Beans and Rice and Beans and Rice

I have set myself a goal of paying off my $10k credit card in the next 6 months. After I cut out all luxuries, entertainment, eating out, new items for myself etc, the main variable is food. I have trimmed the fixed payments where I can and accepted the ones I can't. I need to feed myself, my partner, my 9 year old daughter and my dog. Please help me do this as cheaply as possible! Short term pain, long term gain and all that. [more inside]

Too much, yet never enough: residual anxiety over spending

There was a time in my childhood when my family was poor. Our situation improved as I grew up. But I must've somehow picked up this anxiety about things such as food and clothing. It doesn't exactly interfere with my life, but it can be a waste of mental energy and makes things a bit less enjoyable. Do you have any suggestions for me? [more inside]

How can I save money on food?

How can I save money on food if I live in a place with roommates and an inoperable kitchen? Assuming that nothing in the kitchen works and that I work a full time job, study part time, and my roommates are overgrown slobs who I never see and don't really care about my opinions or thoughts.

Send me away, please.

Teach me how to cook congee.

I've searched previous instances of congee showing up in comments on the Green, but very few actual recipes. None of the recipes I've found online even agree on the rice-to-water ratio or cooking time. Recipes from any nation, savory or sweet and any serving tips or suggestions most welcome!

Switching cell phones from Cincinnati Bell to another carrier

My wife and I got HTC Sensation cell phones from Cincinnati Bell in Nov 2011. The contract will expire shortly, and I'd like to find alternatives that would save us some money. We're generally happy with the hardware, so I see little incentive at this point to get rid of the phones. Does anyone have any experiences, good or bad, that they can share regarding switching from Cincinnati Bell to a prepaid or other budget carrier? We would both need voice and data (though not a huge data plan), and my wife needs SMS messaging (I use Google Voice). Thanks!

Help, I need to become more frugal. Immediately.

I am a lot poorer since February, due to my ex leaving me (he was splitting the bills with me, so I am down about $500/month from where I was). I have some savings but I've been blowing through it because I haven't been able to get myself to stay on a monthly budget. Help me be frugal! [more inside]

Cheap Dates

What are some free and/or cheap date ideas? We like being social, being alone, art, music, outdoors, sexy stuff, weird stuff, books, etc. We're fairly adventurous, but also happy being mellow and watching a movie. We're queer and in the SF Bay Area if you have specific suggestions for us and for around here, but more general ideas welcome. [more inside]

How to use up peanut butter?

I have a bunch of peanut butter that I need to use up, but I'm running out of ideas. I would particularly appreciate recipe ideas that I can use in meals, though all I can ever really think of is perhaps Thai-style chicken/noodles, or PB&J sandwiches, or fruit with peanut butter dip. I know there's also stuff like peanut butter cookies and other baking goodies, but I'm trying to avoid sugar-bombing my diet too badly. Please help me with ideas!

What are some free online services/products for students?

I'm looking for free versions of paid products offered to students (or just in general). Examples of what I'm looking for:
  • Github offers two years free to students upon request of their micro plan.
  • Amazon Prime is free for students for a trial period
  • MSDNAA
I'm primarily interested in SaaS/programming-type offerings but anything useful would be great. I'm open to non-student free things too such as the AWS free tier or electronics components from manufacturers (<3 TI).

Pantry Pile Potluck: What should we make with all of this food?

My boyfriend and I have a cooking puzzle for you: we rather wildly underestimated the price of our groceries when we went shopping this evening, and as a result we decided to try to raid the current contents of our pantry to accommodate two weeks of meals rather than just one. Well, it turns out we have way more stuff than we thought, but we have no idea how to put it all together. Assuming that we can buy $10 or so more groceries if we need to make recipes work, can you tell us how to make the enclosed list of ingredients into 5-7 tasty vegan dinners that are more interesting than just five nights of beans and rice? We know we've got lots of food, we're just not very good at improvising. [more inside]
