have this problem, for example), the FTP server tries to authenticate a user based on auth/ident service (RFC 912, 931, and 1413) by attempting to connect to the client's machine on port 113."

"With the Windows XP SP2 firewall enabled, such packets are dropped and the FTP server continues to attempt auth/ident connections on port 113 until a timeout occurs."

"Once the ident/auth timeout occurs on the FTP server side, the FTP server will move on to normal authentication via USER and PASS."

"To resolve this time lag issue, create a port exception in the Windows firewall for port 113. Since there isn't anything listening on port 113 on the XP machine, the port exception will cause the FTP server to receive a "Connection Refused" error when the auth/ident connection attempt is made to port 113. Once the FTP server receives this error, the server will switch to normal USER and PASS authentication, significantly reducing the lag time before connection."

Which certainly sounds like exactly the problem I'm having. But I just tried this, and it didn't make any difference. Maybe I did it wrong, though, or maybe there's something else I have to do instead, or in addition. Help?

I opened up the Firewall from the control panel.
I clicked "change settings" and got a popup.
(This is "Vista Home Premium" so I got asked for admin privilege, which I granted.)
I selected the "Exceptions" tab.
I clicked "Add Port".
In the popup I entered "Auth TCP" for the name.
I entered port number 113.
I selected TCP.
I didn't mess with the scope.
I entered "OK".
I did the same for Auth UDP.
Both of my new entries show with checkmarks.
Then I hit OK on the settings popup.
I closed all windows and rebooted.

And the result? No change in behavior, no matter what FTP program I use. With the DOS box FTP, there's still a long delay before I'm asked to log in to my server.

(Note: My FTP program is listed in the "Exceptions" panel and is check-marked. But if the description above is correct, this is not a problem with my FTP program. Please do not suggest alternate FTP programs to try; I'm sure that's not the solution.)

Why on some web hosts do uploaded file changes not appear immediately? On some web hosts I've used in the past, like my university's, I can upload a changed file by FTP but not see the changes through a browser for several minutes. Clearing cache, reloading the page, even uploading a *completely* different file with the same name fails. I have to wait several minutes until the server finally believes it's a new file. I assume it is some setting on the server to conserve resources?

Something is killing my FTP!

I have some malware on my machine -- yes, I know, stupid. Prolly got it from pr0n. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 on a Gateway laptop with a Pentium 4, 3.06GHz and 480 MB of RAM. I can connect to the nets, but I can't FTP into sites (I'm a freelance web designer) with either Dreamweaver or WS-FTP, my weapons of choice. I am having a hard time getting rid of the damn malware, because when I scan my system with Spybot Search and Destroy or Bit Defender my machine shuts itself off! This seems to happen when (I think) the scanning process hits one or another of the nasties. The nasties are:
Trojan.DNSChanger.RU
Trojan.Downloader.Zlob.ABLE
Trojan.Downloader.Zlob.ABLF
Exploit.Java.Gimsh.B
Java.Trojan.Exploit.Bytverify.I
Trojan.Java.ClassLoader.D
Trojan.Java.Binny.A
Trojan.Classloader.G

Can these things futz my ability to FTP? What's my best course of action to get it back? I have work waiting to be done. I'm kicking myself in the ass, so you needn't waste time on that.

I can haz sitemap?

How can I print the directory structure of my website? I've seen this question, and mine is similar, except I would like to do it over an FTP connection, if possible.

I work on the web team for a small, liberal-arts college. Our site has gotten unmanageably large, and we would like to create an *actual* sitemap (we have a sitemap, but the actual server has much much more than it technically should). I've considered just FTPing the whole site to a local machine, and running the dos TREE command, but it doesn't sort alphabetically, and we're talking about FTPing a LOT of stuff (like, it would take a day or so to do the transfer).

The site is running on IIS6 on a Win2K3 box (I know, I know...) so I can't really take advantage of some of the unix commands designed to do specifically what I want. And I don't believe TREE ships with Win2K3 (and even if it did, I can't use it, since it doesn't sort alphabetically).

What are my options here?

Older version of Filezilla, or newer version of something else?

