Help me become a better, more confident driver

Until very recently, I lived in a college town where having a car was completely unnecessary. Though I had my license, I rarely drove. I am now in a place where having a car isn't absolutely necessary, but more convenient. At my parents' behest, I also now have a car, which I'm very grateful for. However, there's such a mental block for me to drive said car that I haven't driven anywhere for over a week. Any suggestions to overcome this general avoidance of driving? [more inside]

Who named Ghost Ditch? And when?

This past weekend I drove from Los Angeles to Tucson via Interstate-10, and took to noticing the names of the various ditches and washes that are spanned by the highway out in the middle of the high lonesome desert. There are a lot of them. Ghost Ditch, Taro Ditch, Larry Ditch, Stubby Wash, Fornat Wash, Itta Wash, Edom, Mccoy, Rollie, Bula, Sutro, Calotus, Esso, Arco, Teed, Turala, maybe a hundred between the ditches and the washes. The names don't seem to refer to nearby municipalities (there aren't any) or other geographical features, and are clearly part of the National Bridge Inventory. How were these 'waterways' named? Who named them? Were they named before the freeway required infrastructure to pass over them, or during the construction process, or when the NBI was implemented, or after the fact altogether? I want to know the history of the city without a history

Please recommend some books about the history of Southern California. I'm specifically interested in the evolution of car culture and the L.A. area as a cultural incubator. [more inside]

F**k the Truck

Every weekday my commute is either easy -- because there are almost no big trucks on the road -- or terrible -- because the freeway is packed with a solid line of big trucks. Why is it like that? What do I not understand about shipping, trucking and/or logistics that makes this such an either/or proposition? [more inside]

how do normal people enter the freeway?

Can anyone please explain to me how to enter the highway without mentally writing my last will and testament? It terrifies me and I feel I endanger other people, too. [more inside]

Is my uncle out of line, or am I?

OK. Here's my issue. I can drive, but I've inherited a bit of a driving phobia from my mom (who doesn't drive at all). In the small town where I'm originally from, I just stuck to regular roads and state highways. I've never liked the freeway. [more inside]

A Freeway Runs Through It

I'm looking for examples of cool, walkable mixed-use urban areas that existed before or grew up around freeway interchanges, and that still work despite being so close to major highways. [more inside]

(the) road ends here

Suppose that I was giving someone directions to my house that involved telling someone to take an highway or freeway. Would I be correct in telling that person to "take the 10" or "drive four miles on the 60"? I've been mercilessly mocked for inserting the "the" into those directions, but I can't find anything conclusive about the proper way to refer to it. [more inside]

How do strangers play via their vehicles, on the freeway?

I was driving down the (somewhat busy, but not congested) freeway in a sports car, and a motorcyclist wanted to... play? Another sports car took took up the offer. What is this? What are these games and how are they played? What sort of things do people do to eek out some (quasi-legal?) fun in traffic? (I don't plan on participating, but I'm curious about the interaction) [more inside]

Where can I find more community cycling events that happen in interesting locales?

I'm looking for annual community bike rides around the world, particularly where there's a big participation or closing of regular streets. As an example, I've done Chicago's Bike the Drive and just found out about Perth's Freeway Bike Hike. Are you aware of anything else that's similar? [more inside]

Can I be an audio voyeur?

In the movie The Conversation, Gene Hackman has a sonic surveillance device (a directional microphone?) which, when pointed at distant people, enabled him to tune in to their conversation. This made me think how interesting it could be to own such a device and use it to tune in to conversations other people are having in their car as you pass them on the freeway. Is this possible?

Can anyone recommend a sound reduction device?

Background Noise Reduction Device

I live about one hundred yards from a major freeway and although the house (and my bedroom) is nicely insulated downstairs, during morning rush hour (and particularly when it rains) upstairs where the home office is located the constant din from the cars passing can be quite annoying. Has anyone every used any of the myriad sound reduction devices available out there? I am not looking for a sleep aid, rather something that works much like those hearing aids that reduce background noise, but is actually for an entire room.
