Client requires that I register as a business

I am a freelancer drafting a contract with a potential client (French university) for a yearlong remote consulting job. When I wrote my own name and my personal bank account info on the contract, the admin from the financial/accounting office told me: "We can’t directly pay on your personal bank account. We have to sign a contract with a company." I'm looking for a simple way to resolve this problem. [more inside]

Has anyone done freelance graphic design for American Eagle Outfitters?

Hey everyone! I've got a tough decision in front of me... I am lucky enough to be in a position where I have to choose between two job offers. One of these companies is American Eagle Outfitters and I would be working as a graphic designer in the corporate office in Pittsburgh. The other job is at yet another big PGH company, but for a slightly different position. I know people that work or have worked for the second company, so I've got the scoop on that option... However, I don't have any "inside info" on working for AE. Essentially, my position at AE is being called a "freelance" job, but I'd be working in the office 5 days a week with varying hours (and I'd be a W2 employee). That is a bit confusing to me, as (through personal experience) the words "freelance" and "W2" usually don't go hand-in-hand. ;) Anyway, sorry... rambling! Has anyone here "freelanced" for AE Corporate in the past and can give me some info on how it went/what it was like/etc.? I've got a big decision to make by end of day Monday!

Portfolio website for a freelance writer -- what to use?

As a freelance writer/editor, I want to set up a website for several years of clips and a short bio. I want something that is going to be around for a while, so I'm leaning toward Wordpress or Squarespace (can write off cost as a business expense) rather than a more specialized site. I found some previous questions about this but they were from 2006/2010. Good examples of individual freelancers' sites are welcome too.

Freelancing for Dollars

I want to know what the market is for freelance reporters to sell their ability to do stories to radio stations across the country (or maybe in general). I don't know what a reporter might charge for freelancing the reporting, producing, writing and voicing of a story or what would compel a station to hire them And does there exist a collective or consortium of freelancers who have managed to turn that into a business model, like a narrowly focused employment agency or maybe even a talent agency. Does anybody know where I can find data on both?

Expert networkers: Help me routinize my networking

I've been freelancing in my profession for about a year. I've always been a huge believer in networking and I'd consider myself an above-average networker. But lately I've been struggling with making the time to keep my network fresh. I get busy with project details and other aspects of being my own manager, and I don't send the emails I need to send, or follow-up promptly enough (for my tastes anyway) with fresh contacts. Looking for tips and tricks to make space for networking in my day. [more inside]

Getting out of a toxic situation and finding the right path

I rushed into a new job after a layoff a few weeks ago, and it's really not a good fit. The commute is too long (and I have no interest in moving here, because I love where I live and the job is in a really dismal part of the county), the work is too boring (it's IT work that's largely automated, and my "job" appears to be to watch things and make sure they don't go down) and it's starting to make me ill. I'm very close to a breakdown and I am not sure what to do to improve my quality of life. [more inside]

Earning while I'm Learning?

I have been asked by a friend who's just starting a technical consulting business to help him do marketing/CRM. I am helping him as a friend with tech strategy and competitive intelligence (what I do know) and he wants to pay me to do business development (which I don't know.) So, what should I charge for consulting services when I am completely new at what I am doing? Sounds foolhardy, I know, but lots of snowflakey details inside. [more inside]

Negotiating the right to moonlight

I’ve just been offered a product design position at a local software company, and tomorrow I’ll be negotiating the terms of my employment. I’d very much like to have the option of taking on small freelance jobs and remunerative personal projects outside of work, but the default employee agreement states that all intellectual property I produce belongs to my employer, including that developed outside of normal working hours. Is there any way I can take this job and keep my freedom? [more inside]

Be my freelancing cheerleader. I'm broke and paralyzed by anxiety.

I was laid off from my video production job about a year and a half ago. I wasn't too sad to see it go because I really wanted to freelance. I wasn't getting paid enough in that job to have savings, but I had unemployment for a few months, and figured that could see me through bulking up my portfolio and getting some clients. I did find some regular work and have built up good relationships that I hope turn into more, but in the mean time, I am so broke. I volunteer with several organizations and go to events, so I keep telling myself that if I just hold on a little longer, it'll get better. But when I sit down to work on marketing or personal projects that show off what I can do, I freeze up with anxiety. [more inside]

New to freelance writing and need help with taxes.

I am new to the world of freelance writing. I have a regular full time job but have started freelancing on the side a couple months ago. Right now, I make about $400 a month from various jobs. Still a small number but I'm expecting to ramp this up a bit so I'd like to learn more about taxes and how/when I will need to start paying. When should I start reporting my taxes? I assume I will need to pay quarterly, how will I go about this? What forms? I'll consider hiring a tax advisor if I start making more from writing but for now, I'm just trying to get my feet wet and understand my tax obligations. Thanks!
