Before building my own... does this software exist? I need to search a collection of PDF & Word files for key phrases, and dump the surrounding lines (x-m to x+n characters/lines, where x is the found phrase) into text files.
I occasionally need to search a few dozen files for a few dozen data items, which usually have some identifying text nearby. This needs to be automated.
Big bonus if it implements OCR, but that's not essential. Freeware, or cheapware, obviously is best. Windows-based is preferable, but I can do Linux.

I have a client who has a Windows 2000 server and a LAN consisting of a whopping 3 other computers.
He would like a program that lets him know when employees have logged onto the network...preferably by email notification. He doesn't care for anything as machine-centric or intrusive as Spectorsoft, but would like a small utility that does it's small job well for a small cost.
All suggestions are appreciated.

Is there a freeware windows application that will allow me to print the directory structure of a drive or section of a drive on my network? I have a drive at work that needs to be reorganized and it would help me if I could see directories and sub directories listed in order and in print.

I used to have this great Windows freeware that allowed you to pause and throttle copying and moving commands, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. Any ideas? [more inside]

I have several thousand html files that I need to edit, basically removing a block of text from each. Does anyone know a Windows app (preferably free) that will mass-edit a folder of files?

Laptop Clean XP Install:
1] My (on board?) sound card is unrecognised. How do I find out what drivers to use?
2] What programs do you really think I need? I already have VNC, VLC, Firefox, Thunderbird and AVG installed. What else should I add? (Freeware/OS appriciated but not needed.) [more inside]

Hard disk management. I have several hard drives, running from 20GB to 120GB. My primary C: drive is on the 20GB drive, and the other day I noticed it was taking quite a while to do things, the C: drive was down to about 20MB of disk space! What I'm looking for is a disk manager that would look at hard drive and tell me what folders are taking up what space on the hard drive, so I could prune the offending directories. I'm on Windows 2000, and would prefer freeware.

My laptop has taken to switching itself off at random intervals, but only at my parents or in-laws houses. The general consensus is that these houses are hotter than my own and it may be just enough to upset my system.
Can anyone recommend a good freeware (pref OpenSource) program to check up on the internal temperatures of the system? I'm running WinXP.

I'm looking for a RSS Aggregator to use on WinXP. I'd prefer one that has its own front-end instead of using a browser. Basically something that works like a Newsreader or e-mail program. Free would be good. Any recommendations? Thanks. [more inside]
