When I’m dealing with a lot of emotional stress, my two main coping mechanisms are cooking and gorging myself on all the food I can get my hands on. I’d like to find a way to indulge the former and not the latter. [more inside]
I hate grocery shopping so I like to buy a lot of food at one go. I went all doomsday prepper this week and may have overdone it this time on the perishable stuff. I need your help in using these things before they go bad: Gala apples, onions (white, red, yellow), carrots, red potatoes. Stuff I can freeze for later is the best. [more inside]
We have leftover roast beef and roast vegetables. I would like to make a stew with this but we have no plans to eat it right away in the next week or so. Should I make the stew and then freeze it and then thaw the stew? Or should I freeze the ingredients and thaw them when we are ready to make and eat the stew?
Please give me your tips and tricks for insuring any fresh foods you are freezing (meat, bread, etc) remain in the best condition and taste the best when thawed. [more inside]
Our bumper crop of veggies is coming on and our neighbor's chickens are producing eggs at an amazing rate. I don't have time right now to complete assembly on raviolis, but could make large batches of frozen pasta and filling. What is the best way to store the pasta? [more inside]
The way modern medical therapies are going, it seems that decades from now it would be advantageous to have a source of your more youthful cells or tissue stored long ago and available if needed. So I should investigate storing some now, but know little about this. How do I find out which kind(s) of tissue would be the best choice to store, and how do I select a cryo-storage service with an excellent medical reputation for harvesting, storing and successfully delivering tissue in a medically-useful state? Since the first Nintendo game console came out in the 80's, I can recall everyone I know (myself included) blowing into the game cartridge and/or the Nintendo itself when something went wrong (freezing, etc.). What is the premise for doing this (I saw other people do it, and sometimes it seemed to work, so that's why I did, thinking maybe dustiness/debris was the issue...), and is there any legit evidence that this really fixes things?
My wife and I really like cooking elaborate multi-course meals for guests. We are advanced home cooks, and greatly enjoy being in the kitchen. However, our kitchen is not lavish, and of course time is limited. What are your go-to recipes that can be prepared in advance (ideally, the weekend before and frozen) and then finished or reheated for a really excellent dinner party? Examples inside. [more inside]
I'd like to ship glass containers carrying liquids to a friend in a Northern state (opening them up and placing them in another container is not an option, as they are carbonated.) It is currently winter and frequently well below freezing outside. Is this possible to do without the contents freezing solid and exploding? FedEx recommends placing thawed gel coolants in a package to prevent freezing as a "heat sink". How does this even work?

Hi! Quick question. My dear mother gave me more marinated chicken fillets than I can possibly eat at once. They've been marinating for a day, have not been frozen yet. Can I freeze some of them?
Salmon was on sale at the store, so I bought 3 lbs, cut it up into approx 0.5lb pieces, and froze each piece in a ziploc bag for later use. A week later, the same thing happened with cod. And then, at some point (days - 1 week), my freezer began to smell of fish. Then my fridge too. And finally my kitchen. Where did I go wrong? [more inside]
Sometimes (often?) my external hard drive seems to stall while spinning up. But it's not broken. So what is it doing, and is there a way to fix it? [more inside]
So after years of using roommates' machines, and having finished a well-paying highly stressful recent job, I rewarded myself by buying an XBox Slim off of eBay. Which I guess was foolish of me. The thing arrived with only the 4GB hard drive, so I had to buy a decent-sized one in order for it to do anything, and even then it started freezing nearly constantly. If left off overnight it will start up and work for maybe an hour before freezing at first, and then quickly degrade to the point where it can't even start up properly. [more inside]
I make a big batch of green juice each weekend and freeze it to enjoy throughout the week. The taste is fine, but I miss the velvety texture of fresh juice. Mine freezes into layers and, when defrosted, is more "water with a lot of pulp" than juice. [more inside]
One of my favorite no-brainer meals is grilled chicken marinated in fat-free Italian dressing. Yum! I usually marinate and grill a whole pack of breasts and then grill them and save leftovers through the week. But I got to thinking about how I could get the freezer to help me out. Can it? BakingFilter: I'm trying to clean out the fridge and use up some things - and one thing I want to do is make up a whole bunch of turnovers using jam and puff pastry, and then freeze them. This Christmas, I'm giving everyone the gift of delicious and healthy home-cooked meals, but I'm blanking on how to wrap and/or present them at the Christmas Eve festivities. Everything will be pre-frozen, which probably rules out putting them by the tree with the other gifts, and the only other solution I can think of is leaving them in my car and letting everyone take theirs on the way home, which is lame. There must be a better way. [more inside]
