I made what I think is a great website for my company using Microsoft FrontPage. However, I have received a few complaints about accessibility and am wondering how to proceed. I know Frontpage is a terrible product in terms of standards compliance, but it got the job done (I thought) and it allowed me to make a 20+ page website quickly and according to my design, making me look like a hero around the office. My boss and coworkers are also pleased with the website and it allows me to frequently update our site as we see fit.

Since our site has gone live we have received a few complaints, specifically that it does not work in Firefox and on handheld browsers and that increasing the font size (for easier reading) "breaks" the website.

We looked to webdesign firms and professionals, but we quoted in the neighborhood of $4,000 (this is for local NYC firms) which is sadly out of our range.

Is there a better program I should be using or are there settings I should use in Frontpage or Expression web? Is there any way for me to "strip" the website of IE specific coding? Is is feasible for someone or something to clean up the website code for a reasonable price?

This was not in my contract!

FrontPage Filter: How do I find the SQL database the dropdown list is pulling from? Difficulty: Fixing a site I didn't design. I've inherited the maintenance of an intranet site for our department and with my somewhat limited knowledge of web design I've hit a wall.

We have a couple of ASP webforms with drop-down lists (the drop-downs are not dynamically populated from the previous selection) that need to be updated. While I see the table name in the HTML, I cannot for the life of me find the the SQL database it's pulling from.

If it helps, the site was designed in Front Page, and is a hodgepodge of hand coding, Front Page generated elements and bits and pieces of code the original designer (who has long since left the company) found online.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Looking for wikis with well-designed front pages

I'm looking to revamp my organization's wiki. Have you seen a Mediawiki installation with a really well-designed front page? Right now, our wiki's front page is just a selection of internal links in a few categories, making for a long, uninviting, single column wall 'o' letters. I'd like to class it up a bit, especially since it's public-facing with a high PageRank — users who landed on one of our deep pages via Google and clicked up to ../Main_Page would thus recognize that they're looking at a big, unified wiki resource.

Obviously, Wikipedia's front page is the gold standard for a Mediawiki homepage (or at least it's the most recognized). Of course, we don't have as much daily activity, so it wouldn't make sense for us to put as much dynamic content on the front page. I guess I'm just looking for examples of well-designed front pages that display a relatively stable introduction to the wiki's relatively stable content.

If it helps, we've got some "current events" pages, a lot of "how to's," an awful lot of entries for individual members of a particular group, and some administrivia like meeting minutes.

Batch replace a file in FrontPage?

Can I change a graphic throughout a FrontPage web site? I updated a graphic that's used as a navigational image map on our company intranet. Unfortunately, this graphic exists in every subweb of the site. Is there any way I can change out the graphic for the updated one (which has the same filename) every place it appears in the site without actually going into each subsite and manually importing the new graphic file? (Please, no comments on this miserable site structure or the use of FrontPage in general. I already know and can't do anything about it until our redesign/CMS project is approved.)

Importing and Altering a Web Site, for Dummies

I want to download an institutional web page and change it a little bit for a job interview. I have Frontpage and NVU. But when I try to capture the page my computer bogs down and stops responding. Help! I have a job interview coming up--yay me! I would be the academic/educator at a technology/humanities institution. Part of my job talk is supposed to include my ideas for public outreach. At that point I want to show them a version of their own website that I have altered a bit with new content areas. They don't have to actually function--I just want to show my interviewers that I have thought of this and how the site might look.

Anyway, yesterday I tried to import the site into Frontpage. It took a damn long time, but eventually I was able to edit the page and make some changes. But everything was slow slow slow, and when I went to save the computer froze up completely. I went home and tried to do the same thing with NVU and had similar results.

I assume that what is happening is that Frontpage is importing way more data from the site than I actually need and that my computer can't handle the huge files. Really, I just want to change the menu bar on the front page of the site and to replace one content field.

Is there a way to import only the first page of the site (if that is the problem)? Is there a clever shortcut that I don't know about? This is not a major part of my job talk and I am not ready to go and learn DreamWeaver or something like that this week. Thanks.

Help me find a website (non CMS/Blog) program/tool for my wife.

My wife and I have a small family farm. While I run a few websites that are hand coded, Wordpress or Joomla based, with galleries and more, she can not handle that. We are trying to find a simple website creation program for her to maintain the farms website.

The one we are testing and it almost what we need is 'Website Baker'. It is a PHP web application that is somewhat WYSIWYG. The big gripe we have is image handling. If we have a large photo from a camera and want to place it on the website, it can not create thumbnails or a browser friendly size. You have to upload the images before you can use them on the page, etc. You can not have images float on the page to the right or left of the page, they have to be within a paragraph break.

We don't need commenting, blogging, ratings, voting or anything like that. We are looking for software that will let her create the website, a professional non crap looking page. I can do the templating, that is not the problem.

The software needs to be able to create a static page for an animal. That page will contain its recent genetics along with a few paragraphs about the animal. Photographs are required on the pages.