Older versions of Filezilla? Or another freeware ftp client that can handle SSH and SSL? Hard drive got fried in a storm this weekend, and I'm currently reinstalling everything to the new drive. I was running Filezilla version 2 (I think 2.3.2), and it ran like a top. But I just tried installing the latest version in its place, and a couple of SSH connections don't work with it. They're returning "garbled packet" errors.

Googling reveals that they use puTTY for SSH, and that's where the error comes from. Checking with puTTY, they insist it's not an error, it's a server configuration problem, but there's no way I can get these servers reconfigured, and anyway the older software connected and transferred to them just fine. Also, I've tried the connection with two other non-free clients at work, and no problems occur. Argh.

So I've tried to find a download page for older versions of Filezilla client, and am coming up with nothing. Does anybody know where I can find either Filezilla 2, or -- even better -- can you recommend a freeware ftp client for WinXP that can handle both SSH and SSL transfers?

My website's scripts eat up too much bandwidth. How do I resolve this?

My site's cron tasks eat up a lot of bandwidth. Can I change the paths from http to local? Or can I move the tasks to my home server? One of my websites (the election one) runs a truckload of PHP to parse, mesh, filter, and cache an equally large number of external RSS feeds which are then stored and included in a reasonably lean (~10k) index.html. This creates a strange situation where the bandwidth consumed by the PHP (locally, but via http) far exceeds the actual bandwidth consumed by visitors. My web hosting provider has warned me about the excessive activity, but given the limited number of visitors, upgrading to a hosting deal with a higher bandwidth limit isn't really worthwhile for me.

How do I resolve this?

Current situation: a bunch of FeedForAll PHP scripts are executed using a Ruby-as-CGI script (which wackybrit kindly helped me with) called via cron at regular intervals, varying by nature of content: none-time critical content would be updated hourly, whereas latest news etc. is updated every 10 minutes (was 2 minutes, but I took it down a notch for now to avoid further problems with my host). My monthly bandwidth limit is 8 GB; actual visitor usage is a modest fraction of that, but the scripting alone was responsible for 37 GB (!) in March.

Several options:

1) The bandwidth is measured by the host using HTTP responses. If I run the scripts using local UNIX paths, e.g. /usr/gnfti/www/ etc., the scripts generate no HTTP headers and thus don't count towards the quota. Of course they will still incur server load, but I have discussed this with the hosting company and it seems they're okay with it if I limit the use somewhat as a compromise. But then, not all of these scripts seem to be okay with local paths, most notably the keyword filter (rssFilter.php), which is responsible for 25% of the bandwidth on its own.

Any ideas how to make it work this way anyway?

2) I have a home server running WAMP on XP. Could I run the PHP on this box instead and have the output automatically upload to the remote server via FTP? Most of the bandwidth is to do with moving stuff around locally anyway; the actual output is in the order of kilobytes. I imagine this would involve running some sort of cron + FTP client/scheduler on the home box, but my knowledge in this area is limited.

Could this be done, and if so, how?

3) Lastly, if you have any suggestions on how to pull this off aside from the examples above, that too would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or insight you might have to offer, guys.

FTP setup

Trying to setup a very specific FTP service for office group. So, our design department is destroying our Exchange server with their insane 60MB PDFs. We'd like to setup an ftp site so that vendors can upload these docs to a folder within the site, but have no READ access to the site (don't want them downloading other vendor proposals).

I'm going to use FtpDrive on the client side so our design people can use the site like a networked drive.

A few questions:

1) We'd like to have them do this within IE , but have had issues with uploading folders. What is the most simple non-browser free FTP client?

2) We use Maytech, but have a dreamhost account also. We got Maytech because they have the most robust backend. Is there a tool that helps with backend setup so we could use our cheaper, larger Dreamhost setup?

3) We'd like to give each design employee one FTP account that they could give to their vendors. I've had a lot of problems setting up permissions correctly. This is the biggest problem.

Thanks in advance, I know little about FTP as I haven't really used it since the pre-Napster days....

Automagic FTP Upload

Is there a simple program out there that you can drag a file onto that will automagically upload to a pre-configured FTP server and copy the URL to the clipboard? I was previously using OSX 10.5.1 and fell in love with Dockdrop. As it implies (and as I mentioned previously), you configure it with FTP information (server/path/username/pass), and it'll sit on your dock. You drag a file to it, it'll upload and copy the URL to your clipboard right away. Googling has come up with nothing. Bonus points if the program has the capability of uploading to predefined directories based on filetype (ie, .jpg/.gif/.png will /images, .zip/.rar to /downloads).

