F you "Friend"ster

So, bored at work, instead of stabbing myself in the eye, I decided to Google myself, since I haven't done it in a while. So the usual results came up and with them a Friendster page with my first and last name. When Friendster was making changes to its layout some time ago, it gave its members the choice to display their last name; which I opted out of. Today, when I followed the link to the page, the setting has magicaly changed and my last name was displayed. I immediately changed it back to no display but I am very angry about this.

Questions, why and how did this happen? What can I do to have the result removed from Google search? What can I do to Friendster? I feel that my privacy has been violated. Any suggestions?

DatingFilter: I'd like to send a message to a guy on Friendster, but I can't decide what I'd like to say. I'm fairly freshly out of a relationship I'd been in since college graduation, so I've never really dated in the big scary world. I noticed a fellow on Friendster who seems like an interesting guy--we have similar interests and live in the same corner of the world. (We don't have friends in common; he came up because he's local.) I'd like to send a casual message suggesting that we go get a beer, but I'm wondering (straight MeFites in particular) what kind of message would grab your attention.

Myspace email search

Search myspace.com using my address book? I've been using Friendster.com for a few months and it was really easy to find people who already using it by importing my Outlook contacts. Friendster would tell me who was already a member. Myspace allows you to import some email lists but the only option is to spam everyone to see if they are already a user. Is there a utility or website that searches myspace by multiple email addresses w/o sending them an email? I'd rather not do it one address at a time.

Would you wanna get to know each other and hang out sometime?

What do the friendster spammers want from me? As much as I'd like to believe that beautiful women just happened upon my profile and really want to get to know me better, I'm awfully sure that's not the case. In the last few weeks I've received messages on friendster from "girls" with flattering pictures, prurient hobbies and interests and, of course, a rabid interest in "hangin' out sometime!" It's obvious that this is a scam of some sort, but I'm curious to know to what end? It's seems like a rather labor intensive way to go about spamming for some porn site or something, and there just aren't any clues in the emails as to what these people are up to. Anyone know? Any ideas?

A place to meet folks for iChatting and/or iSighting

So I'm interested in finally using my iChat to meet and hang out with folks online, as well as use my iSight for something more than scanning books. Does anybody know of fun ways to meet folks in iChat? Perhaps a community or two? Does anyone know of any wonderful communities for folks who have Apple’s iChat? A Goggle search turned up lots and lots of matches, but they all seem to be of the spurious “Hi, I’m a lonely blonde supermodel—wanna chat? Log in now!” variety, instead of something with real people (or at least a decent percentage of real people) like Friendster or something.

Anyway, this is all prompted by a) the iSight camera I bought to use with the wonderful Delicious Library book cataloguing program and b) the lovely Dear John email I got earlier this week that has prompted me to become more social now that I’m not in a relationship anymore.

Basically, I’d love to meet some folks to add to my iChat friends list, find some people who are into similar things, and who knows, maybe meet somebody extra-special. We can all dream, and now that we have the internets, we can all chat willy-nilly with random folks.

I used to be a Yahoo chatter and IRC person oh-so-many years ago, but both seem to be rather cluttered with bots and salespeople and idiots, so I thought I’d give iChat a try, since it’s sitting on my hard drive collecting dust. I’m just not sure how to go about meeting other folks who use iChat. Any tips would be most helpful.

Have a wacky day, and enjoy.

Social Networking

Web communities / Friendster knockoffs. I've studiously avoided delving into any of these, but suddenly, by tomorrow, I need to be more knowledgeable than I am about them, especially Tribe.net. I went there to check it out and it's "down for maintenance." I searched here in AskMe, and found passing references but nothing in-depth. Can anyone point me to some overview of these type of sites, which ones are tailored to what kind of connecting, which ones are still around, which not, which suck, which don't, and why?

Friendster

On friendster, why can I click on some of my friends' friends, but not others? If I am a verified friendster-friend of someone, shouldn't I be able to peruse all their friends' profiles, not just a seemingly-random subset?