If the menu system can support sub pages/categories, that is great.
Example:
Breed 1
Animal 1
Animal 2
Animal 3
Breed 2
Animal 1
Animal 2

Nvu, Frontpage, Dreamweaver, etc. are not an option. Web based apps get bonus points. It will be on a Linux server running Apache web server with MySQL and all of the usual stuff.

Thanks for any, and I mean any, suggestions.

FrontPage Server Extensions 2002, you wrecked my webpage!

Why does recalculating the web using FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 eat chunks of the HTML in the page, that previously worked in FPSE 2000? Please see the ... Before you ask, yes, I know, FP is awful. But, it's what we have right now and there's no ability to move from it on this web site at this time. I need to make this work.

What's happening is that I'm trying to consolidate our IIS servers. Currently, the web site in question is residing on a Windows 2000 Server with IIS 5.0 and FPSE 2000. I am moving it over to a box with Windows Server 2003, IIS 6.0 and FPSE 2002.

When I copy it over, it seems fine. But, when I Recalculate The Web, the HTML that previously read:

< !--mstheme-->< !--msnavigation-->< !--msnavigation-->

< !--mstheme-->

Downloads
External Links
Frequently Asked Questions
Passwords
Lexmark MFP Training
User Info.

< !--mstheme--></></>

< !--msnavigation-->
< !--mstheme-->

Now reads:

< !--mstheme--></></>
</>
< !--msnavigation-->< !--msnavigation-->

< !--mstheme-->

< !--mstheme--></></>

< !--msnavigation-->
< !--mstheme-->

What gives? Is there something I can change on the server side? Does IIS 6.0/FPSE 2002 not like the nobr tag? I'll not lie, I'm not the developer, nor am I an FPSE guru (nor have I personally used FP since 1997 ... and begrudgingly then).</></></></></>
</>
</>

Is there a way to create a web and connect to the server directly with FrontPage 2002 running on Windows Media Center Edition 2005 ? I'm working on a project for a client that has an existing web site built in FrontPage 2002. My primary computer is a Dell Inspiron with XP Media Center 2005. I am able to connect to the web server through FrontPage on another laptop running FrontPage 2002 on Windows XP Pro SP2 (now SP3), but not on the laptop with MCE 2005.

I'm guessing it's a prob w/ the OS but I couldn't find any fixes or references on the MS web site or in the various related Knowledge Base articles.

What is the best and/or most efficient website design software these days?

What is the best and/or most efficient website design software these days? Here at the office we're (finally) ready to dump our old Microsoft Frontpage-based website and move on to something better. The problem is that with so many options out there I'm conflicted on just what software to suggest. I'm looking for advice on just which website editor is worth the time and money these days.

As far as funtionality goes, we want to be able to link our still-in-development project database to the new site so that when users check on project information the latest data is displayed on the site (project budgets, contact person, etc.). Our first idea was to just build a database in Microsoft Access and use Frontpage to bridge everything, but I'd much rather go in a different direction.

Any advice for me? What are the favorite web design software packages these days? How about linking a database to a website?

FrontPage mass-deletes too easily!

FrontPage 2003 deleted my remote files! How can I prevent this in the future/make FrontPage respect the nature of a multi-contributor site? I am the Webmaster at a small university that uses FrontPage to maintain its website because we have essentially a blanket license for MS products (i.e., it's a budget thing). We have several content managers responsible for various areas of the site. I, on the other hand, often make changes and add pages to all sections of our site.

The problem is that if a content manager clicks the "Synchronize" button. Frontpage uploads their files to the server, and deletes any new ones I may have put there! It is syncing the server to the local machine.

This obviously won't work with several people contributing content to the site. Suggestions? Is there a way to disable that darn Synchronize button? The only thing I can think of is to remove delete permissions from the FTP accounts. However, that will still enable people to overwrite newer versions with a local copy they downloaded a million years ago.

Google say there aren't a lot of other people out there with this problem...what am I doing wrong?

Baseline: Working with FrontPage in a multi-contributer environment, how can I ensure FrontPage respects newer, server versions. Most other programs have a "Really overwrite newer version on server?" prompt, but FP just massacres the files with a single click. Help!

How many words on the front page?

I've heard many times that if you read the front page of the newspaper, you would have gone through more words than if you listened to a half hour TV broadcast news show. With this in mind, I am wondering: how many words are there, on average on the front page of a newspaper? What about inside? Does the format (broadsheet vs. tabloid) make a difference? If yes, how many words for each?

Why in Frontpage Do HTML Effects Preview Fine But Then Error Out Later?

Goofy Frontpage question: I use Frontpage to just get a basic visual framework of a site in front of me, then I go in and do my own coding. Yet I'm stupmed as to why, when I use a DHTML effect that previews fine, but upon load is non-existent or gives me an error... any suggestions? Specifically, I'm trying to do a simple mouseover command that underlines, italicizes, or boldens, but in Mozilla or IE, nothing happens and I get an 'error on page' notification. I can post a link to an example if that helps... thanks in advance.

How can I prevent FrontPage from adding random (invalid) code snippets to my valid HTML templates?

I have to use Frontpage to run an intranet - so that others can edit the content. How can I best prevent my valid HTML templates from being mangled? Frontpage seems to add random snippets of code.
