Babysitting friend's budgie and let it out to have a fly. It hit a wall and fell to the ground beside my dog who promptly scooped him up but dropped him immediately when I yelled at him. I rushed him to an avian vet. The bird is in shock and in "critical" condition. Oh, please help. Vet expenses are going to be $400 and I don't even know if the bird will make it. But I don't care about the money. I care about my friend and my friendship with her.

When it comes to interpersonal relationships, I’m having a difficult time managing. I only have 3-4 good friends, and I haven’t had a girlfriend since before GW Bush was re-elected in 2004. Lately it even seems like the few friendships I have are suffering. I cant figure out how to move forward from this point in my life.

I have quite a limited social life, partly due to lifelong social anxiety, and would like to try to make more friends locally (I enjoy some online contacts, but friends IRL is my focus at the moment). Since I am not working, and likely won't be in a position to for some time due to a mental health challenge, my funds are limited for going out so I need to be selective. For what it's worth, I live in Glasgow (Scotland), I'm male and age 41. I think I could pursue one of the following three options, but not them all.

When my friends allow men to treat them poorly, I begin to lose respect for them. On an intellectual level, I know that it’s heartless and unkind of me to look down on my friends who are struggling, it’s victim-blaming, and I HATE that I feel this way. How can I stop it?

What is the kindest way to have "the talk" about needing a break from a friendship? Text, phone, IM, email, or face to face? The reason I need this break is because I am in love with him but he's not over his ex, and I've recently realized all this, and discovered it's too painful to keep hearing about her. We've been sleeping together, too, and I thought I would be able to keep it casual but I was wrong.

In friendships, I have a hard time seeing myself as the concrete stuff I can bring to it (helping others, entertaining them). I can't see people appreciating me for my "soft" qualities (kindness, affection, etc.). Although I can appreciate other people for more than what they bring me in concrete ways, I can't put words on the things I like about them. What kinds of qualities are good to see in friends?

In the past, my partner and I have had a casual approach to shared socializing - we have a lot in common intellectually and emotionally, but our work and our hobbies are pretty different. Also, I hate parties and my partner loves them. So we spend time together as a couple a lot, but we see our friends separately and don't usually go to big social events together--although we do go to weddings, holidays, etc as a couple. This has gone on (happily, as far as I knew) for years.
