Should I or should I not ? (date someone while not over someone else)

I am a man. I had an emotional affair with a friend - let’s call him James - whom I was very much in (unrequited) love with, and recently decided to "break up”. The long story is here. Then I decided to start dating and recently met this person, let’s call him Fred, whom I like very much. The problem is that I am absolutely not over James, and we’ve even managed to re-establish contact, still very guarded at this point, although we have not yet met. So I find myself in a quandary and wondering whether it’s fair to start something with Fred when my heart is really with James. I mean, I like Fred very much and could ever grow to love him. But I fear I may be just using them as a convenient toy while waiting for a James moment that will never come. And Fred is a nice enough person that I don’t want to play with him. But then, I also need company and intimacy and I like having him around and he seems to feel the same about me, and is prepared to wait for as long as it takes for me to be truly over James. Handling an irresponsible friend

Things have come to a head with a friend, and I want to figure out if I'm right in wanting to cut and run, or if there is something else I should instead be doing. While the friend has her virtues (she's kind, a social butterfly, fun to hang out with), I've come to the conclusion that she is also very irresponsible, and my experiences dealing with this irresponsibility have become a point of stress and frustration in my life. slow fade isn't working

I have a friend who I consider to be almost family. We used to be extremely close through middle and high school, and probably most of while I was in college. She had a really rough childhood that resulted in PTSD and lasting issues with relationships. Over the past few years our daily lives have become pretty different and I think as she's had less going on she's gotten harder to talk to. I've been trying the slow fade, but she's noticed and I have to figure out how much to explain. [more inside]

When my partner and I wound up living apart for grad school, our girl cat went with him to his new shared house. In the past 2 years, his roommate has become very attached to the cat. However, my partner is moving to my place to share an apartment with me and our male cat - these cats have managed together in the past, but some specific challenges (within)... We are not friends anymore. STOP CALLING! also don't murder me in my sleep.

A former acquaintance (non-close friend) from college continues to contact me regularly despite me ignoring his calls for almost a year. He calls me about once a week and occasionally he will call in bunches. He has probably called 40-50 times in about 9 months. The fact that he has persisted this long is freaking me out a bit. Should I just tell him to stop contacting me or has it gone beyond that? More below. I’m a man btw. [more inside]

How to help a person to see the better side(s) of life?

I have been with my girlfriend for what will be 4 months total as of October 4th. Still feels like the “honeymoon” period. Though, neither of us have had the best lives, so meeting each other was a blessing to say the least. Life changing in a lot of ways. The only issue that seems to ever come up doesn't even directly relate to us or our relationship. It's her one friend of 3 years. [more inside]

Do I have to RSVP?

An ex-friend I ended the frienship with contacted me via email after over a year of no contact. The email was along the lines of, "do you still use this account? I guess sending this means I wish to reconnect." I don't want to resume the friendship with her, but she has serious mental health issues and we have a lot of friends in common so I feel obligated to answer the email... mostly to not seem like an a-hole. Do I have to answer it? If so, what should I say? I'm afraid even a really vague response will encourage her; she has really poor boundaries. [more inside]

How do I give money to a friend who is too proud to accept it?

A friend of mine is coming in from a couple hours away (each way) for the night (halloween party), and money is tight on her end. I would go pick her up myself, but have to work late into the afternoon and wouldn't have time to drive up and back twice between today and tomorrow. I want to give her the money for gas (I am in a much better position financially), since I know this is a big expense for her and she is saving me the trip, but she is very independent and does not want me reimbursing her. How can I get her to accept it without making damaging her ego or seeming like this is out of pity?
