I’m no photographer, but a friend has asked me to use her Canon A610 camera to take a few photos of some kids, who’ll be wearing pageant costumes, in what she says is a large, high-ceilinged, windowless room lit by bright fluorescent lights. I can’t get to the room early and won’t have time to experiment once I’m there. What setting(s) should I use on this camera? (Assume I’ve considered and rejected the possibility of using a different camera or hiring a photographer.) I’d like to be able to give her decently-lit pictures with natural-looking color.

In high school I was involved in a nerdy extracurricular activity that occupied most of my time, and when I graduated most of my friends went to school A to study our field and I went to School B. One the friends I made through this association has, I've recently been informed, checked himself into a hospital for mental health reasons. He had already decided not to go back to university this semester (we attend different schools, so I found this out second hand). He had had issues in high school, but it sounds as though things have deteriorated dramatically.
He is a brilliant person, and my life has been better for knowing him. I'm going to send an email to a relative of his that I think can get it to him for me. What do I say?

A customer just placed an order at my website. It's looking like this is a friend I went to school with in the early 90's but lost touch over 10 years ago. I would like to reconnect with him. How do I do that without violating his privacy and/or being creepy?

I often find myself having to call my friends to hang out, rather than them calling me. I also seem to often be the last one to write when exchanging e-mails or messages with people I've known in the past. Sometimes they don't even write back a first time. Or they don't write after a couple of exchanges, or several, but it's not uncommon to stop hearing from them altogether.

I'm soon to be 22, and I've never had a relationship... I seem to very consistently turn all my dates and potential girlfriends into girl friends and my therapist, family and friends seem to be running out of ideas. Any suggestions? Of course, complications and some potentially funny stories inside.

Some people seem to hold different expectations of me than they do of others. I used to think it was in my imagination, but lately a few of my friends confirmed that they've noticed it too. How can I make this stop? I need to be allowed to be human. Just because I'm a strong woman, doesn't mean I want to always HAVE to be.

I have a friend who's husband is going in for heart surgery tomorrow. He is a young guy, about 30 years old, He is an extremely athletic outdoorsy type of person, (helicopter skiing, mountain biking, workouts at least 3x a week) He is also one of those guys that don't want any one to visit or call and hates medication, hospitals, doctors. So this is not going to be fun for him, or for his wife. I wanted to know in the hives opinion what I can do to support, say, give during all of this.

Recently I've met my favorite writer in a book presentation. He is considered one of the best living writers. In 2006 he won several prizes. His name is sometimes mentioned as a Nobel candidate. I was lucky enough to cause an impression on him, and I suggested him to visit my blog. He did, and then he sent me a short e-mail about it.
Now, how do I keep things moving forward? How do I develop this contact into a friendship, without turning this into a worship, without causing a wrong impression that I could be using his name to my personal benefit?
Essentially: how do I maintain and develop this relation, instead of killing it?

I am shy and sometimes socially anxious person who has benefitted greatly from social activities run by a small support group where I live (Glasgow, Scotland). I found that site just by sheer good fortune after learning (a couple of years ago) to type the phrase "social anxiety" into Google.
I would like to meet more people and have more of a social life and so have started a local Shyness group on Meetup.com. I would like my group and my site to appeal to those who see themselves as shy rather than socially anxious and to those who know they are shy but have never heard of social anxiety. Where would be good places online and offline to promote our group? Where are the local shy people to be found?
