Too much, yet never enough: residual anxiety over spending

There was a time in my childhood when my family was poor. Our situation improved as I grew up. But I must've somehow picked up this anxiety about things such as food and clothing. It doesn't exactly interfere with my life, but it can be a waste of mental energy and makes things a bit less enjoyable. Do you have any suggestions for me? [more inside]

Rice and Beans

I'd like to start preparing my meals for the workweek in a batch on Sundays, to be refrigerated and microwaved as needed. I'm looking for a specific rice and bean-based recipe (type(s) of bean, optimal ratio of rice to beans, cooking time) that's cheap and nutritionally complete. That is to say, I'd like to be able to eat this for about half of my meals in a week and remain healthy.

Help, I need to become more frugal. Immediately.

I am a lot poorer since February, due to my ex leaving me (he was splitting the bills with me, so I am down about $500/month from where I was). I have some savings but I've been blowing through it because I haven't been able to get myself to stay on a monthly budget. Help me be frugal! [more inside]

Am I being too cheap and not rewarding myself enough every now and then?

During the past 4 years, I was working part-time (23-30 hours a week) at an optical department in JcPenny. Other than a 10 minute drive from home/school, the pay was not great as to be expected within the retail sector. I was thankfully laid-off in early March and came across another gig that was 40 hours a week with benefits to boot & making $3 more a hour. Now I'm making twice the income in a month's time. Pantry Pile Potluck: What should we make with all of this food?

My boyfriend and I have a cooking puzzle for you: we rather wildly underestimated the price of our groceries when we went shopping this evening, and as a result we decided to try to raid the current contents of our pantry to accommodate two weeks of meals rather than just one. Well, it turns out we have way more stuff than we thought, but we have no idea how to put it all together. Assuming that we can buy $10 or so more groceries if we need to make recipes work, can you tell us how to make the enclosed list of ingredients into 5-7 tasty vegan dinners that are more interesting than just five nights of beans and rice? We know we've got lots of food, we're just not very good at improvising. [more inside]

How can I find the car with the best overall long-term value?

How can I determine which cars represent the best long-term values? I'm open to buying either a new car or a used car but in either case I will likely keep it for at least eight years and 100,000 miles. I want to find a car I like which costs the least over this period of time, taking into consideration factors like purchase price, depreciation, fuel economy, reliability and the costs to insure, maintain and repair. That 70s house.

We just bought a rambler built in 1968. The interior feels like a Mormon chapel from the 70s--pale blue carpet, paneling, hanging globe lights, clean but very dated formica counters, floor length gauzy white curtains on gold rods. Brown internal doors with gold knobs. [more inside]