Running Vista x64 right now. Thinking the Windows equivalent would be something that would sit in your system tray.

How to give others access to a folder on my computer?

What's the easiest way for me to host files for friends to download directly off my computer? I'm running Ubuntu 7.10. The goal: a friend can type in a URL (maybe I'll register with DynDNS since I'm using DSL, and my IP address changes periodically), see a list of folders/files, and download what they want.

Right now we're accomplishing this by me using Gmail to e-mail the file to them. What I'd rather do is have them be able to peruse the contents of a folder, as I'm constantly adding files to the folder(s). Rather than e-mail them all the time, they can log on, see what's there, and download it. They need to be able to do this through a browser, not an FTP client.

I'm not sure what I should even be looking for here. Searches like "file sharing" and "file hosting" aren't getting me anywhere, so I'm turning to the Green.

Remember, I'm running Ubuntu, so unfortunately something like HFS isn't going to work for me, but that looks like what I want to do.

A GUI with simple drag/drop would be perfect.

I'm trying to use smartftp or filezilla to get files on my computer to my website. I use A Small Orange for hosting and I can connect to the servers using the clients, but I'm not sure what I need to do then to get my site up. Please help. When I enter my domain name in my browser it still just puts up the same crappy page I somehow was able put on the site (by some miracle apparently) a few months ago. I can't figure out how to do it again, and its getting unbelievably frustrating. There is a public_html folder on the server that I believe I am supposed to upload my index.html page to, which I have done but nothing happens. I have even deleted the old page that was in that folder on the server, but the page still comes up when I go to the website in my browser. Please help.

Looking for FTP server software with an HTTP interface.

I'm looking for FTP server software that, in addition to standard features like email notification and user management, can serve files to a web page rather than a ratty looking list of filenames in a browser window. If you have any experience with such a beast, I'd appreciate your recommendations. I need FTP capability (upload and download) from my server. I'd like the FTP server to notify me when files are uploaded to, or downloaded from the server. I'd like the server to home-folder the users so that they only see files located in their home folder. All of these are standard features in any reasonable FTP server software app. But...
This is a customer-facing interface for a sound studio. Some clients use FTP client software to connect, but most don't - they're using IE (I know, but FTP is often closed off to firewalls).

So, the IE interface for FTP is awful. I want a nice looking interface with some file management capability for the client - they should be able to control this interface - sort the list, etc - and manage these files through the browser. And it should support HTTP as a transfer method, along with FTP.

This will run on a Windows 2003 server.

If you have any recommendations for this kind of software I'd appreciate any direction you can offer.

Thanks!

Help me find professional FTP hosting!

Can someone recommend a professional FTP host? Storage space is more of a concern than transfer limits. I need to host 100MB-20GB files. The files will be downloaded once or twice at most.

I would need to be able to easily create accounts for my clients and manage my files.

Reliability and ease of use are a must. I've also looked into Megaupload.com's business services, which seem to be what I need for the "Diamond" package, but the price is too high. I need something in the 50-150 dollar range.

I'd hate to have to provide my own hosting locally, as my upload is limited to 150kbps. Any recommendations?

How to turn my Vista machine (I know, I know, OK?) with dynamic IP address into an FTP Server? I want to enable my overseas parents, siblings, in laws and other assorted rellies to upload (due to cluelessness generallly massive and uncompressed) photo and video files of their newborns be they human, animal, vegetable or mineral to my computer.

What easy-to-use software, preferably free- or shareware, can you recommend to turn my Vista machine -- which is always online but with a dynamic IP address -- into an FTP server for static and moving pictures of babies, lambs, kittens (yey!) gardens and home refurbishments?

I'm a pro designer and I don't know why my new pages aren't showing up!

Changes to ComCast-hosted website no longer show up when viewed online, but look fine on my end and when viewing pages on their server. Why? This has never been a problem before, but I've recently made changes to my website and posted them via Dreamweaver's FTP feature. Pages look correct on my (local) site and when I view them as uploaded to ComCast, through Dreamweaver, they also reflect the changes. But try to view them in a browser, and none of the changes show up - images, text or Flash galleries. And yes, they've been checked on other computers and other browsers.

