How do you fix a fried laptop?

How badly have I fried my laptop? I went to a friend's house last night to watch a perfectly legally downloaded movie, and planned to hook my laptop up to his TV with an S-Video cable. Well, something wasn't grounded - when I touched the S-Video cable to the jack on his TV, there was a spark and my laptop shut off.

Now it's a brick. No power lights, no response at all.

I'm going to find all of this out on Monday when I take it in to the repair shop, but I'm anxious: how badly have I damaged it? Is this the kind of thing that can be repaired? How much does it cost? And most importantly - is all my data recoverable?

If it matters, it's a 4-year-old Gateway laptop. All educated guesses welcome. Thank you!

How to eat fried eggs.

What are some good alternative ways to eat a fried egg? I have finally mastered the art of the over-easy fried egg. It's (unspeakably) delicious with toast, but I'm worried about getting bored. Aside from on toast, on a roll with cheese (and pork roll here in NJ), on an english muffin, and with bacon, what are some great ways to serve this deceptively simple treat?
Also, read a blog post a couple days about serving it over salad. Can anyone confirm or deny the awesomeness thereof?

We're not new to frying or to bread, but other than the occasional funnel cake, fried bread is rather new. Looking for recipes and wisdom on fried yeast doughnuts particularly. Tips and hints on glazes and sprinkles would also be greatly appreciated.

Fried livers & gizzards in Houston?

Where can one find fried chicken livers & gizzards in west Houston? Growing up, my dad introduced me to fried chicken livers n' gizzards as a perfect redneck finger food/snack food, especially for fishing trips. Buy some raw to use as bait, and another box of em cooked to eat while you fish!

I was able to buy them in high school (southwest Oklahoma) from the deli section of the local grocery store, right next to the egg rolls and stuffed jalapenos, but I've been unable so far to find any in Houston! I've tried Kroger, Fiesta, etc, and have come up empty.

So, where in west Houston (within 5-10 miles of BW8/Westheimer) can I go to buy fried livers and gizzards? Or am I out of luck, and just live in too urban an area?

Lightening fried USB and Sound card

Lightening fried the USB and Soundcard on my laptop, is there any kind of cheap fix or workaround? I'm no expert on hardware, but heard that USB and sound card on a laptop is actually part of the motherboard. In a quick scan on the net I came across general info that it is possible to deal with this by some sort of hardware hacks (for the USB at least).

It is a perfectly good and quite new computer with a DVD burner and all so I would like to salvage it somehow if at all possible, or at least have some sort of workaround hack. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

What should I fry? Give me your favorite fried food ideas. I'm throwing a "fry party" at my house this weekend, and am looking for ideas of what to fry. We're using small household deep fryers, so no turkeys or sides of beef. We're making the obvious items: cheese curds, mushrooms. onion rings, coconut shrimp. I'm looking for your ideas and favorite fried food items and recipies. We're going to try funnel cakes and snickers bars, but I'm anxious to hear some other ideas as well.

Scanner Kills Computer

My scanner fried my motherboard, was this to be expected? Can it be prevented? Do I assume the scanner is dead too? I have a Canon ColorPage scanner, which is USB1, and has it's own power supply. On the weekend I started up my computer to scan some photos and realised that the scanner wasn't plugged in, so after windows had booted I went to plug the scanner in, upon the USB plug contacts touching the socket (or may have even been the case) the whole computer turned off.

Now it wont turn on. I tested PSU and MB separately and have concluded that the motherboard has been fried (and probably the RAM and CPU as well). They were all out of warranty, so I've resigned to ordering new parts (I'm currently praying that the HDDs are fine!)

Now, will my new computer be at the same potential fate? And what might have caused this? The scanner was plugged into a different wall socket than the computer PSU was, and had been plugged in for several days, previously upon plugging in the scanner the whole computer would suddenly reboot,. This occured once or twice before but I had always assumed it was a driver conflict, or a 'feature' that came free with Windows.

I'm using a Thermaltake Armor case, if that's of any relevance, and it was the front side USB socket.

If the scanner is to blame in this case, then would putting a USB hub between the computer and scanner mitigate the damage? Or should I write the scanner off as a deathtrap?

I was berated by my IT consultant father for not plugging it in before turning the computer on, and that, apparently that's the cause. But I have doubts about this... doesn't sound like normal behaviour...

Deep Fried. . . What?

What Should I Bring to the Deep Frying Party? My friend who owns a used restaurant equipment business has a party every year. He fires up three or four industrial sized deep fryers and guests are invited to fry the delicacy of their choice. People usually bring bags of frozen stuff and it's all good (can anything fried be bad, really?) but this year I want to bring something really. . . unique. Unique, yet edible. Disgusting, yet delicious. Peculiar, yet palatable. So I turn naturally to the hive mind. What should I fry this year? Bonus points for things that are fairly easy & quick to prepare - this party is in about 7 hours.

How can I give up the fried food and still be me?

I have chosen as one of my New Year's Resolutions to cut out fried food in an effort to reduce my fat and cholesterol intake. Yeah, that's great and all, but the question is, how do I supplant that need? I'm going to have some severe heroin-like withdrawal problems. I crave the texture and the flavor of fried foods. The way the crispy crust is swept around my mouth, scrapes across the roof and is pulverized in my molars. Licking the salt off of the inside of my cheeks.

I live in the capitol of Fried Food, USA. I love fried chicken (Popeye's AND Chicken Box AND Cane's). I love fried seafood. I love chicken fried steak, french fries, latkes, boudin balls, hush puppies, tempura, egg rolls, wings -- I would batter and deep fry pizza if I could (and serve with a scoop of garlic butter, mmmm). But, that is not exactly helping my health.

We've got issues with high cholesterol in my family. I need to not eat the fried foods. I need to fill that hole in my diet/psyche with something healthier that I will find satisfying but won't overindulge myself with ... if that makes any sense. I am open to any suggestions that may come up. Recipes, links, support groups, antidotes, anything.

Please, AskMe, help me put down the fried mozzarella sticks.

What kind of dressing should I use on my turkey?

TurkeyFilter: Last night I tested this year's turkey recipe, and it was a failure. I usually make a maple syrup/butter/broth reduction and use that and cheesecloth to make a wonderful bird - 4 years running. This year, though, I have to make a kosher bird as the meal will be held at a kosher family member's residence. The olive oil-based recipe I tried left the skin dry and soggy at the same time - not an easy feat - and the bird was OK but not special. We've deep-fried before to great results, and I assume peanut oil is kosher; should I adjust for another type of non-butter fat (would margarine work? olive oil certainly didn't) or just bite the bullet and deep-fry?