After talking via chat to someone at ComCast (who simply disconnected me when she ran out of things to say - typical) and someone on the phone who was *completely* ineffective and didn't even understand the concept of FTP, I'm not sure what to do. I'm a web professional and this is a new one. Do I need to host my site elsewhere and just start anew? I need to get this resolved because this is my portfolio site.

The site, if it matters, is www.amymalkoff.com.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Help me with a weird FTP bug.

Weird bug with ftp / php5, details inside. Okay. So a friend has this client and she is trying to use Transmit to access her website files. When she attempts to drag photos into the "Gallery" section of the site, it refuses to do so.

Then, some random folders get created that look something like "PORT XX,XXX,XX.. with the X's being numbers. After this happens, she loses priveleges, like deleting and renaming folders.

She's on a brand new MacBook pro running Leopard. My friend can't reproduce it on his MacBook, and I can't on mine. Any ideas?

Take me to Mac network security school.

I noticed this morning in my system logs that I had some failed FTP and SSH login attempts from an IP in China. I thought I was going to have get all Cliff Stoll on this guy, but then looking back further I saw that this has been happening for months, from lots of different IP addresses. I'm many things, but I have never claimed to be a network guy. I know my way around the command line, for the most part, but after the basic network utilities, I'm done. Further, I've been pretty lax with network security, generally having a "wouldn't happen to me" sort of attitude about hackers. That being said, I admittedly have a very insecure setup between the outside world and my computer. My router is set with DMZ to my computer, so I can get to it easily. I have web sharing, remote desktop, ssh, ftp, and afp enabled -- and use all of them regularly. Up until about half an hour ago, I also had my software firewall disabled.

On the other hand, fortunately, my passwords are strong, and the root account isn't enabled.

After seeing the mountain of failed login attempts, I've become a little more paranoid, and would like to be more cautious. A few questions, though:

1. These people trying to break in, do you they just do pings of a range of IP addresses until one responds, and then have a program that just tries a whole lot of logins/passwords at that IP? I see lots of attempts for Administrator, root, and mysql, but there are also attempts for random ones like 'raphael'. What's the deal?

2. I have test users on my system for debug purposes, some of them with admin rights. Is there any way to disallow these users to log in with ftp and ssh? How paranoid should I be?

3. I'd still like to be able to access my computer from the outside world using the same services I have been before, but I'm thinking I should start using my firewall properly, and take off DMZ and enable port forwarding instead, right? Question is, how is this any better at preventing break in attempts? If I can get in here from the outside, they could too, right?

Any other tips, suggested readings, or words of wisdom? School me.

How would I go about posting some files? I want to ask metafilter about the last 16 songs in my itunes library that I can't identify, but I don't know how to go about putting those files up so you all can get to them. What's the easiest way to do this? I'm down to the final 16 files for whom I have neither artist OR album and I'd like to clear this in my lifetime. But that will involve all of YOU playing "Name that Tune" with said files. And that's where we do the question BEFORE the question. How do I put em up so you all can listen to em down?

For our purposes, let's assume I know very little about hosting, and FTPs and web...thingys. What's the simplest way to do this...other than me burning about 1000 cds and passing them out to metafilter members individually?

How do I upload a large amount of data (multiple GB) to my Dreamhost account without tying up my DSL line day and night?
WTF FTP?

WTF FTP Server? I just set up an FTP server on my machine. I opened the ports and set up my network connection to let the FTP server through. I got my home machine talking through the FTP client after some trial and error, and the only way I can connect to it is through my home computer using an FTP client, not actually OUTSIDE the house like I need.

Hmm. What am I doing wrong?

I'm using Filezilla, Filezilla Server Client, and ports 51000 thru 52000. I am using a dyndns.org forwarding address to update my IP.

I cannot get any other computer to connect, not even my wife's machine in the next room. Help? Tips? Tricks? Something I haven't considered? I checked the Filezilla WIKI, I have everything connected as per the instructions and various help pages across the series of tubes.

Help? I wanna FTP!
